Dick Van Patten passed away last night.

Dick Van Patten, the star of TV’s Eight is Enough, has died. He was 86.

“I am sorry to report this sad news,” his rep said in a statement released to media Tuesday. “His family will not be doing any press at this time.” The cause of death is still unknown.

Me, I always remember him as the king of Druidia in Spaceballs and how sweetly hilarious he was.

Rest in peace, sir.

Well, that answers the question as to who #3, after James Horner and pro wrestler Buddy Landel, would be. Damn.

Re: Dick Van Pattern has passed away.

He first entered my world on Eight Is Enough, but I'll always remember him for Planet Druidia's uncrackable air shield code.

1-2-3-4-5

Rest In Peace, sir!

Re: Dick Van Pattern has passed away.

I probably first saw him in guest or supporting roles during the 50s and 60s, he started on one of the earliest shows, Mama, which ran from '49-'56. Always dependable for a good performance.

Same here. At least I have both Eight is Enough and Spaceballs on DVD to continue to enjoy his (what I consider anyway) best work.

RIP Tom.

Re: Dick Van Pattern has passed away.

He was a popular character actor back in the day. He popped up everywhere, including The Night Stalker. Then he had a regular gig on When Things Were Rotten, where he really got to show off his comic talent. And, of course, Eight Is Enough. Such an affable, likeable guy.

RIP, Dick van Patten. :(

Re: Dick Van Pattern has passed away.

Great, Appealing TV face, good comedy timing, reportedly a Good Man and generous actor, always laughing...

86 Years

... a Life well-lived!

Hope he is now in that big Comedy Holodeck Program in the Sky.

I think we are past 3 by now. This year is stacking the deck of the dead. Christopher Lee was only about a week ago.

1-2-3-4-5? That's the kind of combination an idiot would have on his luggage!

Rest in peace, Mr Patten.

Re: Dick Van Pattern has passed away.

As I said on Facebook, my favorite quote from him is as the Abbot from Robin Hood: Men in Tights:

Crowdmember: "Good morrow, Abbot."
Abbot: "Good Morrow."
Crowdmember: "Good Morrow, Abbot."
Abbot: "Good Morrow."
Crowdmember (in the voice of Lou Costello): "Hey Abbot!"
Abbot: "I hate that guy!"

Rest in peace, Mr. van Patten, and don't worry, they'll never guess the combination to the air shield.

Re: Dick Van Pattern has passed away.

^^ He got to do the "Hey, Abbott!" line himself in When Things Were Rotten. :D

Re: Dick Van Pattern has passed away.

I remember him not only from Eight is Enough, but also from several Disney movies (back when Disney movies were actually funny and wholesome).

^What do you mean, 'used to'? They still are, albeit with a modern sensibility.

I'll also remember him for Spaceballs and for his appearances in music videos for two Weird Al songs:

Rest in peace, sir (and rest assured that the sentient cat that hates you is burning in Hell.)

Re: Dick Van Pattern has passed away.

I'm currently doing a complete watch through of "Eight Is Enough", thanks to it FINALLY being made available on DVD.

The show (my favourite as a child) unfortunately doesn't hold up that well but van Patten is ALWAYS THE BEST THING about it. He has GREAT comedic timing in it and is consistently always better than the material.

R.I.P. Mr. Bradford.

Eight is Enough is my favorite "dramedy". It may not "hold up" under today's "standards", or be a realistic portrayal of how families are, but it's an excellent portrayal of how families should be.
