There should have been another choice on the poll;

"Holy cow, man, let's see number 3 first, then make a decision."

Watching Star Trek (2009) right now. I've never seen a more stunning Star Trek film. As much as I love so much of Star Trek, from a pure visual perspective, Abrams movies make the rest look like they were made by amateurs.

Aye, they're beautiful pictures.

yes trek 2009 was a beautiful thing to behold with also a beautiful cast

Way too early to tell at the moment, as STB is still a year from release. See how that goes before any decisions are made about the fourth film.

I appreciate JJ's achievement in reinvigorating the franchise, but his movies have an aggressive tone I dislike, so I am hoping he will continue to let others do the directing.

TOS could have a pretty aggressive tone as well.

How about ST: The Wrath of Khan?

How about ST: The Wrath of Khan?

Including The Wrath of Khan.

Dang if TWOK was amateur I would love to have that amateur ability. The mutara nebula scene alone had wonderfully crafted effect, camera work was excellent as well as outstanding direction. Also the scene of Spocks death was probably one the best shot and directed death scenes of movies in the last 40 years. Excellent work all around.

It was excellent work, thirty-plus years ago. Time moves forward. Another thirty years, I hope that there are people making Trek films that makes Abrams work look like it was done by amateurs.

Its still excellent work now. I watch movies like the original War of the Worlds(1953), The Forbidden Plantet etc. and they still holds up well with story, effects and direction. Great movies and highly entertaining. Sci Fi movies often tend to hold up well(of course not all there are some real stinkers out there) over the years if their production values were high. I fully expect Abrams Treks to still look good to people 30 years from now in effects and story. I am not a fan of NuTrek but even I can see it will hold in many aspects 30 years from now for people who enjoyed the film when it came out and for new viewers as the years roll by.

JJ's fine for Star Wars but not for Trek.

Trek needs someone who can put bums on seats AND deliver good Trek.

The bums on seats is the most important, but it's not everything.

Visually, TWOK was striking given the time and the budget but it's not nearly in the same league as the nuTrek movies. The cinematography, design and production values of Abrams's films are outstanding.

I imagine that Lin can keep directing these movies as long as he likes and that Paramount would be damn glad to have him.

Well they had to use models and other techniques to make the effects so they just couldn't stuff as much as modern day movies do know. I at times do like to see movies with less effects because then the producers tend to add more dramatic and intensity to the story. The cool thing about TWOK was the cat and mouse chase that Kirk and Khan were engaged in and the effects really became the icing. Sometimes less can be more. I do enjoy the effects in Abrams films(i.e. Especially STID) but I also miss just seeing the camera slow down a bit and we get to see the actors do their thing especially when there is a show down. Interestingly enough in STID I think the Admiral Marcus character was getting to a TWOK type showdown with Kirk and it started to get interesting it was just that Kirk just wasn't on that level so it was a lopsided battle in terms of technology and command style. Basically Marcus had all the chess moves and Kirk had none. So even though the effects in STID are superior the confrontation in TWOK was actually a more satisfying one to watch then in STID. Imo of course.

I'm trying to figure out what Abrams did that is "not good for Trek."

I love Trek 09 and find it to be both fun and have fascinating character moments. The pacing is quite fast but I can live with that. I'm still reflecting on different aspects of the characters even 6 years later.

As for TWOK, for the sheer force of will that Meyer and Bennett had to do in order to construct it, it is a masterpiece of cinema. I love reading BTS stuff because there was a lot of drama that many don't realize.

My problem is that Star Trek needs to move out from under TWOK's shadow. And before anyone misunderstands me, I like TWOK just fine (top 3 Trek films for me). The storytelling, themes and editing are well done. But, that isn't all that Trek is about and constantly comparing every blasted film that comes after it to it is unfair and cheapens the other films achievements.
