What are your turn-ons/turn-offs?

Another buddy of mine prefers skinny, almost anorectic women. I fail to see how that is attractive. He even lifts them up to find out their weight (unnecessary to say that he does so without asking)

Your buddy has some serious issues. Lift the wrong woman w/o asking, and he's going to be in jail.

Ah, I forgot. Americans like to sue each other. Getting financial compensation for harrassment is difficult in Germany.

Seriously, lifting women without their consent is one thing. They have to fight back. It's not okay. You don't have to put up with it.
Being touched inappropriately is another thing. I don't like the German law which protects and favors offenders and does nothing to protect victims. Doing this in the US you are more quickly in jail than in Germany. Here you are likely to get through with it or to receive only mild punishment. But that's a differnt story.

As to my buddy: he's just an odd customer. You have to say `stop´ and he gives up.

When it comes to looks, I'm rather average myself, so I can't afford to raise the bar too high. That said, there are very few physical attributes that are a turn off for me, it's more about the whole person.

Turn ons:
Self-assurance, not to be confused with arrogance. Someone truly self-assured doesn't have to try and diminish others to make themselves look better.
Some muscles, but not too much (the dedicated athlete mentality doesn't appeal to me, as I like to relax and enjoy life as well as exercise).

Turn offs:
Egotistical bastards who think they're entitled to whatever they want, for whatever reason. Typical case: Khan Noonien Singh.
Fanaticism of any kind.
Sexism.
Poor hygiene.
Long hair growing over a bald spot. If you're going bald, face the fact and shave it all off, that's much more attractive...
Halitosis (bad breath can be the unfortunate side effect of some medicines, it's not always the result of poor dental hygiene, but whatever the cause, it turns me off)

Methinks you have some misconceptions about the extent to which the American legal system and law enforcement give a fuck about women being harassed/sexually assaulted.

Also, your friend sounds like a dick. Tell him to stop grabbing women.

Shocked to hear that. On the other hand, there is still the Bill Cosby case and other celebrities who exploited their position.

Celebreties buying themselves top lawyers and getting through with their crimes is disgusting......

Another turn-off, by the way: claiming to be the greatest benefactor while having skeletons in one's closet.....

This has nothing to do with suing for financial compensation (which, yes, some Americans are ridiculously quick to do). I meant that someone would call the police and charge him with assault.

I don't understand the distinction you're trying to make. It sounds like you're saying that lifting someone without their permission is not okay, but touching someone inappropriately is... but I doubt that's what you really mean! Besides, in most contexts (I'm assuming the two people aren't friends or in a relationship), lifting someone without their permission is touching them inappropriately.

Yes, quite odd. Do any of the women on the receiving end of his lifts actually respond positively?

I must add, that he didn't do that with strangers, only with female class mates he was familiar with. None of them didn't like it, all of them put a stop to it quickly..... He tried to lift me up once, but kept from doing it again. I was too heavy, he didn't say that of course. It was my luck that I put on some weight at that time. I wasn't fat, but close to being that. My higher weight lead to serious health problems, so I worked out hard to get back in form, not to do my class mate a favor or someone else, as I will never be skinny with a flat belly, but to be healthier.

There are females who lie about harassment and inappropriate touching just to give someone they have problems with a wipe. Others are ashamed and are afraid of telling someone...... It's a crying shame, so.

Another turn-off: Oscar Pistorius

I once admired him because he was a hero for handicapped people. He destroyed his reputation in one fateful moment. He is obviously choleric and a control freak. The judges had to deal with him. I fail to see why women are attracted to choleric men, as Pistorius already has a new girl-friend.

^No offense, but you just reminded me of a huge turn-off: guys who regularly refer to women as "females." Ugh.

None taken. Woman, girl or lady is better.

English is not my first language, but that isn't an excuse for not thinking about my choice of words. I understand that the term `female´ may be used in a condescending way. And that's indeed a turn-off. Phrases like `she's just a female´and so on....depending on the context.

I shouldn't jump on that train as a woman...... ;)

Now it's going to be intimate.......

Do men prefer Hollywood cut?????? Don't take this question too serious, but it is the turn-on/off thread. I guess there are guys who don't like insufficiently shaved women......;)

Clinical terms are okay in clinical settings, but being too clinical in an informal setting, and when directly addressing someone, is usually annoying. Of course, I still call a group of people, men and women, "you guys," so it's not like I'm an expert on any of this. :p

^Indeed. Of course there are times when it is appropriate to refer to women as "females." That's what they are. But in daily usage it's an outmoded, patronizing term generally used by men who have trouble accepting that women are also people.

I stopped using it when I saw the Ferengi using it. Even way back in my teens, I knew that calling a woman a "female" in a non-clinical setting was likely some kind of derogatory remark.

I mean, I loved Quark, Rom, and Nog, but every time they used that word, I just wanted to grab them by the ears and twist. That's one of the reasons I'm glad Ishka became a character. I was always rooting for her.

I love that she was a brilliant, financially savvy Ferengi businesswoman who showed her male counterparts (this is where it's appropriate to use more clinical terms), that gender didn't matter, sex didn't matter, it was all in the lobes, and she had the biggest lobes of them all.

I'm sorry, I seem to have strayed into Star Trek territory.

What about guys who aren't calling a square dance using "gals"?

What about guys who aren't calling a square dance using "gals"?

"Gals" doesn't bother me. Neither does "chicks." I use "chicks" all the time, and refer to men as "dudes." I understand why some women might find the terms offensive, but in my experience they don't come loaded with the kind of spineless misogyny that "females" usually carries, and so I am fine with them.

When I taught Junior High Sunday school, I called my kids Dudes and Dudettes. They loved it. :techman:

I had a boss --an older man, very Southern-- who would always refer to the female department mangers as "gals." I HATED that, especially since the male mangers were always refereed to by name but the women were just "gals:" You're a great gal, go get that gal in charge of housewares, one of the gals is on vacation this week; hey, gal, get this done for me, will ya? UGH. I don't even know if he ever learned my name.

I suppose it really depends on context and tone. If it feels disrespectful or groups all the women together while the men are treated as individuals, then it really pisses me off. When I was growing up, back in the Dark Ages, "chick" was very disrespectful and had a negative connotation but I think now it's used in a much more humorous manner and younger people find it very cute.

Totally different path:
Are you turned on or off by a person's height? My husband is quite tall and his best friend is quite short. His friend says that tall men get more attention and respect--have better luck with the ladies. I find myself attracted to actors of various heights, but most of them are probably considered tall or average height.

Scotty's habit of calling all the women, especially engineering personnel, lass or lassie is cute. I never heard any of them complaining about. Scotty has charm. I don't know, if any of the women liked it to be called lass or they simply indulged him......
