Obscure trivia.

I thought of a fairly obscure bit of trivia.

When (in episode production order), was the LAST time and two crew members spoke to each other where NEITHER of them was one of the main cast--Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scott, Sulu, Uhura, Chekov, Chapel.

in other words--when was the last time a crewman spoke to another crewman----just crewperson "Smith" and crewperson "Jones" ??

I kind of still wasn't clear enough--I mean an EXCHANGE of dialogue.

No one actor saying "Check that" to a non-speaking extra. SORRY.

I was thinking and meaning an exchange but I wasn't clear.

If only one man/woman needs to speak, David L. Ross's security officer was screaming ''SECURITY GUARD!!!!'' as he was being Spock-pinched. You can't know your partner's name if he doesn't have one. The partner was of-camera. The episode was TURNABOUT INTRUDER.

But if nameless guards don't count, off the top of my head the only two named characters that come to mind are Charlene Masters and her whutsiname assistant from THE ALTERNATIVE FACTOR. That's a first year adventure, so it's probably far from the last three or four times such an occurrence happened.

Great catch. Had forgotten that one.

So for now it's episode 20--late first season.

Got to say I'm having a darn hard time finding one after season 1

Did Kirk and Spock's henchmen speak to one another in Mirror, Mirror, or were they one person to another comments?

With the larger landing parties than usual in Season One, and more equitability before KirkSpock&McCoy monopolized most major scenes, you'd probably find more occasions in the first year.

You even had McCoy beam down with DeSalle and Jaeger and nobody else in GOTHOS. Redshirts lasted longer than yellowshirts during those days.

IMDB tells me David L. Ross once again plays the resurrected Lt. Galloway (or his twin brother) in TURNABOUT, but I don't believe his name is mentioned by Spock or the others in this episode.

The myth that Ross is Galloway in Turnabout comes from the end credits.

Nobody calls him Galloway in the episode. Somebody drawing up the end credits forgetting that Galloway is dead and Ross returning as "Johnson" in Day of the Dove shouldn't over-ride common sense.

He plays Johnson in Turnabout.
That's the reasoning that's used by people who track the minor characters.

If an actor dies as one character and then comes back as a named different character in a later episode--he is logically playing the new named character-NOT the dead person he played before.

Exception is Leslie, who dies as Leslie and then is called Leslie again in later episodes.

But I'd give McCoy a better shot at finding a cure for Leslie's blood problem than putting Galloway back together!

Kirk's guard only spoke to Kirk--Spock's guard didn't speak at all.

Looks like there aren't too many examples AFTER the second season sooooo

here are a few from the first season.....

The two guys Charlie observed making plans to meet in the rec room.

Tomlinson and Angela talking about their wedding

Latimer and Gaetano on patrol

Riley and "Larry Matson" speaking over the intercom.

The two security guards talking about Janice in Man-Trap(?)

The "phaser crew" shouting out the phaser readiness in "Balance.."

Angela and Esteban flirting in Shore Leave

Kelso, Mitchell and Dehner talking in WNMHGB

Technician Fisher and Scotty's transporter assistant had an exchange in Scotty's presence in Enemy Within--I think that counts.

There was a filmed and cut scene in Space Seed where McGivers speaks to Angela (wow, this would have made 3 times Angela spoke to another crewperson besides the regulars--clearly that would have been a record.)

I like both of their....characters. Is this scene on the remastered DVD? I'm aware of extra scenes for WHERE NO MAN HAS GONE BEFORE, but not for other episodes.

No the scene in question from Space Seed is presumed lost--like the other 99% of cut material from TOS.

This link has a section on cut material from TOS including still and a couple of video clips !!!

Wow...I never realized how rarely this happens. Interesting. Presumably it happens far more frequently if you expand it to any character.

This reminds me of the Bechdel Test. How many scenes are there of two women talking about something other than men?

If he is Lieutenant Galloway then Turnabout must be before Omega Glory! But on the other hand David L.Ross was ginger in Day of The Dove as Johnson but back to his normal colouring as Galloway in Turnabout! did James Blish write him as Galloway or Johnson in the book? It's been many years since I read them!

The deleted Space Seed scene was the first one documented here (link), but with BAKER being replaced by ANGELA. That the character was renamed and the scene filmed is supported by the Cast Sheet from the Justman files...

Providing they're still live, I wonder if they'd be happy their social security numbers were just displayed on the internet.

Maybe that image should be removed?

:)

...And that has never been much of a problem, since "Omega Glory" is free of stardates, internal references to preceding events, season-specific costumes or props, or other means of dating the story. Save, of course, for the fact that Galloway dies there, which would put the adventure after the last one where he's seen alive.

We might raise an eyebrow at Spock's ability to influence weak minds from a distance, in theory an "early" feature that later eroded away from the character. But deciding that this happens very late in the show, rather than early on, is the less conflicting way to go, as the other heroes then have less time to (fail to) comment on that ability, or (fail to) make use of it. :vulcan:

Should it follow that every appearance of the character with that face, including the nameless ones, ought to be interpreted as "Lieutenant Galloway"? Well, why not...

In Blish's adaptation of "Day of the Dove", the character is indeed called "Galloway". However, in Blish's previous adaption of "The Omega Glory", the guard who died in that story was not Galloway but "Raintree" (the name that was in the script before David L. Ross was slated for the role).

No, actually Kirk's guards did talk to each other in Mirror Mirror. From the transcript:

(Suddenly, one of Chekov's men turns against him, taking his weapon and shooting another. Kirk throws his final assailant and he gets zapped into molecules too. The turbolift opens and two armed men come out.)
MAN: Your men, Captain. Easy, Farrell. I did your job. Ask the captain.
FARRELL: Sir?
KIRK: Yes, he did your job.
FARRELL: Smart boy, switching to the top dog.
KIRK: Get him out of here. [/FONT]

I remember that Farrell was looking straight at unnamed guy (who knew his name), so he wasn't just talking to the air in general, either.

That's a great catch, but in fairness I was responding to whether Spock's bodyguard spoke to Kirk's bodyguard. The guy in that exchange was Chekov's henchman.

At any rate, great find and most likely the last exchange between crewmen on the enterprise of the series!

:) Then half the credit goes to Green Shirt, because I wouldn't even have thought to look in this episode first without his post--I'd have worked my way backwards from the third season, leaving out ones I know can't fit. I'm frankly still amazed that this IS the last example of that! What about the two science station guys on tape in The Empath? They weren't Enterprise crew, but I'm betting they were Starfleet. But I guess by definition no joy there. This is so weird. Great question, you turned up something truly odd compared to most trivia questions, whatever the reasons for it.

But--does MU Enterprise count as the Enterprise?

Yes he does deserve credit! And I'm going to say MU DOES count since they are crewmembers of Enterprise.

No to Linke and Ozaba--not crew members.

By the way, the guy who played Linke is the oldest living TOS actor---- Jason Wingreen age 94

You can count TOS movies, Star Trek VI has a conversation between the assassins Burke and Samno in the transporter room where they say racist things about Klingons -- "you know only top of the line models can even talk," etc.
