You have survived 10 years without the Prime Universe

And I have written silly fan-fiction featuring both the Prime Universe and NuTrek versions of characters for ten years (before I lost interest in writing altogether a few years ago).

The Prime Universe hasn't gone anywhere, nor is it likely to in the near future.

"It's really not dead.... as long as we remember it."

I agree on everyone's points about having so much Prime Universe material, both filmed and in print.

I can go back and watch TOS, TAS, TMP, and TWOK as often as I want to. ;)

And so what if the novels aren't "cannnon?" There is a lot of really fine material there. A good story is a good story, period.

As I said before, the novels have actually made Star Trek more enjoyable for me, not less. Being able to peer into the minds of the characters has given me a better idea of what life (for them) in the twenty third and twenty fourth centuries is really like and gives me something to hope for when I consider the problems affecting our society.

That ideas and concepts as amazing as those conceived and written about by Star Trek authors can be accepted by the people reading about them is enough to convince me that tomorrow (eventually) will be better than today.

So long as everyone's clear on the fact that future movies/tv shows/whatever can and will ignore the hell out of them, sure.

Unfortunately most Star Trek fans aren't sharp enough to grasp this concept. That's why the "cannnnon" issue, by necessity, keeps getting reiterated.

^I don't see what the big deal is either way. Star Trek is fiction, and as none of it is real, it doesn't make sense to quibble over whether a particular person, place or event is considered canon. Katherine Stano (a character from Vanguard and Seekers) is no more or less real than James T. Kirk, nor is she any less interesting because she lives in the pages of several novels as opposed to DVD or BluRay discs (in addition to novels).

The fact is, new productions are perfectly free to ignore old canon as well. Like how TNG, DS9, and Voyager all ignored what ST V established about the quick'n'easy travel time to the center of the galaxy. Or how Dallas retconned an entire season away as a dream. Or how movie sequels sometimes ignore previous sequels and present themselves as alternative followups to an earlier movie in the series. (Superman Returns ignored Superman III & IV and retconned the timing of the first two movies to push them forward about two decades. Every Highlander sequel pretty much disregarded the previous sequels. And so on.) Everything in fiction, canon or otherwise, is subject to being overwritten or ignored by new installments. Which is another reason the distinction between canon and not-canon is merely one of classification, not validity or worth. Canon does not guarantee consistency or "reality;" it only refers to the original or core creation as distinct from derivative works like tie-ins and fanfiction. It simply specifies the source of the work, not its permanence.

The only franchise I enjoy without continuity is James Bond. And even there I get great kicks out of references.

But for everything else, continuity is a big part of the enjoyment. Highlander, the later Superman sequels, etc... never did anything for me. I draw a huge amount of enjoyment out of the Marvel movies and Agents of Shield based on the continuity. Same for the Stargate shows.

You don't want Kirk to enter the turbolift with his gold uniform and leave it with his green tunic, you want continuity within one episode. And I also want continuity between episodes.

^^^^^^^^ This. Totally this.

and you're doing much better than you thought you would.

But am I doing as good as I would be?

Actually, I picked up a couple of the Eaglemoss miniatures recently, including the Romulan drone ship from the 4th season of "Enterprise" and watched the episode "United" so I could see it in action (and I may or may not have "flown" my miniature around a bit while the episode played ) and I was remind how much the show had really found its footing that season. We were slowly but surely moving towards the universe of Kirk's era. We were getting away from "new" enemies like the Suliban and the Xindi and moving towards familiar ones like the Romulans, and laying the foundation for both the future Romulan war and alliances that would evolve into the UFP.

That's what bothered me most about the ending of the "prime" universe. We'd seen tons of stories with the original and NG crew. The DS9 and Voyager crews' stories had been pretty much wrapped up, but "Enterprise" was left half-finished.

Would they actually SHOW a prolonged war with the Romulans? How would they make it look different than the Dominion war? Would Valdore (the main Romulan from the "drone" trilogy) have become a recurring badguy? How would they work in having Shran join the crew, as was planned? How would the Trip/T'Pol thing play out? Would Travis finally get something to do?

So much potential... so many questions... (sigh)

That's what the novels are for... ;) (Travis gets plenty to do in the book whose cover is my avatar as of this writing.)

Well, there's a lot in the novels I don't really care for like the Daedalus class actually being older than the NX class, or the convoluted Andorian names and genders.

I love the Andorian sexes concept. It takes an interesting looking race and adds something a little more to them, plus the added dimension of a race facing extinction due to the evolution of their method of procreation--it makes them an ultimately far more interesting species. I hope and pray that when we do get a new series this is made canon, that way rather than having a character who was hetero-, homo- or bi- sexual, we'd have one who was tri- (if not even quad-) sexual.

As for the Daedalus-Class, I still think that ENT should've been set on one such ship, as opposed to the proto-Akira.

While we're on the subject of non-canon, here's some forthcoming Prime-verse Trek which is even less canon than the novels (by which I mean at least the novels have the CBS stamp of approval, as opposed to this fan-made effort)
