Re: What Enterprise Do You Prefer? NuENterprise NCC 1701 or TOS NCC 17

The original was always incredibly stupid-looking. I prefer the TMP refit if I have to pick a Constitution class, but between these two, the XI-onward Enterprise, no contest.

How was the original stupid looking? The TMP refit was based on the look as well as Abrams Enterprise. They all have a similar shape. If you saw a actual life sized TOS enterprise sitting in a ship yard you would think it was dumb looking? I would definitely want to board the ship?

Short answer: execution matters (despite what an infamous poster who shall remain nameless would contest). Same shape, absolutely. But the Akira and the NX-01 have the same shape too and I love the former and have few good things to say about the latter.

I also want to note that thinking it doesn't look good and wanting to board it are not mutually exclusive! If I had the opportunity sure, that'd be novel.

Before Star Trek 2009, Trek had never featured imagery of the hero ships as dynamic, grand and visually plausible as either of these two reveals - and no, miniatures don't look as realistic as this, not even close:

"Oh, but CG just always looks fake." Whatevah.

CGI looks good when its executed correctly. I agree the NuTrek movies have excellent effects. My favorite is in STID when Marcus is attacking the entrerprise in warp, Sometime CGI does suck thought such as some of the effects Star Wars Ep 1 and 2s effect look CGI and EP 3s star destroyers look pixelated. I would say the empire strikes back had superior effects than the prequels because the star destroyers looked great compared to ep 3.

The Wrath of Khan also had some really nice special effects and look very realistic. ST The final frontier not so much.

^ Though in TWOK, the matting made the ships look translucent in a lot of shots (you could see planets and stuff behind them).

Not to derail the discussion, but I think CGI has a ways to go when depicting living creatures. I thought Dawn of the Planet of the Apes looked totally bogus.

Not all the shots were perfect in Twok I agree but the battle in the nebula was spectacular. The apes did look pretty crappy in Dawn.

The original was always incredibly stupid-looking.

Nice way to insult many, many people. Wouldn't suffice to just say that you don't like it?

There was no insult there, Bill. It's just an opinion. It's only an insult if people are insulted by others having a different opinion. I think the original is great, but I can see why others might think it looks silly.

Re: What Enterprise Do You Prefer? NuENterprise NCC 1701 or TOS NCC 17

The original was an elegant masterpiece; a prime example of the sleek, minimalist, modernist design aesthetic, just like lots of other things from that time period.

It was a thoughtful and considered design by Matt Jeffries, undoubtedly influenced by his years of real-world experience and work in the aviation field. He applied a practical modular design, as well as a smooth exterior surface, reasoning that the mechanical workings of the ship would be within the hull for ease of access, rather than having a bunch of cluttered garbage on the exterior of the ship as has become the standard in sci-fi since Star Wars.

I think the drydock scenes in The Motion Picture run it fairly close (bar a couple of the blue screen bits with Kirk and Scotty).

Those scene in ST09 are really superb though.

This. It looks the way it looks for an actual reason. Jefferies seemed to have thought out what was needed for a real world craft from a 60's perspective.

I agree its a opinion. If I would have said it about the abrams ship though I would have been in trouble here.

I think it's poor form to say it about anything.

I see plenty of people on here who would agree with you on criticising the JJPrise. You wouldn't have been in trouble. It's just how it's worded on a forum like this, that's all that matters really.

Aye. Disagreement makes threads vibrant, but the only people who really get called out about it (in either direction) are the ones who try to argue that their opinion is worth more than others, that they know what the "One, True" Trek really is.

If you enjoy something or not, go for it. If you're trying to do so at the expense of other people, then there's a problem .

It was impressive at the time, although less so than the ten year-earlier 2001.

I watched 2001 a few days ago, and to a point I agree - I thought they were somehow 'crisper' - like they were filmed in a higher definition somehow - some of the spaceship shots anyway. Some of the effects in TMP were blurry in parts - the rear torpedo shot from the Klingon cruiser for example looked like blurry arse. But I still find the drydock sequences still visually pleasing and decently realistic, not to mention grand.

Clearly ST09 beats it, how could it not, it was and still looks state of the art. but the aforementioned TMP scenes still stand head and shoulder above a huge chunk of the Trek Movie franchise that followed it, visually. Star Trek 2009 was the first time Trek had been as epic since 1979 IMO.

Yeah but these boards are often not fair. There is a reason I don't post on the numovies boards much anymore. I prefer the general trek boards or the tos boards.

Re: What Enterprise Do You Prefer? NuENterprise NCC 1701 or TOS NCC 17

But if you are not a Nutrek fan and you are frequenting a NuTrek board - what do you expect?

If you went on the TOS forum not being a fan of that you'd expect a lot of differing opinions to your own wouldn't you?

I've praised the special effects and Karl Urbans performance. I shouldn't have to agree with everything. Differing opinion make a thread interesting. At the TOS boards we don't all agree and have a rousing good time doing it. I am posting here less and less now and frequenting the other boards more. We are just more free to give our opinions there.

Re: What Enterprise Do You Prefer? NuENterprise NCC 1701 or TOS NCC 17

No one is asking you to agree with anything - people are just disagreeing with you that's all. I like the JJ movies but I certainly don't like all aspects of them. You won't catch me defending them to the hilt unless I feel strongly enough about the point.

I certainly haven't been 'unfair' with you, and whilst a few people have challenged you (me included) I don't believe anyone has been out of order with you. I agree you are free to post here - absolutely - I enjoy the debate. But if you feel it's 'not fair' you have to make some allowance for the board you are posting on. The chances are, however controversial the new movies are to some people, this board is where you will find NuTrek fans.
