Shatner / Nimoy still a possibility?

At least if Connery was playing that old guy in Skyfall there would be a reason for that character to exist. He's just kinda there, shows up out of nowhere and could easily have been written out, it's really odd.

Let's hope not; both men have done their bit, and need to let the new incarnations of the characters they played stand on their own merits.

Yes. Nimoy was a nice linking device for the reboot, but to keep having these guys in the new movies is an appeal to sentiment at the expense of the story. The next movie has to be a Star Trek story, not a cabaret featuring William Shatner.

I don't think anyone is advocating that the new movie turn into the Shatner-Nimoy reunion special.

I'd be happy with a meaningful cameo.

A lot of people were not pleased with Nimoy's cameo in STID and, while I understand he wasn't given anything deep as in ST09, it was still a treat to see him as Spock.

Truthfully, when I left the theater after ST09, I loved the movie but I was also slightly sad that we may not see Nimoy-Spock again, but we did. And I was pleased.

I would prefer they DON'T try to shoehorn any of the original cast in. I just can't see any way to not make it cringey or gratuitous. I'd prefer a movie solely about the reboot cast.

HOWEVER... I would very much welcome Shatner, Nimoy's, Stewart's, and anyone else's participation in some other Trek events for the 50th. Whether it's documentaries, nostalgic looking-back talking heads, or some TV 'episode'...

if none of those come about (and who knows with CBS!?) then I'd be a bit more receptive to them appearing in the movie.

Bottom line - I sincerely hope the movie isn't the ONLY hoopla we get. Trek deserves more.

Star Trek 2009 would be the right time to appear Shatner and Nimoy together as Kirk and Spock. It does not make sense now.

I could go either way on it. If they're in it, grand! Like others here have said, I, too, hope that it's not just some gimmick of stunt-casting and that their involvement is meaningful to the plot. Shatner has a history of saying "no cameos" for just that reason, and Nimoy turned down Generations out of a similar philosophy, and he was right. Spock's minor role was fully satisfied by Chekov and/or Scotty's presence and didn't detract from the overall plot.

If they couldn't come to an agreement and they're not in it, oh well. I still hope we get a good script.

My head's still spinning from Pegg being announced as writer. I certainly like him as an actor and I've seen some of the other things he's written & directed; I guess I'm still on the fence if he can write Trek. At least he's familiar with the process - I will reserve judgment until others begin to vilify leaked information from the set! :D

Please, Mr. Pegg, listen what Urban said: "What I really believe we should do now is strive for originality. Because in Star Trek Into Darkness we took one of the most revered and loved adversaries of the Enterprise and put him in there, and did a story that had all of these wonderful nods to films from the past, and episodes from the past. I really think that what we should do from here, in my personal opinion, is strive to be original. Strive to be something different and new. You know, let's not forget that Star Trek as envisioned was about space exploration. And it would be really wonderful to harness the spirit of that and apply it to the next film, so that we do something different than a revenge-based picture." :techman:

The reason why some where not pleased with nimoy appearance was because it was not necessary. in fact that little screen time they gave to nimoy could have gone to bones.

Nimoy was excellent in trek 09 and he passed the touch to the new cast with style and grace to keep having him back will just make everything kind of corny

Oh, I totally get it.

Believe me, I understand the logic of that point of view, but I guess I'm looking at it through different lenses:

Nimoy is in his 80s, I'll take whatever amount of Nimoy-Spock I can get...even if it's indulgent.

So as far as I'm concerned, be damned with logic, scripts, Academy Awards or whatever you want to throw at me...if Shatner and Nimoy play Kirk and Spock, I'll forgive ANYTHING you put it front of me.

Want to make them the stars? Great. Want to give them supporting roles? Bring it on. Want to give them meaningful cameos? Awesome. Want to have them read phone books? I'll take it!

Whatever they want to do.

Including another Star Trek V.

But don't get me wrong...obviously, I prefer a kickass script. :)

I think they need to work in all of the TOS cast since it is the 50th. All of them had good contributions to stories and Trek in general. It would be awesome if they would work in a little from Star Trek The Return book as a background but since it is an alternate new timeline anything is possible.

The above scenario might make me skip a screened version of Trek (cinema or TV) for the first time ever. Yikes!!!

I'd have no problem with seeing the TOS cast making appearances.

Like I said, now is the time.

Basically I agree with this guy!

While his appearance wasn't necessary, it could have been done a lot better and more poignant. When he shows up on the view screen and nu-Spock asks him what happened when he dealt with Kahn, all that original Spock had to say was, "I died". That's it. Just with that little bit of info could have helped with the motivations of Spock through the rest of the film. Why he was so upset when Kirk "died", because it should have been him.

I thought Nimoy in Into Darkness was absolutely necessary, it upped the stakes by revealing Khan's nature while Kirk was on the other ship with him. I suppose there's other ways to do it, but this was a powerful one.

Plus, there were so many people who expected Kirk or Spock to go to PrimeSpock for his future knowledge in the second movie, it would've been called a plot hole by many, if it hadn't been addressed

My thoughts.

I do like the idea of having the alternate reality versions of Kirk and Spock at the end of the film, showing them many years later, portrayed by William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy.

However, they will have to have Shatner wear blue contact lenses, to keep continuity accurate for the alternate reality.

Nah. First time Nu!Kirk tried the Retinax eye medicine that his prime counterpart was allergic to, one of the reactions was spontaneous eye color change.

That part can be left for the novelization, though.
