Edith was someone who he spent time with when the Enterprise wasn't an option. It was also a very chaste relationship. If Kirk had remained trapped there then maybe but otherwise I agree that she isn't any more special than any of his other lovers.

Kirk usually falls hard and fast. I'm not sure we've ever seen his "true love". One person not mentioned yet is Rayna. Spock had to Vulcan whammy that woman out of Kirk's head.

Edith Keeler. The chemistry that Shatner had with Joan Collins is unmatched by any of his other TOS love interests.

Carol Marcus is a close second. She was intelligent and interesting enough that I can imagine her giving as good as she got. She & Kirk must've been something back in the day.

Not to mention that, the way Kirk viewed Ruth in Shore Leave, he would have mentioned her by name to Mitchell.

In my personal head canon, that blonde lab technician is Carol Marcus. Although, I'm not sure how well that works in with Kirk's timeline.
