TOS Hypothetical Question

I rather liked DS9, with some caveats:

  • Sisko-as-Prophet is just wrong, especially given what happened to his mother. HIjol, I agree with your recommendation that this element be explained via dream sequence.
  • Jake could have been made far more interesting than he was. Lots of spies masquerade as reporters, and it would have been interesting to see him being tempted and/or turned by Dukat et al. As it stands, I'd trade the Jake episodes for more of the Kira-Odo dynamic (see below).
  • Odo and Kira's late-series relationship was not handled well. I'd like to have seen a more natural progression. What did the two of them talk about in Jadzia's closet? Did they have arguments later? How did things turn so ordinary so fast? Why didn't Kira offer to join Odo when the time came? I've never understood why they didn't discuss it beforehand.
  • I would gladly give up Jadzia's last encounter with Dukat for something more dignified--think Spock acting as shuttlecraft pilot in "The Immunity Syndrome," except with a sad ending.
  • The final episode--not to introduce spoilers, but ouch.
All that said, I still liked DS9. And I would trade nearly all of Voyager and TNG for a fourth season of TOS. (I'd keep "Blood Fever" in the former and "The Emissary" in the latter.)

Hmm . . . we do seem to be venturing a trifle OT. Shall we draw a veil over this part of the conversation? ;)

These double entendres can be Habit forming. :alienblush:

Nun the less, what you have said is true.

You people have to break this annoying habit.

Hmm. When a nun smiles, does she wimple rather than dimple? (I know, I know--I should be doing penance for that one, right? ;) )

In all seriousness, though, isn't there something rather monastic about Vulcans (except during pon farr, of course)? The comparison does rather suggest itself: asceticism in matters of the body, a simple and restricted diet, an adherence to a strict rule for the greater good of society--even Spock's later death and rebirth might figure in. Thoughts? . . .

Q: What Star Trek shows/movies would you be willing to sacrifice in exchange for a 4th season of classic Trek? As a part of the deal, the quality of the shows would be at least equal to 3rd season Trek. Consider that the alternate universe gods would only accept the deal if the value of the sacrificed Trek was sufficient. For example, "I'd give up the second season of Enterprise" probably wouldn't cut it. What would?

I'd gladly give up most of TNG (including the movies), all of VOY, seasons 1-3 of ENT, and TAS.

My main conditions would be that I'd want a sufficient budget to do the show (comparable with S1-2), and Gene Coon, D.C. Fontana, David Gerrold, and Robert Justman to be involved with the show. In other words, I'd want to have a reason to believe it would be better than TOS S3 and it wouldn't just be more diminishing returns.

Agreed, and, to put a Nuspin on this notion, witness the way the Elders are ringed around the Katric Arc in NuTrek I. You can almost hear the Gregorian (Sarekian?) Chants.

Though, it is difficult at times to understand the dialog for reasons of annunciation and mispronunciation.

It can be a real conundrum.

<I am so very sorry. Not enough coffee yet. And my usual accompanying coffee rolls? I have nun.>

I'd give up:

All of ENT
All of VOY (except for the pilot)
Probably about 1/4 of TNG (would be specific episodes though, not entire seasons)
First season of DS9 (except for the pilot)
All the TNG movies except FC

In exchange, I'd want a full 4th season (24-26 episodes) with the production team members from season 1 and 2 (Coon, Fontana, Roddenberry, Lucas, Justman and Black) working together.

You'd give up "Duet"? I think it's still generally considered one of the best episodes of the series.
DonIago, please forgive my jumping in here, but I wouldn't give up "Duet"--not by any means. I would certainly keep it, not least because it foreshadows the romantic attraction between Odo and Kira. Odo is so brusque with so many, yet he gives Kira a drink without being asked to do so; in my estimation, that kind and intuitive gesture speaks volumes.

Nice one, HIjol! I'm afraid I haven't been able to watch the movies owing to fear of cross-pollination and overexposure to darkness. But I can easily imagine those chants. In fact, you have just reminded me that there was a Vulcan monastery in ENT called P'Jem; I hadn't thought of that when I made my original post, but it certainly does round out the analogy.

Though, it is difficult at times to understand the dialog for reasons of annunciation and mispronunciation.
Indeed. And I'll confess that I find poor enunciation and mispronunciation to most annoying--perhaps one of life's smaller crosses to bear, but I find them irritating nuntheless.

It can be a real conundrum.
Oh yes, very much so, especially sins even newsreaders habitually fall into the trap of poor pronunciation owing to sloppy enunciation. If people spoke how they wrote, this wouldn't happen so often, or so I believe.

<I am so very sorry. Not enough coffee yet. And my usual accompanying coffee rolls? I have nun.>
Don't be sorry. There is nothing to forgive (or shall I say ask penance for?). Wordplay is my default setting no matter how much or how little caffeine I have consumed in a given day. I know, I know--get me to a punnery. Posthaste . . .

Guys, this is a TOS forum thread. If you need to go into other shows, that's Gen Trek, not TOS.
