New uniform

Maybe it's just another dress uniform.

IIRC, many real militaries have multiple grades of dress uniforms depending on the formality of the occasion. Starfleet could be doing something similar.

That's what I suggested on a previous page. Spock and Scotty could be at some diplomatic function that goes south or whatever.

Meanwhile, the regular shipboard duty uniforms from the last two movies could still in service on the Enterprise.

The holster looks like something Matt Dillon or Barney Fife would wear, too.

Thigh holsters?

How dare Star Trek try to be... Wagon Train to the Stars.

Nailed it, to the wall.:techman:;)

Please, tell us how you really feel.

I will never understand the propensity of expending effort to announce how much one unequivocally dislikes something in a place where most people likely enjoy that something. I could, for instance, find a forum with fans of Harlequin Romance novels and "shit all over" those books, but why would I? It won't change any fan's mind, it won't contribute to any meaningful discussion of literature and, most importantly, it would require I read such books. Better to just skip them (since I'm convinced I would hate the experience) and ignore the fans of such books. With the time and effort saved, I could do something pleasant.

Ditto.

Considering Scotty is standing around what appears to be a crashed ship I doubt it.

Besides they don't really look that formal.

Not sure about that. As noted, real world militaries have different grades of dress uniforms, depending on the occasion. The US Navy, for example, has three classes of dress, depending on the formality of the situation.

Spock and Scotty could be at a function when their ship is attacked and crashes, resulting in them being rescued by Kirk and Chekov and Kirk's new friend.

Also, if there was a crash, then their uniforms might have had decorations removed, for whatever reason. Or, it is the undershirt for the full dress uniform and the jackets are removed.

We are all being SO speculative about and obsessed with a simple blue shirt and a red shirt. "Star Trek" fans, thy word is, "pedantic." ;) :p :D

No real reason to doubt it since we don't know the story yet. Kirk and Spock were wearing formal uniforms when Starfleet HQ was attacked, so anything's possible.

Some could say that about the TOS formal uniforms.

Definitely plausible. When trouble happens, it could happen at any time, regardless of what else might be going on.

Off the top of my head, my younger sister had 7 types of uniforms.

-2 ceremonial (whites fo summer, black jacket for winter)
- Mess uniform (for dinner time)
- her fatigues for when she's on duty on the boat
- Evening dress
- Day dress
- Training dress.

Oh, and some of can also have a sword. Big shock that TV tends to simplify it - the people budgeting costumes would blow a gasket. But there's room for some hand waving there if 'need' be.

I guess the new pictures look kind of like Picards formal dress-kilt thing, but not so long and with pants.

One of the things I love about the Abrams films is that there are a variety of uniforms in Starfleet.

I like how the color-coded shirts are used aboard ship mostly and not ashore. Reminds me very much of the working uniforms employed by the Navy.

Looking at that pic of Quinto again, I'm wondering if the raised collar is actually an inner hem that has popped up while he is adjusting his costume, trying to cool down. That could explain the difference from Scotty's uniform.

Yeah, Kirk totally tapped that.

Judging by hand positioning, I think it is the other way around.

I'm curious about that thing on the back of her belt (white with circular aperture). It stands out from the costume, so might it be plot related? Maybe a fancy scanner...

count me as one of the people who don't like the new duty uniforms (Quinto instagram picture) it looks too stiff, like a jacket and cheaper, and uninspired. Maybe I'm too picky but then even my mother, who is a seamstress, also said the other uniforms were way better made.
Beyond favoritism (a new director wanting to hire people from his other movies), I don't understand the need to replace a costume designer who simply did such a great job in the first two movies. Kaplan kept the feel of the tos uniforms and honored our memories of them, but at the same time he reinvented them appropriately, made them look more realistic and plausible. The details on the pants and the fabric of the shirts (the tiny starfleet logos in the fabric anyone?) were great. The starfleet academy cadet and instructor uniforms were so good (Spock's perfect tailored dark grey jacket is still my favorite) and I loved the dress uniform from stid.

imagine Spock doing this scene with the new jacket and pants (I didn't see the new boots. Please tell me they are not heeled like the tos ones ..)

I'll say, though, that I like the other uniform (the one Kirk is wearing in the pictures with the alien) better than the 'mission' jumpsuit from stid. Though, like others mentioned, that uniform is weirdly reminiscent of Guardian of the Galaxy.

I was thinking that the environment on the alien planet might be visually quite busy, so they decided on a plainer uniform for contrast (and to give our eyes a rest). Of course, since there is a separate landing party uniform anyway, my explanation doesn't really work...
