Pine and Quinto sign on for 4th Star Trek film

It's important to understand they have OPTIONS for a fourth film. That doesn't mean that Paramount is planning one. It just means that if STB does well, and Paramount feels that a fourth movie is justified, they have there two most important actors in the bag.

It's how Marvel Studios learned from RDJ, and gave all new actors contracts for multiple films. It doesn't mean that actually have to use them for that many movies, just that the actors are now legally bound to make one should Marvel want them.

Is Justin Lin directing this one as well?

For a 4th film, I will like to see JJ Abrams come back , I get the feeling he will be back.

JJ probably won't have time, IIRC he's directing all three of the SW sequel trilogy.

As for The Rock and Jason Statham: They'd make a pretty good pair of, say, Starfleet Marine troop leaders or something like that.

The Rock will play Champion Prime, who's forced to go back in space and time to meet his younger NuChampion self. No word yet on NuSeven.

Ok but what about the others? These two might be the main guys but if they don't get the fab 7 or at least Saldana and Urban too I'm uninterested. It's not like they can really have a movie with kirk and spock only and the rest of the crew transfered to other ships..and I hate recasts. It's like different characters to me.

It's nice paramount is already thinking about a fourth movie. It means that if trek 3 makes the money, they are not done with trek yet.

Quite a few of the best TOS episodes gave little or nothing to do to Scotty, Uhura, Sulu, and Chekov that different characters couldn't have done. For example, while Nichols was under contract to use, I doubt Zoe Saldana would sign on to be Uhura for just a few lines of, "Hailing frequencies open, sir," so someone else could be the communications officer on the bridge for that small bit. Same thing if all that's required of Chekov is to say things like, "Course laid in, sir." Let's be honest, anyone as well as Sulu could've been the helmsman in both TMP and TWOK, and it wouldn't have required any major changes in the story (and heck, they were going to do TMP without Nimoy, after all).

Given these actors do seem to be in demand and have little trouble finding work, it could well happen that someone will not be available for a fourth movie or may just opt out. At that point, some real decisions would have to be made regarding the characters beyond Kirk and Spock.

It would be gutsy to come up with a story that featured Kirk, Spock, and probably McCoy so prominently that while you may still need a helmsman, engineer, and so on, the specific characters of Sulu, Scotty, and the others aren't really needed.

I don't assign the above a high probability of happening, but I could see a slightly fairer chance going forward with only five or six of the "big seven."

It would also not be such a bad thing to shuffle the cast a bit. I would not mind a crew shakeup, and while that hasn't really happened in the movies (aside from Sulu's departure in 6), it is not unheard of in the TV series.

as much as I would love to see the seven united for a long time, changes in the line up could help to set the NuVerse further apart from Prime and would open different possibilities.
Of course one could also just focus on other members of the seven a little bit more. a movie with more focus on checkov or scotty, a major plotline that revolves around sulu or uhura/mccoy. not everything has to necessarily revolve around the trinity.
bring in chapel and rand to expand the roster a little more.

Not sure why but I always assumed that this was a fixed trilogy.

Oh well. Keep em coming.

I seem to have it in my head that was Orci's intention, to do a trilogy, as trilogies are his "preferred storytelling medium." I guess now that he's been removed from writing and directing, the decision is no longer his to make.

And will they bring in The Rock and Jason Statham?

Yes yes, I say let's give him a chan....

I read somewhere that JJ wasn't doing the second SW sequel because he was going to take a year off to spend time with his family.

No, that was Bobby Jindal. He will go back to India. To be an Indian again.

I had that thought, also, but I agree with Hux, "keep 'em comin'!"

May the Fourth be with you (has anyone used that one yet?)

 :techman:

Just saw this on fb and it's great to know.. though I assume this doesn't guarantee a fourth movie? If number three bombs?

Pretty exciting though, could be watching New Trek for quite a few years to come!

The article has an almost passive aggressive tone on the negative side. Also the part about Zoe not mentioning trek too in her post about Horner's death because she is 'subconsciously' not promoting trek (and that is hint she is out of the fourth movie if made) is wtf eyeroll to infinity material.
The guys in the comments are almost on the level of the conspiracy theorists that believe there will be no third movie. Too much assumptions stated as facts with little to lame so called 'evidence'. E g., those saying that Zoe Saldana is 'unhappy' with trek (since when? ) and wants out and basically they were planning her departure since stid and will kill her in trek 3. wishful thinking?
Not saying that it's not possible for any of them to not return, but of all the cast the only one who ever implied he was done with trek after a third movie was Quinto and even him signed for a fourth. The rest seems to be premature speculation.
