Name 3 countries you'd consider inviting to join the United States.

Re: Name 3 countries you'd consider inviting to join the United States

Never met one (in person), so I can't be sure if they don't smell funny.

All that Maple Syrup building to a critical mass must effect their scent inhumanly.

Re: Name 3 countries you'd consider inviting to join the United States

Just affecting the stereotypic (and sometimes well-earned) myopic American with absolutely no world view. No offense meant.

None taken. My comments were just meant as light teasing about what I originally assumed was just a typo. (Although I really was curious about the "funny shows"! ;))

My first experience with Canada and Canadians was one of wonderful connection and support. Orchestra exchange with families from our town and from London, Ontario.
No way! My hometown! :D

Total! We stayed in the gracious homes of your orchestra students, and our parents hosted your students in our homes in the States. It was my first foray into another culture, and it was very nice. I got a hockey stick signed by the friends I made there, and that was the first of many trips and visits I have come to appreciate. But, I do think "Canadia" sounds a bit cooler. IMHO.

"The shows" I was referring to were those "Yah, hey there!" shows Mike Myers (?) used to do. Truth to tell, they were never that funny to me, but some of his other stuff is hilarious.

I do want to get back to London, and if I do, I will be contacting you for a possible meet and share! :techman:

Re: Name 3 countries you'd consider inviting to join the United States

I found season 2 of Rent-a-Goalie on Youtube. Good stuff. Also a very young Stephen Amel in a diaper.

Re: Name 3 countries you'd consider inviting to join the United States

I suspect I speak for many Brits, Canadians and Australians and say Thanks but no Thanks.
Yeah, I was gonna say...

Realistically, we'd probably want a country that brought more to the table besides manufacturing Fosters.
Ha! Most Fosters is made in the UK, the place that drinks most of the stuff...
In the UK, Fosters is produced by Heineken at the Royal Brewery in Manchester

Say something like a functioning Government. ;)

Still less dysfunctional than the US.

Let's see... when is the last time I had real maple syrup, as opposed to the artificial kind?

Years ago. It's horribly expensive stuff here.

Can we not do this, please? I'm pretty sure this informal TrekBBS survey is not internationally binding or anything, so the only result of you getting in your little digs is just possibly discouraging others from giving their answers lest they get a snarky response.

Re: Name 3 countries you'd consider inviting to join the United States

Ford passed legislation in 1976, committing you to total metrification.

What's the opposite of adapt?

Someone should've told the schools that. It would a pain to have to teach myself to practice the metric system. I'm so used to MPH for example, and feet.

In this context, I believe the opposite of adapt would be the term "laughing stock".

I've never heard any American complain about soft drinks being sold in two liter bottles, or fail to understand how much it means.

Australia: 5 Prime Ministers in 5 years.

So that would be a no.

Australians LOVE cooking on the Barbie, so do we!!!
We both got beaches and cool buildings
We both speak English, and Americans are crazy for imitating Australian English...and we are good at it! "G'Day Mate!" See!
You spoeak American, not English. And sorry, all I'm hearing is "Good'ay, moite".

I usually just break down crying in front of the soda aisle hopelessly trying to decide which one of the 900 identically sized bottles labelled 2-liters that I want. Then the clerk comes over and says "Dude, it also has the fluid ounces printed right on the front." Salvation! Because I always check the fluid ounces first, I don't just know what a 2-liter looks like.

Then I ask the clerk where the bathroom is so I can dry my tears, and he tells me the loo is 40 meters to my left on Aisle Zed in the blue coloured section, and I start sobbing again as I begin pushing my cart down the wrong side of the aisle; a broken man, tormented by the metric system.

I have a 2L bottle of Dr Pepper handy... *checks*...

One side is in English and the other is in French. But both sides are completely metric. No ounces allowed.

Thanks for that.

While I understand that the vast majority of countries value their independence, why take it as an insult that I think they are great countries? Never in my post, did I mention any of those country will be better off joining USA.

But given the premise of the thread, you must expect people from those countries to voice their reactions. Unless you have decreed this a US-only thread?

Realistically, we'd probably want a country that brought more to the table besides manufacturing Fosters.

But unlike the US we don't have the Republicans periodically threatening to wreck the country by refusing to pass bills to continue funding of govt services and admin. Even Abbott never tried that (although Fraser did, and that's how they got rid of Whitlam). And while Labor didn't pass Abbott's first budget they also didn't threaten to block supply. So if you ignore the soap opera, Australia is not doing too badly.

Re: Name 3 countries you'd consider inviting to join the United States

Depends on what you mean by "join".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trade_bloc

In terms of sovereignty, a country loses the least to a preferential trade area; a free trade arrangement , the next least.

Countries I would invite: Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland.

Re: Name 3 countries you'd consider inviting to join the United States

HEY! Not such a greedy guts.

I said "three".

Re: Name 3 countries you'd consider inviting to join the United States

Well in terms of a trading block there is the TTIP which is being discussed. And sure reducing trade barriers can improve the participating nations economies. But as with anything the devil is in the details.

I understand that the European Union has a free trade agreement with Mexico. Something similar has been suggested for Britain if the country withdraws from the EU.

BTW, during the last few years more and more observers have commented online that the EU is beginning to resemble the Holy Roman Empire.
