Pine and Quinto sign on for 4th Star Trek film

personally, I always thought the movies would end with the third one and maybe make more sequels set far in the future with new characters and the current ones making cameos

Maybe some of the supporting cast (uhura) will get killed off by the Borg in ST4 :)

or better yet, Shatner's Kirk coming back from the death as a time traveler zombie who hates her for getting in the way of his epic love story with Spock.

I think you are over reacting , I dont think uhura will get killed off . It is clear that the reason why we know about pine and quinto is because they are the leads.

I am sure in a few days or months the other cast including zoe and urban will sign up for the sequels as well , sequels by the way I feel should have ended with the 3rd film.

they make a good point, though, about the fact that 6 millions for the male lead of a big franchise is really cheap if you compare it to the paycheck other actors get.

I think my humor might be a bit british if you actually believe I was serious with my 'Shatner the zombie killing Uhura' "speculation"...

exactly. 6 million is chop change compared to what other actors get like RDJ but if a trek film was to gross about a billion, I am sure their pay rise could go from 6 million to 16 million.

Wasn't Patrick Stewart's fee for Nemesis something like $15 million?

Whatever, it shows ID can't have been as big of a disappointment as some claim if they're doubling the lead's pay for the threequel.

If memory serves I believe Shatner got $2m for Trek IV which must = roughly 6m now?

in context of his time it was a lot but most of nowadays 'barely big' actors in Hollywood get at least 10 millions for a lead role in big franchises. I seem to remember, also, that Nimoy had to fight for the studio to be fair with him and he also faught so that in his last appearance DeForest Kelley would get a decent amount of money (they were being cheap with him too) that would make it possible for him to retire with some financial stability. Thinking about that, it shouldn't surprise me that the more things change the more they stay the same...

I honestly think that Zoe Saldana should get at least the same paycheck Quinto gets even if his character is more important. According to the THR's article, Paramount's 'issue' is the rising star status of Saldana and Pine and while I'm under no illusion she can get payed the same money Pine will get, she shouldn't get too much less compared to Quinto who might one of the protagonists, but he isn't as big as her.

This cast of actors might be more down to earth than 80% of popular actors in hollywood right now, so they must know that no one is 'sacred' and they can all lose their job if the studio thinks so because Paramount doesn't care. So yeah, Paramount might not be too fair compared to other studios but I think it would be a mistake for any of them to lose a role in trek just because the studio is penny-pinching. In Zoe's case, with 3 franchises she basically doesn't have to worry about not getting new work for some years and while her filming schedule might be busy, she still has space for new opportunities in other movies. Other actresses (and a bunch of actors too) would kill to be in her place.

I think the difference being that Stewart's career was actually growing away from Star Trek and he was burned out from playing the character. So they had to give him a quarter of the Nemesis budget, because he had non-Trek options.

Pine and Quinto's careers simply haven't taken off, so Paramount is only competing with themselves.

So the new movies get to keep their leading actors without being crippled by the cost. Seems like a win to me.

A story like "Errand of Mercy" would feature basically just Kirk and Spock of the main cast. They wouldn't need the rest at all, or maybe one of the them for the few shots of the Enterprise while the main action takes place planet-side.

Though the modern Trek big three seems to be Spock, Kirk, Uhura, I still think of the new cast, Urban's McCoy is still spot on McCoy. The general rule though is that it is the Kirk and Spock show.

I've got to admit, I was hoping they'd go in a different direction with Trek after the third film. Away from Kirk and Co.

With Pegg writing this one I might like it more, but I doubt I'll feel any happier with the cast.

I would NOT be cool with them ditching the others. Kirk and Spock are awesome, but they're not "the characters" for me. I much prefer the ensemble, heck throw Carol Marcus in there full-time as well.

I know the feeling. On other hand, it was always a bit silly that there was no real turnover in the bridge crew over the course of decades. ("Wait? Everybody still has the same jobs all the way into the movie era?")

A bit more turnover might be more realistic.

Why would they move away from Kirk and Spock? Kirk and Spock are Star Trek.

Not to everyone.

My first love Trekwise was the original cast movies, then TNG and eventually my favourite DS9.

I love Kirk, Spock and co. but don't like many of the new cast and would like some original Trek, not a rehash of TOS.
