I just admired the way you described the feeling, I thought it was especially artistic. Absolutely no reflection on sexual preference, reason for it, or anything related - I just thought it was a well-written sentiment.
For example, my room mate is currently writing a novel that includes a Vietnam war vet. She isn't a Vietnam war vet, but she would like to include the character in the story and be accurate in describing his emotions, and write him as a relateable character. So, she did research about the topic, the feelings surrounding it, interviewed a couple people that had served in that war, etc. We will see whether she succeeded or not when the novel gets published. There's nothing wrong with being interested in personal experiences and emotions that you do not or can not share in order to write more believable characters.
And really it makes you a better person. You can empathize if you at least understand, and for some experiences you have to really work at it to understand like the one you mention. Sometimes people close themselves off so they can't empathize or relate unless they've been through the same thing, really we are broader than that.
I certainly don't think it makes you worse for trying. To relate this back to Voyager, this reminds me of Seven's deal....she's forced to empathize with a lot of life experiences she hasn't actually gone through, and shuts them out once she becomes an 'individual' again. Makes me wonder if it's a metaphor for something I can't quite put into words at 1am.

Final revision stage, but the manuscript's already been accepted. It's her second book. And I am impressed too, she is an inspiration to me when it comes to my own writing, just by seeing how hard she works on it, although part of me wishes she'd spend a little more time at a 'real' job so I could sleep later. She is a VERY loud typer and her office is like 5 feet from my head on the other side of the wall. Sorry for the digression, teacake, various Janeways, et al.
