Re: What Enterprise Do You Prefer? NuENterprise NCC 1701 or TOS NCC 17
For the record, the TOS Enterprise is a beautiful lady and we love her.

No one is asking you to agree with anything - people are just disagreeing with you that's all. I like the JJ movies but I certainly don't like all aspects of them. You won't catch me defending them to the hilt unless I feel strongly enough about the point.
I certainly haven't been 'unfair' with you, and whilst a few people have challenged you (me included) I don't believe anyone has been out of order with you. I agree you are free to post here - absolutely - I enjoy the debate. But if you feel it's 'not fair' you have to make some allowance for the board you are posting on. The chances are, however controversial the new movies are to some people, this board is where you will find NuTrek fans.
And you'd probably expect the average fan of New Trek to embrace quite a lot of change, as let's face it there's been a lot in terms of almost every aspect - budget, tone, pacing, visuals, characters, major changes - destruction of Vulcan etc.
If the only things you enjoy in the new movies are the effects and Urban's portrayal, you're going to come up against a lot of opposing views. Sometimes mine. And my biggest love is the TOS movies.
IMO best Star Trek movie ever is The Wrath of Khan. Its the best of the best in Star Trek and still hasn't been surpassed. It just worth it to see Ricardo as Khan again. Also the nebula cloud battle is still exciting to this day. Excellent movie.

I don't mind opposition. Actually I am planning on seeing STID again. Mostly for the effects but maybe some of it will stick this time and I will like it better. Who knows.

You know, I think the placement of the neck pylon relative to the nacelle pylons is something they finally got right, after all these years.TOS Enterprise for sure.
If the nacelles on the JJ version weren't so out of proportion by comparison to the rest of the ship (they could be the exact same design, just scaled down in size), the photon torpedo bays scaled up in size, and if at the neck were moved forward slightly (IE closer to proportions of the TMP refit), the JJprise would look better to me.
Since a large part of the mass of the ship is contained within the saucer section, it just seems to me to be more structurally sound to have the nacelle pylons and neck pylon more directly integrated with each other (with the engineering section mounted below and forward of that junction) rather than having saucer and nacelles hanging off opposite ends of a secondary hull subject to greater torsion as a consequence.
IMO, this is one instance where not looking just like the 1960s TV Enterprise or the 1979 refit is actually a plus.
At the TOS boards we don't all agree and have a rousing good time doing it. ... We are just more free to give our opinions there.

Unless it is a positive opinion about the Abrams films. Then you have quite a few posters that come after you like rabid dogs.
I agree its a opinion. If I would have said it about the abrams ship though I would have been in trouble here.
Yeah but these boards are often not fair. There is a reason I don't post on the numovies boards much anymore. I prefer the general trek boards or the tos boards.
If you feel there's something which has not been handled fairly in a forum, then there are appropriate ways to register that complaint (the most often-used being the Notify Moderator button or a PM to the forum moderators.)... I shouldn't have to agree with everything. Differing opinion make a thread interesting. At the TOS boards we don't all agree and have a rousing good time doing it. I am posting here less and less now and frequenting the other boards more. We are just more free to give our opinions there.
There is a lot of tribalism in star Trek fandom. i don't really understand why, and it seems to me there really shouldn't be any in light of star trek's message.
Which is that we can overcome our petty differences.
And really don't see how fans can not embrace that philosophy and trash each other for liking different shows than other people.
As a result of this post, I am now listening to Depeche Mode's People Are people.
That's why fans were frustrated with Brannon and Braga and the TNG movies.
They used the same villain and had a homage or two. The overall plots are different. Even Khan's motivations are different. It's more an alternate take on Space Seed. There is a lot of tribalism in star Trek fandom. i don't really understand why, and it seems to me there really shouldn't be any in light of star trek's message.

Were aren't resistant to change at all. STID was basically a TWOK copy in many ways. Something new would have been creating a whole new crew. Instead they copied the original. So that nothing new. I would have been up for something new in Star Trek. DS9 was so good because it was different and well written.

There are Trekkies who are resistant to change. The reactions to TMP,TNG. DS9 and ENT show this. I'm sure VOY had similar reactions, but not being a fan I never paid attention. Of course there are also complaints when there is too much of the same. You can't win.
There's more to being "new" than a new crew, ship or century. And there's no reason you can't do new things with the original characters.

To say nothing of Rick and Berman.
