Trek Returning to TV in 2017!

So all you JJ haters out there can relax. The new series apparently won't be related to the current movie franchise.

Given the divided rights for ST and the fact that CBS apparently didn't even want to play ball with JJ in regards to even merchandising, I would not be surprised. Someone up there at CBS is very crafty: let the movies take all the risks and anger the core fanbase while CBS can swoop in like a white knight.

Again I will state that they only said the series won't be related to the Star Trek Beyond movie specifically. That doesn't mean it won't be set in the Abramsverse.

Translation: "While the movies will feature Kirk, Spock, McCoy, etc. on the starship Enterprise, the new show will feature X, X, and X, etc. on the starship X."

is CBS even allowed to create a show in the abramsverse? That company doesn't seem like they'd be willing to give points to Paramount just to set it in the abramsverse.

Well, what is the Abramsverse, legally speaking? Do they have to pay Paramount for a cameo by Simon Pegg as Scotty (or any Star Trek character not invented for the recent movies)?

I can see a series using some design elements indicative of the Abramsverse, and maybe even some characters reimagined from the original timeline (plus, of course, Klingons and Romulans and Vulcans and cetera). It doesn't have to talk about the Hobus supernova or how Nero did that one thing and Admiral Marcus did that other and watch out for Idris Elba and all that.

Paramount doesn't have to get a dime if CBS is careful with its references yet still wants to keep it in the "Abramsverse." The destruction of Vulcan might be a hassle to get around. But then again, Vulcans were barely ever mentioned in TNG and DS9 (outside of select episodes).

I'm starting to feel all nostalgic. I first signed up to the BBS when Enterprise was in development and we were all speculating what it was going to be about. Now here we are 15 years later doing it all over again!

All the ships will have engineering sections that are based on breweries. ;)

The USS Yorktown? Sam Adams

The USS Andrew Jackson? LandShark

The USS Berlin? - well you get the picture.

I am excited by this news! But I will probably wait until it hits Blu-ray which means I will be a season behind. I find Streaming services very frustrating to watch. Take me 2 hours to watch an hour show with all the buffering.

Would you believe me if I told you that I don't own a smartphone, .......

That makes two of us.

And until recently I just had an old tube TV set, no flatscreen. Not to mention iPads.....

Come to think of it.... why writing ebooks without being an ebook reader yourself? I don't read ebooks either, so I'll miss your latest ebook. And I'm happy about the latest German print edition of some S.C.E. stories, which used to be ebook only....

I'll take a pot luck with the new series. ;)

Some day we'll all look back at this and laugh. ;)

The "not related" disclaimer is so nebulous that it doesn't really say anything, except perhaps that the new show won't specifically be a spin off of events occurring/introduced in Beyond.

Okay, I really don't have time to hash this out one more time, but the new movies did NOT universally "anger the core fanbase."

At best, some small percentage of fandom had issues with the reboot, but I really wish people would stop asserting, as though it was a self-evident truth, that all of "the fanbase" is united in its opposition to the new movies.

Nobody speaks for all of fandom. Indeed, if there's one thing this board proves everyday, it's that we Trekkies are an opinionated and argumentative bunch who seldom agree on anything. :)

No kidding. I've been a trekkie for as long as I can remember and I wasn't angered by the new films. I liked them!

(Yikes, this thread is moving too fast for me! This was obviously for you, Greg Cox!"

Would you believe me if I told you that I don't own a smartphone, have never texted in my life, that my TV set is at least 16 years old and still attached to a VCR player, that I've never read an ebook, or downloaded a movie from the internet?
Holy cow patty, there are two of us.

And I had to be practically forced at gunpoint to switch from WordPerfect to Word . . . .

(My various editors pretty much rose up in revolt at one point. One of them claimed that I was pretty much the last professional writer she knew who was still using WordPerfect!)

I just read today that George R. R. Martin uses WordStar 4.0 on a DOS computer to do his work. I still have WordStar to use on files I have in that format.

I used to write with a typewriter. Mistyping twice was an ugly thing....;)
