Axanar anthology

Not licensed Trek lit, but possibly of interest. Spotted this on the "Axanar Fan Group" on Facebook, based on the Axanar fan film...

I cannot tell you all how excited I am to present to you a project that you will all love. Axanar: The Four Years War Anthology. A collection of 6 short stories, one on each character in Prelude to Axanar written by current Star Trek authors and NY Times best selling Sci Fi authors. The stories will be set during the time of the war and help inform each character who you will see in Axanar. The book will be a limited edition hard cover, slip cased edition. Stay tuned for details.
Any "current Trek authors" here involved?

How would they distribute the book? They can't sell it because they require a license for that. And why make a hard-copy instead of going for a digital release?

Sorry if my words sound acidic, it is really just curiosity. Their ship designs are cool.

I imagine the usual workaround fan films use to distribute DVDs and the like - donate $XX and get them as a "free gift"

This sounds like a serious reach. I'm surprised the Pocket legal department doesn't have something to say about it.

The only way I can see them pulling this off is if the stories are about original characters created specifically for the Axanar project. But any mention of canon characters and institutions would seem a copyright violation.

I would expect it would be CBS Studios' legal department, not Simon & Schuster, who would need to take an interest.

Aren't they selling model kits, too?

Between all the merchandising and the fundraising, I'm shocked that the CBS legal department hasn't intervened at this point.

I think CBS spotty enforcement of their copyright on some of this stuff doesn't bode well for there being a new TV series. If they were planning on coming back to TV, you'd think they'd shut these things down.

Good point. I'm more interested in this kind of stuff, and Treklit, continuing than in a new tv series though, so I'm good with that.

Yeah, I agree with Ryan. I'd gladly stick with Treklit above a new series at this point, the way it's been going.

This sort of thing is common in the Doctor Who world. This week, the charity War Doctor anthology Seasons of War should be released.

To be honest, I wondered when someone would do a charity Star Trek anthology.

^I want both.

Problem is that Treklit has to bend to the show. What if a new series had a big plotline about the Borg post-2381? :p

(Just to pre-clarify, I'm not talking about the "my old stories don't count" thing that a lot of fans complain about; I'm talking about events in a theoretical series almost definitely interrupting the evolving Treklit universe and forcing it to be stopped and rebooted to match new aired canon without any sense of closure on the previous universe. I'm sure it'll happen someday, but I'd rather that day be far, far in the future.)

^I'm not so sure it'll happen. I think the future for screen Trek is likely to be either more Abramsverse or other, newer reboot continuities. I suppose it's not impossible that the classic continuity might be revived, but now that the precedent for a continuity reboot has been established, I expect there will be more.

I agree with Christopher. I imagine the current Treklit line will continue for many years. Eventual most people will loose interest and the line will be cut to a few books a year, and someday a grand finale novel will wrap up all the 24th century storylines in one grand Star Trek: The End event. All this will take many decades.

I think we will eventually get a jump forward to the 25th century or beyond, which could easily serve as a sequel to either continuity. It could be that the only difference further down the line is if Vulcan or Romulus still exists...
