OK I installed Windows 8 last night as I hadn't used it in over a year, and then 8.1 after much stress and drama..

The installation seemed to go fine. I did however turn off updates in the options when it got to that part just so that I could have the PC running after the last reboot as it does that a few times..

However it still said it was installing updates even though I hadn't set it to do that. This is where the problems started. It kept looping 3 times with this message.

"Failure configuring windows updates reverting changes"

It did this 3 times and most of my day was spent pulling my hair out with this. Eventually I did a repair and things seemed sorted. I did updates and that was sorted.

However after doing that I find that nearly all my installed programs had been wiped out. Everything was working in 8.1 now but all my programs like irfanview and Steam, and my photo editor were all gone..

Now with Windows 10 on the horizon for those that might know is the change over from Windows 7 smooth?

I am worried now with all the drama I had yesterday.

Depending on how you did the installation, it is quite possible you wiped out your programs or otherwise made them inaccessible to your 8.1 instance. There is not a good way to correct that other than restoring 7 or 8 (not 8.1) and doing the upgrade again. This would assume you have backups/system restore images appropriate to the task, though. There is no way to unwind actions for which you did not create backups.

Well I am doing a backup today then putting in the new hard disk I have as my main drive, then copying that to the old one as my new 2nd drive.. Should be interesting.

OK howcome a brand new Seagate 2tb external drive only shows 232 gb of storage?

I had to use Disk Management to get the proper storage size, and this was a drive brand new in the box..
