STC Episode 6 (news and speculation)....

Wasn't that a matte painting in TOS? BLASPHEMY!! DIEE!!!!
Nope. That was a physical set. STC is recreating it, just as NV/P2 is doing. If it were a matte painting, all those times Scotty had to hang onto the grill because of turbulence they would have had to do the positive and negative mattes so he didn't look transparent. It cost much, much less to do the forced perspective.

All cool developments. Pictures of engine room seem even more recent than Vic's video.

Star Fleet spackle. Some things never change. The universal cover-upper.

anyhow

So I'm minding my own business watching Mirror, Mirror, and checkin' out that upper chamber that Scott and McCoy use to shunt warp power to the transporter. Yeah, I know ISS enterprise is actually Pike's ship nacelle spikes, oversized dish, etc.

I wonder if we'll see that again in a fan production? Cool view from up there.

We are working on the elevated Emergency Manual Monitor set.
Cool Greg. Can't wait to see the view from up there.

My tech manuals, blueprints, etc are downstairs in a box of shame (my wife lets me peek only on a leap year) so if I once knew the name, I've long since lost it to time.

Emergency Manual Monitor. Huh.

Better than my snarky Whovian name for it- I'd called it the power shunt loft.

Oh, and of course this is the wrong thread, but, since you're peekin' in here- just letting you know that I'm totally looking forward to seeing Natira again.

The Remastered team was charged with reworking some or all of the Space Shots and Matte paintings, right?

Given that at the start they were pressed for time, and looking at their early work on the BigE- What would they have done to the engines?

Orange stars? Yellow moons? Green clovers?

Thank your lucky charms the engine room was a complete practical set.

Now all they need is an incredible shrinking digital Scotty to walk down the Engine Chamber for repairs. Have a good echo for effect. Make it more than a neat light show.

Of course we have it as well.

Of course we have it at STC as well.

^Is that section already built on the opposite side? In the construction vids we've seen the set from one side.

That's why I asked - didn't see the engine room from that "loft" perspective in any vids or pics of the new builds. Perhaps it was shown, and I just missed it.

Anyhow- good on both productions. Scenes can be made fresh just by either shooting from, or having a scene in, that cool space.

Something Vic said in the video reminded me of something I'd forgotten. We have already seen a small part of Main Engineering in Ep. 4, "The White Iris." We saw the entrance to Main Engineering sans the main console where Scotty often sat. It's where Chekov was working on trying to override the new planetary defense systems programming (or whatever he was doing).

In the video Vic also mentions that Main Engineering will be seen prominantly in forthcoming Eps. 6 and 7.

You're right, I'm thinking of the Warp Core from TMP, there's a fp matte painting on the floor.

I generally figure whatever one of STC and NV/PII have set wise, the other either has or will have soon.

OK, since Feek61 peeks in here, I just noticed (via his cool TOS graphics website) that he knows quite a bit about the on-set specs/dimensions of TOS' Auxiliary control.

Unless I missed it, that's one set I haven't seen in either production.

Since we're in a wishlist mode, I think it'd be great to see that as well- ol' time vintage Pike/WNMHGB-era viewscreen and all.

At least part of Auxiliary Control was seen in STC's Ep. 3 "Fairest Of Them All." It's from there Mirror Spock stages his takeover of the ship and overrides the main bridge.

Yep! Sure was. Thanks Warped.

I like that ep, so I'm surprised that I'd forgotten about Auxiliary Control, given its importance to the plot. Amazing what one forgets after a year.

Just took a peek (gotta love You Tube) the room looks pretty fleshed out. (like 2/3rds visible?)

The ACR we have on STC is the complete set . . . well, as much as was ever shown on TOS.

Forgive the pendantry, but what you're referring to isn't a matte painting, but rather just a painting. A matte painting is used as part of an optical effect, where the painting is on glass with voids in it for live action to be composited in during post production. You're describing a painted backdrop that's right there on the set. :)

nitpicker

Anyone care to guess when Ep. 6 might show up?

I suspect it won't be by the end of this year, although I'd like to be wrong. I think we might have heard rumblings to that effect by now.

So I'm guessing sometime in February, 2016 or maybe March.

In fact didn't STC premiere an episode in February before?
