Star Wars Battlefront

Yeah, it seems really bizarre to take a property with mass-market appeal like Star Wars and then turn it into a minmaxing hardcore nightmare for the 720 NoScope kek Reaperz demographic.

Just gonna leave this here...

It was a nice trailer, but I'll keep a hat on my excitement until I see proper gameplay.

This would be wise, as DICE's last few games have been ... sub-optimal.

And the Battlefront beta is effectively what I expected: Battlefield: Star Wars with a few cute minigames.

For me, one of the criteria for deciding whether I will purchase a game is who is behind its creation. When I saw that this game was from EA, I was like, "How bad can this get?" I do not have faith in EA.

As for games glitching, that seems the norm nowadays. It is not a strike against purchasing the game. I mean, I have preordered Fallout 4 and I am pretty damn sure that, as this is a Bethesda game, it will be a clusterf**k.

I'm a little confused on what is actually there for single / offline play.

I googled it and found an article saying the only thing is "Missions" mode and there are bots in that. But that you can't play the normal game with just bots? Someone on Facebook told me there is a "Horde" mode with bots where you just get attacked by ever increasing waves of bots but I couldn't find that anywhere online.

As someone who never plays online against humans, and generally is a bad player, the notion that I can only play against humans online (who are much better than me) basically makes this game a non-starter for me... :(

Correct, only the four Mission game types are playable solo.

Also correct.

There is indeed such a mode. It's called Survival, and it's one of the four Missions game types. The other three are:

Training
Star Wars Battlefront Training Missions will let you fly an X-wing over the canyons of Tatooine, chase down Rebels with your speeder bike, or even fight as Darth Vader. Training Missions will help you become the best pilot in the galaxy and a formidable player on the ground in Star Wars Battlefront.

Battles
Master your Star Wars Battlefront prowess with Battle Missions. Fight alongside the Rebel Alliance or the Empire, against a friend or against enemy AI in head-to-head action. Battle Missions will put your skills to the test – do you have what it takes?

Hero Battles
Star Wars Battlefront Hero Battles let you live out your Star Wars battle fantasies by letting you play as Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, and more. Feel the power as you master moves like Saber Rush or Force Choke as some of the most iconic characters in the galaxy.

As someone who never plays online against humans, and generally is a bad player, the notion that I can only play against humans online (who are much better than me) basically makes this game a non-starter for me... :(

Well, there are the Missions, though that alone certainly isn't worth the full price of the game. I say wait a couple of years, or however long it takes to be able to get a copy for $20-25, and get it then (if you want to ever get it at all).

It is sad that they decided to pretty much eschew single player, save for "Missions" mode. I would've loved to see a campaign similar to Battlefront II. Would definitely have loved to see a rebuilt version of the battle on the Tantive IV. :)

This game has been described and advertised primarily as a multiplayer experience from day one.
Yup.

Also, I'm kinda glad they didn't decide they needed to build a generic-as-fuck linear corridor shooter experience, BF3 style (aping CoD's spectacle FPS, scripted, follow-the-marker structure) to "complete" their package.

Leaving out an "actual" SP campaign is preferable to that alternative.

Even though I don't particularly care for EA, I do have to say, my favorite EA/DICE games are Battlefield Bad Company and Bad Company 2. Excellent SP experience. :)

It is a shame that this turned out to be such a shallow experience, even for a modern MP shooter. The art and audio assets are very authentic and it's probably the best looking Star Wars game I've ever seen. A well designed SP campaign with these art assets and some decent AI would be fantastic.

I'm further confused now because the "Battle" and "Hero Battle" modes sound like I could play the whole game against bots...?

I use the SP modes in such games to familiarize myself with the way the controls work and gameplay features. Once I get the hang of it, I go straight into MP, never looking back.

Someone here called it Battlefield: Star Wars, which isn't the vibe I'm getting. I'd say it's more Medal of Honour: Star Wars, which I have to say I'm not thrilled about.

The Beta just convinced me further not to get this game. I'll wait and see if the other maps and modes look interesting post-release and then once the expansions start coming out I'll add it back to my purchase radar.

Yeah, but let's face it, they were great because of their set of characters ;)

Oh, yes, the characters sold the game, but I thought the SP action was pretty decent too. I thought it was better than BF3 and 4. :)

Yeah...maybe it was the characters in BC and BC2. :D

Let's just say that off all the Battlefield games I've played, the BC series is the one I always go back to...if anything, for a good laugh. :)

The first two Battlefront games were pretty dope. If version 3 is optimized for playing on PS4 with a couple of buddies it should be right in line with its predecessors. Never been into online multiplayer though.

The beta graphics look pretty amazing, I have to say. Even if Hoth looks... improbably mountainous?
