Season 1: Not as bad as I remember?

I loved early TNG, there was a scope to it. (Well, some of it) I know it doesn't seem that way upon viewing today, but it was big shit back in the '80's. At least it was for me and mine. Early TNG feels like a different era when viewed next to later seasons. Almost classic. Not only did props, wardrobe and sets change but acting, lighting, film and camera techniques did as well producing something of better(?) quality. I say that while not really feeling it. I love seasons one and two. And the violence! (Remmick's head) Another 80's artifact. They are clearly of their time, it's almost as if they wanted to ape TOS and have TNG be very much of the '80's, from hairstyles to set dressings. Once in a while you'll see a wall with horizontal lines, that's straight out of the '80's. You could go to your local Holiday Inn and see the same stuff. Loved it. You'll notice that wall disappeared in season three.

It's something of a time-capsule if you're into that sort of thing. And I love the Dustbuster so much more than the ugly, angular cobrahead.

I'll echo the sentiment of some here and agree that there are a few S1 episodes that aren't bad at all. I enjoy The Battle, Datalore, The Big Goodbye, 11001001, Heart & Glory and Conspiracy.

I re-watched Lonely Among Us on the weekend and was laughing throughout at how bad it was. The scene where Picard "electrocutes" the bridge has some of the worst acting in the history of Star Trek.

This is one of the handful of eps that just makes me want to throw things at the screen, as does "Who Watches the Watchers" .

 What's wrong with "Who watches the watchers"?

Picard's self-righteous, ranting, over-the-top religion bashing.

Ah, I see. That's cool.

My personal opinion only differs in that I actually liked all that stuff. I love it when Peecaad gets self-righteous.

Ah yes. Worf's "Captain, I'll help you if you let meeee!" is especially cringe-inducing.

Troi and Yar's lines in that scene aren't helpful either, but in Dorn's defense (slightly) he also arguably got the worst line out of the three.

I really like season 1 (and 2 for the same reasons). The stories were 'different' and often brash, the cinematography and lighting were good, and the music was great. Say what you want about (most of) the episodes, but they weren't boring. Each episode had energy. There was definitely a "new frontier" feel to it, maybe because no one really knew what they were doing, and they were still trying to find their footing.

Yes, a good third of the season had either crappy or retreaded plots, but it was still more entertaining than season 7. The storytelling later on in the show just got too rigid and restrained.

The problem I always find with S1 is the way in which Gene's vision attempts to manifest itself. It's hard describe, but the criticisms of 20th century society seem...I don't know...forced isn't the right word, but I don't really know what is.

It is easy to criticize Roddenberry for this and it often comes off as being cold. But I imagine most of us would be quite critical of the values and attitudes of 18th century humans if a few showed up in the present day.

It was one of the few times the TNG gang came off as truly human.

It isn't so much the points they raise--more the way in which they are delivered feels awkward. Again, it's hard for me to describe it.

Would "hitting us over the head with a sledgehammer" come close to describing that feeling...?

Ah, another TNG Season 1 thread.

These seem to turn up as much as 'Who is Your Favorite Captain' thread?

I'll recycle my answer:

I prefer the first season despite the cheesy moments, due to some of the acting and writing. It had some interesting ideas like men wearing a 'male' version of the skirt....and it had our female officers wear their skirts and boots (as well as the jumpsuit uniforms)...and it introduced the Ligionians, which were an awesome race of people that should have been expanded on in later seasons. Maybe Reginald Hudlin or Shonda Rhimes can produce a Trek show someday...and we'll get a John Ridley (or Steven Barnes)script expanding said race.

Not too mention, it hinted (slightly hinted) that LaForge and Yar might have something going on. And, speaking of LaForge, it was cool seeing him in charge during 'Arsenal of Freedom.'

Other thoughts:

Picard - Always seemed like he had a stick up his you-know-what

Beverly - Always seemed like she....well...(even though she was hot).

Riker - Always seemed....well...

Data - Was a bit cheesy, but retained some interesting attributes since this was still 1st season.

Wesley - *sigh* Cheesy, annoying....(I think making Wesley a girl named 'Leslie' would have been interesting, as was originally intended).

LaForge - Had so much potential. I think his character actually became worse over the course of the show.

Worf - A big, dump brute. A micro-brain....with a macro-head.

Yar - Another character with so much potential. She was supposed to be a badass, but they - producers, writers - didn't know what to do with her. If she was created today, she might have been treated a bit better.

Troi - Pretty much an exotic member of the crew that was unneeded.

Season One was so bad it was good-almost.

But the difference between TNG season One and VOY/DS9 Season One was, you rooted for TNG to succeed because "Star Trek" was finally back on TV again and you wanted it to succeed !

With VOY/DS9- it was like, "OK, show me!". We were way more critical, because TNG was a success.

TNG Season One has quirky charm, but it's equally terrible.
