Sofia Boutella casting...thoughts on her & her character? (spoilers)

I don't see a thread here about Sofia Boutella being confirmed as cast in Star Trek Beyond. I didn't see Kingsman yet (waiting for it to come up to rent on Amazon Instant video). I'm wondering for those who have seen her in that and any other things, how you feel about the casting and what you think she'll play?

Here comes the possible spoilers part. It was rumored in early Feb that the studio was looking for 3 new female leads and a Bryan Cranston type villain. This was not long after the big shake up happened Orci was out and Simon Pegg and Doug Jung in as writers, and Justin Lin in as Director. I only say this because I'm not sure if that's going to turn out to be part of the Orci script, and not the new script, since Jung and Pegg hadn't written much at that point.

Anyway, the 3 rumored females at that time were Bone's ex, a Federation ship captain "being set up as Kirk's match", and the President of the United Federation of Planets.

Seems if these 3 female characters are part of the new script then Sofia is likely one of them. My vote is Ship captain, but I've not seen enough of her to know if she can carry that off.

whoops sorry. I only see 2 pages when I look at the forum. Is there something in the settings blocking older threads from my view?

The forum default is to display only threads active within the last month, but you can temporarily change it to display more if you wish by selecting another setting under "Display Options" at the bottom of the forum index. (See attachment)

If you're looking for previous threads discussing a particular topic, you can also use the forum search feature at the upper right. Doing a search for Sofia Boutella's name was how I pulled up the older thread in this case.

At first glance, I guess she'd fit as the rival(?) Federation captain. Young like Kirk, another prodigy.

Whoever's cast as McCoy's ex-wife, I really want McCoy's ex and the Federation president to be the same person - after all, "She took the whole damn planet in the divorce!"

OUCH! Poor Bones! But I'm a bit bias here, he's my absolute favorite TOS and New Trek character.

I am a bit unhappy about them using the ex wife actually. I already hate her based on that whole bit and what it implies. :( Either Bones was being a drama queen (which is entirely possible, knowing him ;) ) or she is pretty awful to make him want to leave the friggin planet! :( I suspect it'll be a joke appearance or something, and not really effect the plot if it is the wife, and not an ex girlfriend or something. They implied in the New Trek comics that Dr. Elizabeth Dehner had a thing with Bones and that's why she didn't appear during their version of "Where no man has gone before". (She decided not to transfer to the Enterprise when she found out he was there). Anyway, that's kind of interesting from the standpoint of Orci being a consultant for that, so while not canon, it could be that he tells them what stories they can do and what characters can be killed off.... etc... perhaps she'll be Bones' ex girlfriend? I could be okay with that.

I do wish if there are more female characters that they'd release the casting info tho! And officially confirm Idris too!!

Re: Sofia Boutella casting...thoughts on her & her character? (spoiler

She makes me think about a vulcan. Also a villain, or an ally of the main villain. Perhaps a two-timing character.

That rumor might not be true because at the time they didn't really have a story yet or if they did, I don't think it was already so detailed on the new characters. It's possible one of the requests by the producers was to have more female characters but as far as specifics go I have some doubts. Anyway, if the rumor is true then I too could see her playing the captain. Not Bones' ex honestly. Aside from the fact that to me that was the most unbelievable part of the rumor because I don't see how they can include her in the story in an useful way for the same reason I don't see other family members making appearances unless they have a big role in the story or are in starfleet too like kirk's mother or uhura's father
The president, according to the rumor, was supposed to be an older lady so Sofia doesn't fit.

Frankly, I can see they cast this actress because she is good for certain roles so my bet is a villain (could be the captain too). I don't see her playing some quiet woman or a scientist like Carol. Bones' ex might have been hard with him after they divorced but I think she was a common woman and I don't think she was in starfleet. In his comic it's implied it was both their fault the marriage didn't last, they were just a normal couple whose relationship fell apart for real life issues (relatable too, doctors tend to always sacrifice their personal life a bit even when they don't want to) but they married because they were in love with each other and their marriage had been happy for a while. He is a drama queen when he implies he joined starfleet b/c his wife took the whole planet lol. The comics imply his reason was another. .. (Spoiler: from what I remember, one of his patients, a little girl, dreamed to work on spaceships and thus join starfleet so when she dies, Bones feels compelled to do what the kid didn't have a chance to. In part in her honor, in part because after his marriage ends he has nothing keeping him on earth so he can start a new life)

I dunno but turning his ex into Xena would be surely a plot twist but not a convincing one for me.

Re: Sofia Boutella casting...thoughts on her & her character? (spoiler

I agree, what you said about that rumor might not be true for those reasons. I've thought that. It seemed early for them to know what characters, since Simon and Jung hadn't really written much yet, but maybe there were some specific requests, who knows. We'll know when more comes to light about Sofia's character.

I agree I don't see her as McCoy's exwife, she seems youngish to be her. Also I'd think a sort of "southern bell" is what they'd be looking for and she doesn't really fit that. I found what little they showed of his ex in the comics, she seemed kind of a twit. So again, not crazy about them adding her based on that. An intelligent woman like Dehner however, yes I'd like that (but that's not Sofia certainly) and she could fit into a plot easily enough. Interesting to note that in Starfleet Academy books his exwife had a different first name and they didn't really say much more about the break up other than Bones being upset about it and trying to move on.

I agree, her look sort of says Vulcan or Romulan, but I don't think that she'll be that necessarily, and not necessarily a villain. If they do go that way, I hope they don't rip off Kingsman too much and make her Idris Elba's hitwoman. :-/ But I don't think she should be the villain the rest of her career just because of that one breakout role either. I'm sure she can do other things and would like to. She is exotic looking, beautiful, and extremely athletic dancer. It may be that they cast her more for those qualities, then necessarily for her to play another villain or an alien. That would again, not so much fit into the President or Bones' ex parts but would fit a Ship captain, perhaps in competition with Kirk.

Another thought, Justin Lin was talking about new aliens and worlds, so maybe she'll be an alien we've never seen in Star Trek before?

I dunno but turning his ex into Xena would be surely a plot twist but not a convincing one for me.

LOL... I just hope it's not Katee Sackoff because that would be AWKWARD! :wtf:

Re: Sofia Boutella casting...thoughts on her & her character? (spoiler

We know nothing canonically about McCoy's ex except that he was bitter about the divorce. She can be anything the writers want.

Re: Sofia Boutella casting...thoughts on her & her character? (spoiler

For whatever it's worth, here's the rather dodgy rendition of McCoy's wife from IDW's McCoy backstory issue:

Why do you have to say such things, now I will be really pissed when it doesn't happen. :guffaw:

Re: Sofia Boutella casting...thoughts on her & her character? (spoiler

If the story really takes place "out there" as part of the five-year mission, I'd hope Boutella is playing a role as a lead alien antagonist. Not the villain per se, but someone who could be Kirk's foil, nonetheless. I hope she's not another Starfleet captain. I wouldn't want to think the Enterprise is going "where no one has gone, before," except for another Federation ship.

Off topic, but I haven't found anything official one way or the other about Alice Eve being in the next movie. Have I missed something?

Nope. I wish we knew something about if Carol will return. I'm going to be a little miffed if with all the build-up and the "nice to be part of a family" if she just disappeared with little to no mention.

She's on maternity leave.

Yep. I thought that line was setting her up for the long term (or at least the next movie).

She's on maternity leave.

Hmm. The only thing that comes up on Google about it is a report on Mediamass about rumors spread by British tabloids that she's pregnant. The thing is, Mediamass is a satire and parody site.

Besides, if Carol Marcus had been written into the story and it turned out Eve wasn't available, they could go "Robin Curtis" with the role. ;)
