But Lin also directed Community. Does that mean Star Trek will be quirky half hour sitcom? Or maybe its going to be a crime drama, since Lin directed two episodes of True Detective!

relentlessly stupid like most of Trek has been since the late 90s
So Fast and Furious is in your eyes not a braindead action movie? Seriously?
Who is that American Graffiti fucker to think he can write and direct a science fiction movie, anyway? Lucas will just turn the whole genre into young California types racing spaceships around the galaxy.![]()

More "braindead" than the post-TMP Star Trek movies?
Not a bit.
The Trek movies have all been attempted-action movies with an emphasis on the characters and themes of friendship, etc. that are very similar to the F&F movies; certainly no more sophisticated. This is one reason that Lin might be a good fit.
I never called any Trek movie "remarkably smart". Not that I appreciate "smart" movies, I like movies with good themes. Or to say it with Kurosawa: "A truly good movie is interesting and easy to understand. There’s nothing complicated about it."[Loving the movies is one thing and entirely a matter of personal taste; insisting that they're remarkably smart is another.

I like Fast 5, and thought it had some very interesting character moments, that rely more on the emotional connection to the characters that most give it credit for.
Regardless, a read of Lin's IMDB page indicate that he is note a one trick pony, and should not be judged purely on one franchise.

Oh, yeah.
I mean, the studio didn't even take Lucas seriously. They allowed Star Wars to continue because it was a fun kid's movie that would probably make a little bit of money. They actually were counting on Damnation Alley to be the big hit that year. When it got delayed due to effects work, SW got its chance.
But, it wasn't taken completely seriously by everyone, especially a lot of the British crews.
Right. As someone else pointed out, nobody expected TMP to be a musical in space, even though Robert Wise did West Side Story and the Sound of Music.
also, while it was being made, weren't several of the actors, as well as Lucas afraid it was going to be a major bomb and a fiasco? It's hard to go back thirty some years, I know, but the thing about Star Wars is that it didn't resemble any other movies that 20th (or most anyone) was making at the time it was green-lighted. No one knew what the potential audience for it was; no one understood what the visual impact of the finished film would be; no one had any clear idea how to market it.
At least they are consistent about the braindead action movie thingy.
