Star Trek: Renegades

I couldn't really say it is a good movie. But there's clearly so much heart and commitment behind it, and enough good ideas in the mix even if they don't quite come off as intended, that it's a good *bad* movie and fun to watch in the right frame of mind.

Which does not live up to what they promised/pitched/hyped however you want to put it. I've repeatedly expressed my admiration for any producer or production group who can see a project through to release, but when you make promises and build an expectation that it will be at a certain level, I think you're just setting yourself up for a critical barrage if you don't live up to it.

As has always been said before, "No one sets out to make a bad movie." It's always with the hopes that whatever movie you choose to make is well received by your intended audience (and then some).

Sometimes, despite all the heart and soul one might pour into it, it still falls flat. One person's great story might be another's yawn-fest.

But, again, I am also of the notion that it is good to have ambition, but in the Murphy's Law of Movie Making (similar to Murphy's Law of Warfare):

"If you say you have an epic movie on your hands, make sure your audience agrees."

(BTW, not sure if there actually is a Murphy's Law of Movie Making. If there isn't, I just kickstarted it. )

Thought so. And flicking through that review some more, there are a lot of little errors like that. Or weird statements. It reads like he let himself get a little bit carried away. I hope his screenwriting is better than his review writing.

I agree. It can be difficult to measure one's reaction when responding to something they don't like, and I think this fellow raises several legitimate grievances with Renegades but those points are overshadowed by his own poor writing skills and tendency to tangent off into nerd rage.

At some point I will watch Renegades again and try to compose my own thoughts more succinctly on it but for now there's just too much else going on in my life at the moment.

As far as I can tell, you have been clear and consistent with that stance and I have no problem with it. I think the issue of raised expectations comes when producers are asking for money. Based on my feelings after viewing OGAM I did not donate, but I can see how someone who felt they being promised "Game of Thrones" and ended with something they could compare more to "Plan 9 From Outer Space" might feel misled.

I hope no one will think I am comparing Renegades to that Ed Wood bomb. I was just using it as an extreme example.

Reading your comments left me dreading watching Renegades, which I finally did do this weekend. I didn't want to watch it twice, after reading all your comments. And my best fan-film-hating Trekkie in-person friend wanted to tell me how terrible it was as we watched it together, so I held off until he could watch it with me. He liked it. We both did. It was fun.

I'm glad to hear that I am not the only one that liked Manu's performance. One issue I have with the script is that the best actors in this (Manu, Tim Russ, Walter Koenig) didn't have more to do. Just my two cents.

I didn't recognize the Terminator 2 actor, so I'll likely re-watch at some point. Something I rarely do with independent Trek.

Here is a glimples of the new admiral uniform (yes it needs to be tailored just a bit)

That's certainly an improvement, and much more pleasing to the eye. Well, mine at least. I also think, while you say it still requires tailoring, it's already much better fitted than the previous costumes.

I would suggest losing the braid from the cuffs, and I'm not a fan of the shoulder strap, which feels (to me) like an unnecessary throwback to the TWOK costumes. I'm sure others will feel differently of course.

I would suggest the braid around the grey yoke needs to be integrated into the braid down the front (or just removed entirely). The TNG era shows generally aimed for a clean look to the costumes, and while I don't think this is bad, I do think it's a little too busy as is. I think, if you remove some of the clutter, you'd have a winner.

But as I said, I'm sure others will feel differently.

From my perspective, you nailed it, USS Intrepid.

I am with USS Intrepid on this one, too. Much better than the first version. I think an Admirals Uniform is supposed to shine a little brighter than a regular crew members, so a lot of the golden bling-bling goes in order.
I actually do like the shoulder strap, but I am wondering about the collar. It seems there is an underpart, that already has a collar, and the jacket has another one. I think the grey collar could be moved to the shirt, and the jacket could remain without it. Kinda like the TWOK movie uniforms. This would also allow for a more clean run of the golden braid on the edges.
And the grey section at the end of the sleeves are visually to long. I think it would be better to have a narrow stripe of grey with the ranksymbol on, leaving some red going down to the open end on the wrist.

It would be interessting, if all uniforms would be Grey/red, and only the shoulder strap is in the color of the department... Just a thought...
