TOS Sound Effects

Based on that site, I'm guessing the ambient bridge sounds were originally sonar beeps.

Well, the line is "electronic music with sonar beeps." It was no doubt a blend of various sources including electronic tone generators and assorted real-world sounds.

Hmm... it claims the Martian War Machine/phaser beam sound was "tape feedback of an electric guitar and a harp," but I think it's mixing that up with the Martian heat ray sound, which is an electric guitar played backward. I've seen it claimed that the war machine hover/phaser sound is a recording of a swarm of locusts played at an altered speed. (Although it was usually sped up and pitched higher as the phaser sound.)

I take exception to most of what is said on that page. First, Doug Grindstaff had said in a interview that most of the sounds came from library sources, very few were actually created for Star Trek.

Secondly, that site states that Ben Burtt had worked on the original Star Trek series, when he would have been about 16 years old? According to IMDB, his first credit was in 1975.

I always thought photon sounds were made by striking the microphone with a spring.

Here's one: The Disruptor sound effect. Everything between the Eminian, Klingon handheld, shipboard weapons, the occasional forcefield touch, and the Planetkiller's Antiproton beam. It's one of my favorite sounds in TOS. How was that made?

It always had an evil sound to it.

Recently popped the TOS sound effects CD ... .
That first six-minute track of the bridge sequence ... really has a "you are there" feel.
Only thing missing is the background voices and hails.
