On season 4 of Buffy...should I be watching Angel?

Oh, the whole no-breathing/no circulation thing comes and goes. Spike smokes - how? They can get drunk - how? How can they have sex without blood circulating. How can they even speak without breath?

Meh. Handwave it, and enjoy.

With the breath thing, I've always taken it more as that breathing is a voluntary act rather than a survival need, that they don't need oxygen but can still work their lungs. After all, if they can operate their other muscles to walk around, they should be able to operate their diaphragms as well. Although I'm not sure the shows presented that consistently -- I do seem to recall references to vampires having "no breath" even though they were clearly talking.

Another one that always bugged me: How come screen vampires are always so nicely coiffed and groomed when they can't see themselves in mirrors?

Yeah, Angel had no breath in the season 1 finale when Xander had to do the CPR on Buffy. Or, perhaps, he was just pretending so that Xander would step up.

Oh, yeah, that was the one. It just made so little sense for a character to say "I have no breath." If you don't have breath, how are you able to say you don't have breath?

Aren't there episodes that seem to imply vampires hair doesn't grow too? Such as when Angel is rescued from the oceans floor after 3 months he looks exactly the same (no long hair or beard), I'm sure there are others too. But of course there a tonne of examples of vamp characters changing hairstyles etc, esp Angel's longer hair at the start of Season 5, and Spike's unkept look at the start of Buffy Season 7.

Just one of those things really.

They do kind of address that in the Angel Season 5 episode Harm's Way. I just watched the beginning on Netflix and they specifically show her getting out of the shower and looking at the mirror without her reflection, and then brushing her teeth and doing her hair. I guess they just kind of guess what they look like....

Honestly, his hair probably would have started falling out from being so malnourished.

Haha, and now in the episode with the flashback to when Angel became a vampire, in the scene where he rises from the grave you can see their breath in the air.

Even if you can say, that one episode where he couldn't give CPR was a fluke that they changed later. Shouldn't their breath then be rather cold, and not be visible?

I'm caught up to Buffy in Angel. I think I'm liking Buffy better than Angel at this point but I liked seasons 2 and 3 better than 4. Maybe because Angel hasn't established a robust cast yet, and Buffy shed three main characters and hasn't effectively replaced them yet. I do like Riley but I think the whole Initiative thing was kind of botched. It was a cool idea but when they made the professor into a moron Frankenstein instead of well intentioned but misguided they kind of blew it. The way she died seemed like a completely different kind of character than they spent the rest of the season establishing.

It seems like they're gradually making Spike into a protagonist but I don't know how he will ever really be one unless he gets gypsy cursed and this transitionary stage is kind of annoying.

Why was Doyle killed off so early? Did he not focus group well or did the actor want to leave?

As for the Initiative - it was a nice try, but it sort cast a bright light on the writing staff's total lack of knowledge of "the military", and they obviously didn't bother to get a consultant.

Buffy Season 4 is easily my least favorite season. While it had some individually awesome episodes, on the whole it was just kinda lame. I appreciate it more in hindsight, but at the time I was very disappointed.

Don't get me wrong, I like Wesley, but having only one out of three castmembers being at all combat capable is unbalanced.

When I think of Buffy Season 4 the Initiative is just what comes to mind first (like Glory does for s5 or the Mayor and Faith for s3) and the problem for me is just they looked so lame. ie them all wearing cargo pants and green sweaters, and holding plastic looking toy guns.

They didn't really look very badass at all.
