Star Trek: Renegades

Why would CBS tell some rinky-dink fan production house what their larger plans (or lack of them) were at all, other than to say "thanks, but no thanks" to their "pilot"?

They didn't tell the production house - they told a "top entertainment" attorney, and he/she told the production house. ;)

But I will agree with you on one point... CBS really is in no hurry at this point as they make money doing nothing. But ultimately the film franchise will have little impact on CBS' final decision.

But earlier you said....

CBS is simply holding out until the film series ends, and I highly suspect they are banking on the next film not doing so well. Once Paramount bows out of future Trek films (for the time being), CBS can make their move and revisit Trek without the perceived "baggage" of the NuTrek films.
So which is it?

Obviously CBS can sit back and make a percentage of money doing nothing. But the fact of the matter is they can make more money, and increase the shelf life of their merchandising agreements (where the real money is) by launching another show.

But they certainly aren't in a major rush as Paramount gets to do all of the heavy lifting (money) while they still make money.

They have "top men" working on it right now:

Agreed. I get the vibe that somebody at CBS just isn't a big fan of scifi in general, and Star Trek in particular.

But I just get that tingling feeling that when Paramount/JJ-Trek run out of steam, and clamour for tv trek becomes unassailable...hmmm...

Well TV studios do stuff... just like film, in waves. Right now sci-fi on TV isn't exactly hot. I suspect studio chiefs view the glut of superhero shows as more "action shows." But if X-Files return is big, and more importantly, if Star Wars is huge, CBS will once again ask themselves, "What sci-fi properties do we have that we can cash in right now with..."

The first place you need to start then is your scripts. If the next episodes are anything like the first, a good script editor is something you guys are in dire need of.

Way to be diplomatic...

Karzak can respond appropriately as and when he wishes, but I thought that was very diplomatic and appropriate in response to Tom's request for feedback. From reviews I've read, any future episodes need better script editing. There's no way to fudge that.

I didn't think he was being particularly harsh there.

Renegades has potential, but the comments about getting a good script editor are pretty fair, IMO. Most fan productions would benefit from same. Including my own.

I've said it many times: good screenwriting is HARD. It's a fairly demanding discipline that requires a lot of economy, dialog which sounds naturalistic but really isn't (no one is really that concise) and is underpinned by a lot of structure that is largely invisible to viewers and filmmaking dilettantes.

With a cast as big as Renegades has a super tight script would have helped a lot. Sadly, they didn't have one.

There were some last minute cast changes (for instance Sean Young having to come in as a new character, because Robert Picardo could only do one day) that had to get quick re-writes. Also at the shoot, there were some schedule issues going against the shooting schedule that caused some workarounds to what was filmed vs. the original script. These things happen and we intend to be better prepared for them, we learn from mistakes made and try not to make them again.

Each episode going forward will be about 44 minutes (average TV show length). We will be keeping the sets and already have established VFX models (the Icarus for instance) to help speed up production between episodes.

Hey, whatever the fracas over funding, good luck to you. I look forward to viewing the pilot and seeing the level of quality you guys can produce!

A new video review, that might be more entertaining than the movie. BEWARE OF SPOILERS:

HA! I tend to agree with most of this guy's points. The script, shot choices, and editing are problematic. Honestly, the script seems to be the weakest link in the thing, and contributes to many of the film's other deficiencies.

I still shy away from pillorying the acting because—pros mixed in the cast or not—it's still a fan film, and poor editing tends to harm the performances, good or not.

If he saw the preview version I saw then I don't think's fair to pick on the VFX, as many of the shots there were unfinished or temps.

:rommie: Top. Men.

I'm rather curious to see some version of this but TBH I can't say as I'm tempted to shell out sixty bucks for it.
