Arrow - Season 3

It's one thing to be a career killer -- evil, certainly, but impersonal. Ra's kills people because he doesn't care about them, because they're strangers and he sees it simply as doing a job. But Nyssa is his daughter. He's supposed to love and accept and take care of her. If anyone forced her into a marriage against her will, it would be awful, but for her own father to do it is just painful to watch.

....

But Nyssa's shown that she does have compassion and love in her, at least toward a selected sample of people. That's a partially redeeming feature, from a dramatic standpoint if nothing else. We're not a jury, we're television viewers, so whether we empathize with a fictional character matters more than what crimes they've committed. The fact that Ra's could be so uncaring toward his own daughter, so devoid of basic humanity, makes it effectively impossible to empathize with him or see him as a redeemable figure.

isn't Ra's issue really about Nyssa being in a same sex relationship...or rather because Sara does not believe in the League of Assassin's values...isn't the real problem he has is that Sara ditched the league in order to be a hero and help people...and do things like show mercy and kindness?
If that were all it was, Ra's wouldn't be forcing Nyssa to marry Oliver. And according to Malcolm in "The Magician" (granted, not an absolutely reliable source), Ra's considered Sara "the degenerate" who'd stolen his daughter's heart. "Degenerate" is a old code word for homosexuals.

"For her own father to do that..."

I suppose one could look at it (becoming the bride of the demon) as the only way Ra's could keep his daughter alive after she defied his will re: Ollie's ascension and to wipe away the betrayal of Nyssa's love for Sara.

But more likely Nyssa sees it as the final insult to her honor as a member of the League.

As a former lead warrior in her father's League of Assassins, she was willing to kneel there unflinching as the deathblow came, like Mateo offered to do when he admitted he let Oliver and company escape.

But to have that final warrior's honor be denied her, then to be treated like chattel delivered to the new demon for his "sport" was the true killing blow for any feeling she still had for her father.

The producers couldn't predict that this would be the same week as the Supreme Court arguments.

Actually, the case has been on the Court's schedule since January. So yes, they would have known in advance that oral arguments would probably have been going on about now.

Besides, it's been a major issue in society for the past few years, and has heated up particularly in the past few months with certain state legislatures trying to pass discriminatory laws. So the shows' emphasis on this issue in the current climate cannot be considered apolitical.

(Those are a pretty interesting read if you check out the reports on the full line of questioning from the judges on both sides of the argument--rather than just a CNN/FOX synopsis.)
:wtf: Why would I turn to either of those sources if I wanted news? ;)

That said, I am expecting Oliver to be playing a long game here--I don't believe he has been brainwashed.
I'd like to think that, but the fact that he straight-up murdered that guy he thought was Diggle kind of argues against it. I can't believe he'd be so ruthless as to kill a helpless person in cold blood just for the sake of a long con.

Also, nice to see the actual Canary Cry in action.
Except it's got to be confusing for viewers who don't watch The Flash. They'd be wondering how Laurel suddenly got this new ability. They could've included a line or two of exposition about it. Shared universes are fun, but it's always important to consider the viewers who don't watch the other shows.

Yeah, I don't think Ollie's pulling a long con either. Thought this was a pretty meh episode - mostly setup for the climax, and I was seriously confused by Ra's speech about the rival League at the beginning; I thought he was going to sic Ollie on him right away. When Ollie seems willing to execute Nyssa and Ra's says he's eliminated all his rivals, I guess he wasn't counting this Dark guy as a legitimate rival, whereas he had intended for Nyssa to be his heir at one point, but yeah, I was confused.

Good to see the Alpha-Omega virus coming back in the present, but the all-action flashbacks did indeed get tiresome here. On the other hand, I appreciated finally getting several Felicity/Thea scenes, with the former taking on a distinctly sisterly/sister-in-law tone in that last one.

My best guess is that Ray and Team Arrow manage to set things all right somehow; we'll see...

If so I hope they find a way to work Talia into the story. I was kind of hoping they'd add Law to the main cast next season. I'd love to see some kind of Nyssa/Talia feud.

The flashbacks have Rila Fukushima. So no.
THIS!

So, they're prepping Damian Darhk as the next season villain. Damian Darhk. As in "I'm the son of Bruce Wayne and Talia al Ghul"?
I'm guessing his lineage is going to be retconned...

Different bloke.

But they could be conflated.

But that would have to mean that Batman knocked up Talia 400 years ago, and before Ras became Ras.

(Moving along...)

Maxwell Lord?

I'm feeling generous.

Maybe we should give Gil Bellows another shot at it?

He was pretty good on Ascension. :)

Several questions:

Any chance they could dig up Sara and put her in the Lazarus pit? Does it only work on the injured/living and not the dead?

Why the different pronunciation of "Ra's?" Some pronounce it like it rhymes with "was" while others (including Ra's himself) seem to pronounce it "Raash" with a long A sound. You would think that by now they would have standardized the pronunciation, unless they deliberately wanted the differences.

So, how long before Felicity gets some type of super powers and maybe a skimpy leather outfit to go with them?

Rewatching the first season. I'm up to the episode where Arrow, or should I say the hood guy, ends up saving Malcom from Moira's hit.

It's fun to see how it all began again.

Kinda fitting doing it now with where Ollie is right now in the current storyline. :)

What I need now, is Thea, dressed as the Arrow, confronting Oliver, with an arrow pointing at him, saying....

"Oliver Queen, you have failed this city."

Then let loose the arrow....

That depends on the story. Usually it only works on the brink of death (in both directions -- it's toxic to someone in good health), but there have, I gather, been a few comics stories where it's been used to resurrect the long-dead.

This has been going on a long time. "Raysh" is the pronunciation that's always been used in DC animated productions, while all the live-action ones prior to this have used the "Rahzz" pronunciation. This is the first one to blend them, and it seems to have the Anglophone characters using "Rahzz" and the foreign characters (both League members and the Yamashiros) using "Raysh." So I guess the premise there is that "Raysh" is the correct pronunciation, but the American characters insist on pronouncing it like it's spelled.

Except I read an assertion recently that "Raysh" is actually the Hebrew pronunciation of the word, while "Rahzz" is closer to the Arabic pronunciation (though that would actually be more like "Rah-ss" with a rolled R and a glottal stop before the S).

She already has superpowers. She's a super-hacker (making her basically this universe's Oracle), and she apparently has the power to turn any guy who's romantically interested in her into a superhero.

Since it's been a while, here's some of the latest and greatest from the depraved denizens of The AV Club:

I enjoyed this one. As for Ollie being brainwashed, they did say that he was exposed to some kind of herb that helped the process along.
I doubt Ollie was playing the long game, he does seem to be honestly be brainwashed. I honestly think the storyline would have a lot more impact if he wasn't totally aware of what he was doing here, and then was eventually freed of the brainwashing and then had to deal with what he did as Al Sa'him.
I got a kick out seeing Nyssa learning to be a normal person.
I don't mind the flashbacks that much, although I will admit this season's has probably been my least favorite flashback story. At least now we are getting some ties into the present stuff now.
I loved seeing Thea in the hood with the bow and arrow. I've been waiting to see her join Team Arrow like that since Malcolm first started training her.

Based off of the preview for next week's preview, we're actually going to see Tatsu in the full comic book Katana costume. I was honestly doubting that we would ever see that on the series.

Interesting. And we just got a picture released of the Suicide Squad movie's cast, complete with Katana, who we didn't even know was in the movie.

Man, my colleague Mike Barr must be raking in the royalties (comparatively speaking), what with Katana appearing in Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Beware the Batman, Arrow, and Suicide Squad. At least, I hope he is, given that Katana isn't a "derivative character." DC Entertainment has its ways of avoiding paying creators for the use of their characters.

I'd be excited to see Katana in costume, but I've basically hated Arrow this season, so it feels like a waste. If she was in costume during a good storyline, this would be great. As it is, I at least now have one reason not to outright skip this week's Arrow. Its basically the only reason, but probably enough to justify watching it, since there isn't anything else on 8pm Wednesday anyway.
