According to Family, Grace Lee Whitney has passed away peacefully this past weekend May 1, 2015 in her Coarsegold home. She was born in Detroit Michigan April 1st 1930 where she was adopted by her loving parents Givah and Gordon Whitney. She is best known for her Star Trek character Yeoman Janice Rand of the U.S.S. Enterprise.
We've lost Nimoy and Whitney right before the 60th anniversary. This is getting sad. I hope we don't lose more.

The 1920s era cast members are just about all gone (about a decade ago now) and now 10 years later, it seems to be the 1930s whose time is up.
If you go by who got the original promotional work for the series, one might argue she was part of the original Big 3 for the Kirk-era series.

Yeah, when I first learned that she was older than both William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy I was quite surprised to say the least. She definitely did not look it, and remained radiant and beautiful to her last public images.
They are just under 11 months difference. So not a big gap. Shatner looks great as well for 84 plus. Though he seems to have finally slowed in terms of work the last year or two. He twitters like mad nowadays...
Nimoy looked good as well up until a year or two before his death.
And DeForest Kelley also retained that indomitable Southern-gentleman spirit and more less looked the same up until the end. It's hard to believe it's been almost 16 years since he passed away.
In my mind each of these wonderful people who pass on are finally getting their chance to explore "The Final Frontier" and travel to all of the ..."Undiscovered Countries" that we are too busy fighting amongst ourselves to pull ourselves together and explore.
That's right, there are all those publicity stills where she is featured as prominently as Shatner and Nimoy. They seem to have been taken after "Where No Man" but before "The Corbomite Maneuver."
That must have been a heady moment for her, very possibly thinking she was the third lead.
RIP Grace! You were simply the best and yes I always liked her legs even if The Captain tried not to notice them!

When she appeared at Brisbane's ConQuest in 1982, "Star Trek II" had just been released in Australia and Grace was feeling quite depressed at having been overlooked by the script. That Saturday night, I was fortunate to be invited to sit at the same banquet table. Grace bought champagne for the whole table, but sipped mineral water all night.
Several years later, she revealed in "Starlog" that the wonderful experiences and acceptance by fans at that Aussie con made her resolve to finally go teetotal - and her life changed for the better from that moment on. This photo was taken at the Customs gate, Sydney International Airport, by me, on the Tuesday after the con and is, essentially, Australia returning a now clean-living Grace to her home and a new life of sobriety.

I've always been a huge fan of Grace and Janice so it is very sad. I really missed her after she left the show. However, it was wonderful that she literally had the grace to return to Star Trek, turned her life around, and found a way to inspire others.

My Star Trek Barbie always reminded me of her. I believe she is in a better place now. RIP Ms. Whitney.
Janice was one of the few main Trek actors I've never met, but I think she'd only been over to the UK once or twice in recent years. I didn't know she was as old she was. As others have said here, I'd never have had her as older than Shatner.
This is a major blow so soon after losing Nimoy, and with the 50th next year.
