James Bond franchise--the return of SPECTRE and Blofeld?

I'd like to see Daniel Craig do one more. I think his publicized sour mood was due to media PR and interview fatigue.

Nah, he's a self important actor who thinks it's beneath him, despite it having made his career. There's a big part of him that wants the chance to do more important 'work'.

I'll forgive him that as he's probably the best Bond we've had. On a par with Connery at least.

Speaking of Connery -

About twenty years ago, I really wanted one more Connery film. Basically, a Dark Knight Returns sort of film -- Bond has retired, he's out of the game, and he gets drawn back in for one more mission. Something really brutal and uncompromising. Think Unforgiven, but James Bond instead of a western.

I'd settle for a new version of the existing NSNA (as I think its it's owned by Eon now) - take the opening credit scenes and put them before a proper title sequencein a traditional Bond manner, re score it to include the classic Bond themes and tweak the edit to make it clear Spectre are getting desperate and trying the same trick again...

EON does own it now, and I have wondered over the past ten years why they haven't done that very thing. I might not go as far as editing it to make the story "fit," but why they haven't redone the credits and score -- and sell it as part of the other 23 movies -- has puzzled me. I really thought they should have done that as part of the Legacy Collection (or whatever it was called) back in 2006/7.

They might own it now but it's still not a true Bond film. It wasn't made by the same people and didn't star the then current Bond.

Daniel Craig: "Maybe I'll Make Another" James Bond Film

Daniel Craig also confirmed he wrecked "three or four" Aston Martins while filming 'Spectre.'

Daniel Craig sat down with Matt Lauer on The Today Show on Thursday and spoke about how Spectre celebrates what James Bond is all about.

Craig and Lauer chatted about Christoph Waltz as the new Bond villain and how each film continues to push the envelope. Craig also confirmed he wrecked three or four Aston Martins that were made especially for the film.

Toward the end of the interview, Lauer brought up Craig's comments that he would rather slash his wrists than film another Bond film. He asked Craig to put the quotes into context.

Craig responded that Sam [Mendes] is much more eloquent than him and said, "If you're 200 yards from the end of the marathon and someone comes up to you and asks are you going to run another marathon, there's two words you use."

The actor and Lauer joke that those words are not appropriate for a morning show.

"I've had massive amounts of fun making this film," said Craig, adding that he's probably had more fun on Spectre than on all his previous Bond movies put together. "The simple answer is I don't want to think about it."

He reiterates that he's had a "wonderful, wonderful time" making the movies. "Maybe I'll make another one, I don't know," he said.

Stephen Colbert and Daniel Craig Spoof James Bond Car Rental Troubles

"Well, he does drink a lot of martinis."

Stephen Colbert addressed a concern of his about the James Bond franchise on Wednesday night's show with guest Daniel Craig.

The Late Show host told the 007 actor and star of the upcoming Spectre, he couldn't believe that in almost every Bond film, beautiful cars with cool gadgets get destroyed not long after the secret agent gets them.

"Well, he does drink a lot of martinis," Craig joked.

From there, the pair acted out a scene in a fake car rental shop where Colbert played a snooty employee and Craig was Bond, desperately seeking a car while being chased by assassins.

Turns out, 007's rental history isn't so good.

"On my. Oh sir. Uh-uh," the Colbert character says while looking at Bond's file.

I was, wondering how people would rank the following films:
Dr. No (DN)
From Russia with Love (FRwL)
Goldfinger (GF)
Thunderball (TB)
You Only Live Twice (YOLT)
On Her Majesty's Secret Service (OHMSS)
The Spy Who Loved Me (TSWLM)
For Your Eyes Only (FYEO)

My rankings are as follows:
DN - 8
FRwL - 9
GF - 7
TB - 9.5
YOLT - 8
OHMSS - 9.5
TSWLM - 9
FYEO - 10

Any reason for that particular list?

Two of those films probably sit in my worst Bonds ever list. Thunderball. Seriously aside from the Vulcan stuff and Fiona Volpe I don't see what's so great about it? so-so villain, meh Bond girl. When I was a kid the underwater battle seemed cool but in hindsight it's terribly dull, the battles in YOLO, TSWLM and Moonraker are so much better. Plus his seduction of the girl at the health spa is creepy as hell

The other one is FYE, although it has gone up in my estimation having been to Corfu and actually visited several of the areas filmed :)

As for your list

Dr No: A very solid 7
FRWL: 8.5, people go on about the gritty realistic Connery era but really this is the only one he did...
GF: So hard to accurately grade this now because I've seen it so many times. It is iconic, but iconic doesn't always mean great. I'll go 7.5
TB: 5 To quote Silva in Skyfall "So dull, so dull..."
YOLT 8 Connery maybe dialling it but this gets bonus points for a hollowed out volcano, an army of ninjas, spaceships and Donald Pleasance as the best Blofeld.
OHMSS 10 nuff said
TSWLM 9
FYEO 6

Those are the films I've seen so far as part of what is, essentially, a first-time viewing of the franchise pre-Craig.

I wanted to watch the movies in a way that represented the "best of Bond" in terms of continuity of storyline, evolution and development of character, and progression of narrative, and the list I ended up with was put together with help from some Bond fans who were much more knowledgeable about the franchise than I was at the time.

You Only Live Twice is far from the worst film in the series, but it's also boring as shit. I'd easily place that at the bottom of your list. My order (of the films you listed):

From Russia With Love
Goldfinger
Thunderball
On Her Majesty's Secret Service
Dr. No
For Your Eyes Only
The Spy Who Loved Me

Without spoiling the details of the new movie, can anyone say if the Quantum organization is referred to at all, or did it just quietly disappear without a trace?

I thought that was kind of left hanging with QoS, so it almost felt like Skyfall was a separate continuity from CR and QoS.

Not referred to at all that I recall. The only link to CR and QofS is 5 mins of Mr White, and some very forced, limp attempts to make it look like Le Chiffe, Silva, and presumably Vesper Lynd were all working for SPECTRE.

Yes it is.

How would everybody rank A View to a Kill? I'm giving it an 8.5, putting it as my third-favorite film so far. I really liked Roger Moore's performance in it, and thought the villains - especially Zorin - were great. I also really liked the film's 3 principal Bond Girls Stacey Sutton, May Day, and Jenny Flex.

As an aside, I love that Allison Doody is the only actress in history who can call herself both a Bond Girl AND an Indy Girl.

I don't like AVTAK at all. Moore looks utterly ridiculous, verging on the creepy. The always reliable Walken is wasted (the first actor to be a Bond villain and a Batman villain, if we're going with coincidences) and the great Patrick Macnee only seems to be onscreen so that Roger doesn't look quite so old compared to everyone else.

The scenes at the Eiffel Tower and Golden Gate Bridge aren't bad, IIRC.

AVTAK will always be the Bond film that Roger Moore shouldn't have done because he was clearly too old, but I don't think it's a bad film in its own right. It's far better than Diamonds Are Forever which Connery certainly shouldn't have done based on his age.

I always find the scene in AVTAK where Grace Jones sacrifices herself to be pretty dark for a Bond film of that era.
