Bliss

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
So much wrongness in this one. First of all it is stated that Naomi is not affected because the "illusion" that is sending them to sleep is the promise of returning to Earth (and she doesn't share that desire). Hmm, ok so then why are Chell, Tuvok and other non-humans affected? Why would they want to go to Earth?

"Well, they were all seeing their own fantasy which wasn't necessarily returning to Earth" I hear you cry but if that's true then Naomi should have seen... I don't know, Flotter and friends. Seven (also not affected) should have seen perfection (or some variation on that fantasy).

Her Borg implants protected her (I hear you say) but if that's true then why did she see the fantasy of escaping the pitcher plant at the end of the episode?

Additionally, when the rest of the crew see the Earth fantasy, they become catatonic but when Seven sees the fantasy of escaping the pitcher plant, she remains conscious.

Silly nonsense, right?

Wrong!

The pitcher plant showed them all what they wanted to see and then devoured them. The voyager crew are dead! They're dead! Everything that happened after Bliss was merely the manifestation of the crews combined fantasies (Neelix conveniently finding Talaxians that far out, Chakotay and Seven's relationship, baby Miral, destroying the Borg, Harry getting to captain a ship (Nightingale), holographic rights, reaching Earth).

Nothing more than than the dying thoughts of a crew being consumed by a giant space alien type thingy.

Even "Fury"?:rommie:

Even Spirit Folk, Human Error, The Disease, Renaissance Man, and Endgame? (among others) :rommie:

Fury is one of the fantasies Neelix is having. The idea that Kes could live without him is unacceptable so he fantasised that after she left, it all went to shit for her.

I'm sure I could make a convincing argument for any of the post "Bliss" episodes.

;)

I love the episode and don't consider the problems serious. Maybe you're taking the words "fantasy" and "earth" too literally.

As for Tuvok: well, Vulcans only control their emotions if I'm not wrong and maybe "earth fantasy" means "getting rid of Neelix".

Of course Spock would have simply put his hands on his temples and concentrated for ten seconds and see through the illusion but there was only one Spock.

In general I think that some later VOY episodes (like this one and "conspiracy"too) had some tongue in the cheek in the first place.

No, you are wrong. ;) The Talaxian's thing is the lie but only that. They returned home and Neelix became embarassador and then President of the Federation.

Actually, I like this explanation for Fury more than the idea that it "really happened" ;)

(The part of the crew dying because of the pitcher plant excluded, of course)

You do realize, that all the other crew's homes other than Neelix are rather close to Earth?

Point the first. No, not really.

Point the second. Even if they were, that would suggest the pitcher plant is simply giving them a shared delusion of "reaching home" which in turn would suggest that the pitcher plant can only create one delusion per ship (otherwise why not just let them all see what they want and avoid any possibility of some crew staying conscious?).

I mean, what if some passing ship that isn't desperate to get home comes by? What one shared delusion does the pitcher plant use to consume them? Or is he only interested in feeding on ships that all desperately want to get home? Seems like a limited food source.

No that doesn't make sense.

Later we discover that while the pitcher plant is still giving the bulk of the crew a fantasy of home, he can also make Seven believe she's seeing success in escaping the beast. Thus, it is clear that the pitcher plant can produce more than one delusion per ship.

So why neglect Seven and Naomi?

Simple. They're all dead!!
