There's really nothing to get up in arms about as far as I can see. It's not like they're saying Spider-man can't be non-Caucasian and/or non-heterosexual, just that *Peter Parker* isn't.

What threw me though was the "middle class" thing. I know we define such things somewhat differently over here, but May & Ben Parker always struck me as struggling working class types. Heads above water and all that, but never too far from the breadline.

Can working class types afford a house that big in New York City? (I've never lived there, so maybe my impression of the costs are exaggerated...)

Queens isn't in NYC proper. It's across the bridge and not Manhattan island.

Well, it is New York City. It's not New York County (i.e., Manhattan), but it's still New York. It is a bit more affordable, though.

I tend to think of them as lower-middle class. Maybe working class, there's a fine line there. Obviously, the need for money is an important plot point for the characters.

Everyone in America thinks they're middle class.

I fully admit all my knowledge of New York comes from movies so my perceptions are probably quite firmly divorced from reality, but I was always under the impression that Queens was something of a suburban overflow. Maybe not as rough as some inner-city areas, but the kind of neighbourhood that may have been nice and middle class once, but has gone down hill a bit.

As for the house; IIRC the way it's portrayed in the Rami movies and the old 90's cartoon is a pretty cramped two bedroom affair with no garden worth speaking of that looks like it was built in the 1920's. To me that says the Ben & May bought the place when they first married and never managed to move up in the world, probably working the same jobs until they retired (assuming Ben ever got to retirement age, I honestly don't remember.)

I suppose my question then is if that is middle class, what the hell constituents working class? A slum? Some roach infested apartment building? A caravan (read:trailer) park?

It's also worth keeping in mind that they do have Miles Morales now, so if they decided to go with a minority version of Spider-Man, they could just use Miles rather than changing Peter's race. As for keeping him heterosexual, that does kind of make a bit of sense since Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy being his love interests are almost as well known as his powers now.

Reportedly they are interested in a "Spider-Gwen" movie. Makes me wonder if she'll have some role to play in the new movie, or they'll go back to Mary Jane again.

I doubt she'll be played by Emma Stone though (Although if she was, it'd probably be explained as a clone or something instead of being from another universe), since Emma is dating Garfield and might not be happy about him getting pretty much fired, and also she's dealing with a bit of a backlash now too. Plus these new movies of course are set in MCU continuity and will probably totally ignore the events of the "Amazing" series (Although Sony is planning on developing a CG animated Spider-Man movie which may or may not pick up some threads from that) and start fresh, as we see with the new Spider-Man actor.

New York consists of Five Boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, and Staten Island. With the exception of Brooklyn, each has been considered part of New York proper for a very long time.

Queens doesn't have skyscrapers. It is less densely populated and more likely to have single family homes, but there's a mix (and it definitely has some poor neighborhoods, such as Jamaica). But cities are diverse and it definitely looks like a city. The important thing to remember is New York is more than Manhattan.

Haha, are some of these "terms" really necessary for them to nail down?

I bet that screenwriter who drafting the script where Spider-Man was a child abusing crack dealer must be kicking himself huh?

It sounds like the sex thing is connected with the whole Sins Past storyline.

In case some filmmaker wants to do a "gritty" or "realistic" film... since teens have sex, some guy might want to have Peter "get it on" once he has "spider strength", and make that as "proof" of going form nerd to hero.

Hopefully, they can get a filmmaker who "gets" Spiderman... like Sam Raimi did.

Are they allowed to have Spidey break the fourth wall?

"Wait a minute, I was a nerdy loser who never had a shot at any girl. Now I am a certified superhero with a billion dollar box office record, the coolest kid on the block and I still can't get laid because of that darn PG rating? Fu... F... Fuuuu... Man, you doofuses won't even let me curse? Come oooon!"

The Spider Man in the current cartoon breaks the fourth wall all the time. He was actually even part of the spider-verse event in the comics.

But for the rights issues, Deadpool could show up and say all of that for Mr. Parker.

    *Charlie Brown-style sigh*
