Axanar anthology

After this, what on God's green earth with compel anyone to ever spend money on a Star Trek novel again?

If they want to mass-distribute them for commercial purposes, probably plenty, since Star Trek novels aren't written as fundraising perks for fan films.

Nice to see you are able to keep your trolling fangs . . .

 Physician, heal thyself.

I imagine at some point, someone will push it a little too far and CBS will come down on everyone in the fan film industry... hard.

Yes, I notice there is plenty of "imagining" about that. But given that by far the most high-profile thing the Axanar team has done so far (the Prelude film) didn't bring CBS legal down on them, it's a wee bit premature to be theorizing about how they're going to destroy all fan films ever with their latest fundraising perk (or Kickstarter, or whatever).

After this, what on God's green earth with compel anyone to ever spend money on a Star Trek novel again? The writers are writing them for free now!
Actually, it's my understanding that the authors hired to write supplemental materials for Axanar are all being paid professional rates for their work, just as the SAG actors appearing in the production are. I've also heard rumors that Alec Peters has been completely above-board with the folks at CBS Television Licensing, and is doing all he can to not provoke a legal response. So let's all cool it with the predictions of legal apocalypse, please.

Which is why I mentioned 'someone'. :techman:

Thanks for this information.

Well, it's good that the actors and writers are being compensated for their work. I've long suspected the actors would certainly be paid for their work; I'm glad the writers will be getting paid to write this fan fiction as well.

Of course he is.

I know better than to take you on and have even defended you in the past when you've stirred up the ire on this message board. That said, I do reserve my right to maintain a healthy dose of skepticism about this project, and every new thing I hear about it just furthers my curiosity and suspicion.

I don't do Facebook. How do I get a copy ?

Just checked and from what Peters says on the FB thread, it looks like they plan to do it as a separate project after the film (not as a "fundraising perk" as I previously thought but presumably still non-profit like the rest of Axanar). So, not for quite a while yet.

I am absolutely amazed that somehow this is being permitted to go forward, legally.

Well, you're forgetting that the situation has become so bleak that it's now up to a fan film to bring back the Prime Universe. Hardly seems fair to said fan film to place such colossal expectations upon it, but that's how low the mighty have fallen around here.

So, we will defend said fan film with our very lives until such time as said fan film fails to bring back the Prime Universe.

I fail to see how that explanation applies to the novels, where the Prime Universe is alive and well and continues with each new publication.

Heh. If CBS were really waiting in the wings to drop the hammer, this would surely not stop them. (Besides, Axanar is at least partly based on content from a defunct Star Trek RPG, it hardly qualifies more as being "Prime Universe" -- whatever that really means -- than the official NuTrek universe.)

^Right. I gather that all this SFU stuff may look like original-recipe TOS in terms of its designs, but it diverged from the continuity of the Prime Universe decades ago.

But, hey, it's something else Axanar-related that people can profess to be darkly suspicious about for a while, God knows the TATV kickstarter wasn't cutting it. :techman: The even better news is that they're apparently planning new fundraising perks on a monthly basis, including shotglasses; so not only can we look forward to the "where are the lawyers?!" ritual every month, but we can make a drinking game of it! Won't that be fun? I know I'm excited.

This has earned you a trolling infraction - stop deliberately trying to wind people up.

Nice to see you are able to keep your trolling fangs so perfectly sharpened. Stay classy!

Accusing people of trolling is against the rules - please don't do it. This has earned you an infraction.

Comments about the infractions to PM please.

General request and warning to the all participants of this thread - let's keep this on the subject of the books please. The politics of fan productions do not belong on this forum.
