Do you think Jennifer was really dead?

I'd like to think if Jennifer had been alive but there was no chance of saving her and Sisko had refused to leave that the Bolian would have knocked him out and dragged him to the escape pod.

No knocking him out, but in the end Sisko did refuse to leave his dead wife and the Bolian physically dragged him away, with Sisko kicking and screaming the whole time.

There didn't really seem to be time for a discussion on the matter.

Agreed and that's why a lie was the quickest and less violent way to get the hell out of there. You don't want an erratic raving Sisko knocking everything out of the way and writhing on the floor as we've seen, in Far Beyond The Stars. Yeah, I know that it wasn't really Sisko but I could really imagine him behaving like that.

It was a jokey "sir," not a literal "sir" ... sir! And no, they did not Knight the good Captain. As for Marie Antoinette, her final words were "pardon, I didn't mean to do that." Or words to that effect, because she'd just stepped on somebody's foot. Even as she was about to be executed, she conducted herself with decorum.
Back on subject:
Yes, it would be interesting, dramatically, had the other officer lied about Jen's actual condition to $ave Sisko, but it would've had to have been followed up, if they actually did that. Otherwise, really, it's just novel stuff and with the rare few STAR TREK novels I've sampled, I hate when the author puts their own spin on actual events in the franchise. I eventually winged one book in the trash, just for that reason ...

Picard blows a lot of smoke about humans being beyond money, greed, or religion, too.
Sir.........................

You mean they Knighted Picard, as well? I wonder how they did that since there hasn't been any knighting in France since the French have decapitated their last absolute monarch, circa 1790, if memory serves.

There are knights in the Legion of Honor under Napoleon and all later regimes up to the present day.

Indeed she did. And so did Louis XVI.

Madame Du Barry, on the other hand, was very afraid, begged the crowd to rescue her and her last words were "I beg you for one moment more, Monsieur Executioner; just one, little moment!"

Agree with that. I can understand why the author would want to do that, but it does seem a bit revisionist. Can make the novel seem a bit fan-fic-like

In my view, she was dead. Despite the fact that the tactical officer was the only one to see the readings, if she had been alive, he and Sisko would have had a reasonable chance to get her out. Combine that with the fact that other officers were assisting in the evacuation, like the one who carried Jake to the escape pod.

If we go with the theory that she still had some revivable life readings, it's extremely unlikely that they could have resuscitated her without a proper sickbay. Certainly not on a small escape pod.

I had never thought of this before... it's certainly possible, although aren't we forgetting that the wormhole aliens did have a plan....

But no one ever calls them "sir" followed by their first name. This is just a medal.

... Sacré bleu!
I've heard it said, (or perhaps it's a myth?) that because the beheading happens so rapidly, the head is still quite alive when it rolls into the basket, for a couple seconds. That poor woman ...

That's always been my take on it: STAR TREK novels are just Fan Fiction that you have to pay for, really ... :vulcan:

I think they changed the aliens throughout the series, at first they seemed clueless, unable to understand the concept of time and they even sounded a bit naive. Then progressively they became these all powerful all knowing beings that had everything planned in advance.

In fact even Sisko's prophet mother changed a lot between the first time he spoke to her and their last encounter on the show.
