Some random thoughts on TNG

Was "Times Squared" originally meant as a tie in to the episode "Q Who?" I remember reading that somewhere that they had originally intended that but things changed along the way. I wonder how they might have tied in together. Loved that episode for some reason. Just whenever I watch it it's enjoyable to me.

"Evolution"
Another favourite of mine. I always wondered what became of the nanites as they evolved. They had gained speech and some kind of understanding by the end of that episode. They deposited them on that planet and left a beacon in orbit to warn people. But I wonder what that world would have been like to have gone back to in later years..

"Elementary Dear Data"
Another favourite. Data feels somewhat irked that he can't be challenged by any of the mystery adventures on the holodeck so asks the computer to create something to challenge him. I love that the ship's computer is so literal that it creates a living sentient program to not only challenge Data but almost beat him. Moriarty was one of my favourite TNG characters..

I find it very interesting that the computer can take a request so literally, and yet has the power to create a being like Moriarty. I say being because it's my belief that as he learnt he became a self sustaining sentient being even if he was a hologram. He had gone beyond that programming and was fighting for his very survival. Note that they never once considered just shutting the computer off or wiping him out via a system reset. Anyone with half a brain would have considered that as he was basically a computer program on the holodeck, and that's pretty much how I saw that the very first time I watched this. But I got by the end that he was more then that, that he was alive and sentient.

"Pen Pals"
A favourite of mine too because of the so much handwringing going on around the prime directive until Data puts the little girl on the speaker so everyone can hear her pleas for help. This actually made me fell a little anti Federation because of how stiff they were on "we can't help them" even if we hide our presence or wipe her memory. Bah humbug.

Their whole world was going to be destroyed so why did you even stop and go into orbit? You should have just kept travelling and let them all die.. Silly humans lol...

Sometimes TNG took the prime directive way too literally. The intent, IMHO, was simply to keep a people who didn't know other life existed, from finding out; and to not interfere with their society, tech, culture, and development. IMHO, if a planet is about to blow itself up and take the people with it, screw it - they HAVE no future. Save them if you can! If you can save them without revealing yourself, even better!

That doesn't sit well with me.

The vortex was suppose to be have been made by Q and somehow lead to where the Borg were as a continuing test for Picard/Humanity.

One timeline: The Enterprise explodes and Picard lives. The other, they discover the Borg.

Honestly this. Sometimes I feel somewhat "anti-prime directive" when they let millions or even civilizations die just for the sake of their principal.

This is exactly how I feel. Not to mention that the prime directive is a little arrogant. People on the show are always saying that we need to leave civilizations to their natural development and not interfere with their destiny as if we as humans are separate from nature or outside of fate.

Oooh, the fate comment is good! That hits the nail right on the head. If fate has put you in the exact time and place to be able to save a civilization, and you just sit and watch it die - well, fuck!
