Sign and trade really isn't much of a thing in baseball. Why would a pitcher agree to that, unless you agree to pay him more than the going rate? and why would you do that AND give up prospects when you can just pay him LESS cash in the offseason than the overpay you'd have to give him to forgo FA?
Makes more sense in the NBA where you're kinda limited on pay, so getting max contract either way.
Don't know why the Red Sox were rumored to be in on Cueto, but glad he went elsewhere first, for exactly the reasons I said. Don't want to give up a prospect haul AND overpay him when I can just regular pay him later if I want him. You get a small exclusive window at end of the season, but that close, they're going to test the waters anyway...
