For Rommie in AndromedaI could see a ships AI like Rommie in Andromeda, but then ST would be accused of ripping off Andromeda....
in terms of AI as a principle character but not as avataron the two-dimensional monitors; as a three-dimensional holographic projection; and as the avatar Rommie (all three played by Lexa Doig).
as well as videogames during cinematics will make viewers unhappy as well has the cost involved for the producers would limit the character's screen time and thus the character's ability to really develop on a Trek TV series. The 2011 film Mars Needs Moms was widely criticized for being creepy and unnatural because of its style of animation. The film was the second biggest box office bomb in history

Non-humanoid digital AI. It's the one direction we haven't really featured greatly in Star Trek. If the shtick is that they keep expanding or advancing their AI, in androids, machines, & holograms, then perhaps there will be a time when the ship itself is an intelligent creature. That's gotta be worth some thought
This last theme-the desire to understand humanity-is likely played out.No artificial character please it has been done, twice over. Data was awesome, but any homage to him would just be a lesser ripp-off (see the EMH)

ANd please, if we get an AI character, please don't give him/her/it an desire to understand humanity/become more human.
Yahoo had a show called Other Space with an AI character. She was basically in charge of the ship's functions and could interact with the crew through computer screens. It was a comedy so she was revealed to be a re-purposed AI from a Hooters casino ship, was involved in one robot uprising and fell in love with a weirder member of the crew.Non-humanoid digital AI. It's worth a stab, I think. With stuff like Ciri and Cortana (the app, not the Halo character, lol), there's certainly been a push to anthropomorphisize the technology we use to make it more personable, appealing, and intuitive. Even if it wasn't a main regular "character", it'd be kind of neat for the ship to have some measure of personality, to reflect what the future might be.
Maybe it'd be interesting for that personality to be merely a simulacrum and for the AI to have a different type of (IE non-human-ish) intelligence. Maybe it's actually a collective of 1200 smaller intelligences working in unison, for instance?
Actually, I have come across speculation that AI may well turn out to have a nonhuman character. That is, you wouldn't get a human mind in your AI, but a sort of intelligence that is better at certain things than humans, but would have certain limitations compared to humans. It wouldn't even necessarily need to be self aware.Maybe it'd be interesting for that personality to be merely a simulacrum and for the AI to have a different type of (IE non-human-ish) intelligence. I was thinking about an old thread I started
Emergency Medical Hologram in future Trek ?
and what others may want in the next Trek series main characters.
In TNG we had "Data" who was a Soong-type android, the first and only such being to ever enter Starfleet.
In VOY we had a Emergency Medical Hologram EMH "The Doctor"
In ENT we did not have an principle castmember artificial intelligence being character but only the Humanoid Figure as a recurring character.
What type of AI character (if any) would you want in the next Trek TV series as a principle character?

It was never about having an AI character, it was about having a non-human/outsider. It's a pretty standard sci-fi trope, and we've seen it done in every iteration of television Trek. Yes, in TNG and Voyager it was an AI, but it in TOS it was Spock, in DS9 it was Odo and in ENT in T'Paul.
