Star Trek has grown over the decades and through the various versions of television shows and movies.
J.J. Abrams initial Star Trek movie was touted as a "reboot." And in many ways it was. Also in many ways it was not. And in some ways it gave reckless disregards to such things as warp factors, and the proximity of Delta Vega to Vulcan (close enough to see in the Delta Vegan sky the planet Vulcan AND its collapsing into a black hole... not to mention how the black hole that swallowed up Romulus could threaten to destroy the entire galaxy.
It is not as though there have not been major goofs in any version of Star Trek you want to cite. Surprisingly, the least liked (ST ENT) had the fewest boo boos (and nearly none if you consider the altered timeline from the incursion of BORG and ENTERPRISE E... ST VII).
ST VII, Praxis explostion affecting EXCELSIOR beyond Klingon space... who was transiting the quadrant at full impulse (sublight speed).
ST TOS and its 200 then 300 year future history and the extent humanity was able to travel out to before warp drive was invented in so short a period of time.
Point is, there are a lot of goofs and it is unrealistic for the hard core Trekke (tre kay') to fault any version of Star Trek for not adhering to a precised canon (which is debatable at best).
The BORG do not have a leader, the BORG has a queen... First Contact (ST TNG Q Who) mentioned nothing of assimilation but rather a nursery of baby borgs. The original Borg cared nothing about assimilating races but rather in destroying them and absorbing their technology.
Again, there is no airtight Star Trek canon.
And altered timelines fill every version of Star Trek.
Now with that said, onto the point of this thread in the next post.

The newness of Star Trek (TOS) and the gadgetry and the premise of humanity exploring space, expanding out into the unknown became lost in time... even with TOS.
What began as years of distance between the ENTERPRISE and home or the nearest starbase became less than a old earth style cruise (navy or luxury). By TNG the galaxy was little more than a cab ride to anywhere.
VOY recaptured this element to a degree being in the Delta Quadrant.
But IMHO its time to introduce some of that mega-super-trans-warp technologies the various versions of ST encountered to expand the theater of the missions and campaigns to at least this corner of the universe.
By now the new ST 2016 will have been scripted, and no new ideas considered... if normal Hollywood procedures are followed. Of course the normal Hollywood procedure canceled ST TOS in its 2nd season, didn't they? Never to be heard from again... if the normal Hollywood procedure had been followed. But fans did a write-in campaign and got the 3rd season filmed and aired. This also had an effect on ST TOS getting syndicated (repeats that have aired millions of times over the last 50 years. TOS did not have enough episodes to go into repeat / residuals... but they did anyway!
The upcoming ST movie will be contracted final installment: the lid on the coffin of ST being slammed.... Or... it can be the seedbed for new ST television shows and movies. Hollywood runs quite simply on making money (lots and lots of money). There are lots and lots of Trekke's still hopeful for fresh ST broadcasts. And our viewership will help Hollywood to sell "soap" via the commercials that pay for the expenses. Alert Hollywood about your faithful viewership in any means you can find to contact them (through studio websites, tweets, likes, etc.) get hold of the fansites for the actors and producers and directors...

Example of new ideas...
Spock Prime is rejected by his people who blame him for the destruction of Vulcan. Rival species repeatedly try to kidnap him for his knowledge of the future and future weapons and technologies. Starfleet Intelligence rescues him from just such an attempt, but he is put in a coma from the battle. The younger Spock is summoned to try to meld with Prime to regain consciousness. Unbeknownst to him, SFI intends to take them both to a super secret base (the new Area 51) where Scotty is already assigned to research recently discovered super secret alien technologies akin to the Iconian technology.
Kirk and crew are sent to the outer frontier to investigate the disappearance of the USS Goliad (a starship manned by androids). Upon arrival, Enterprise encounters the DOOMSDAY MACHINE. Like the android ship, the Enterprise is destroyed by the mammoth machine. Most of the later crew escape in life pods. USS Constellation (battleship) flagship of the celebrated Romulan war hero Commodore Decker rescues them after the DOOMSDAY MACHINE has gone to inner systems.
Romulans Intelligence discover Nero and Narada from the Klingon database. And they mount an all out assault on the Federation. It is also learned that in the former timeline Federation scientists perished near the Romulan neutral zone while conducting RED MATTER experiments... causing the black hole that did (in the former timeline) would (in the later timeline) destroy Romulus.
Spock, from the mind meld and a flashback to the pep talk Prime gave him about the Kirk-Spock adventures that ordinarily lied ahead of them... realized this timeline was going nothing like the other timeline. Disaster after disaster replaced success upon success.
Spock contacts Kirk on Constellation and Kirk compels Starfleet Command to assign both he and crew another ship to combat the DOOMSDAY MACHINE and to try to set the timeline to right. The entire fleet is battling either the Romulans or the DOOMSDAY MACHINE. All that remains is an experimental starship the (as yet unnamed) Gabe Koerner class ship which Starfleet hastily christened USS ENTERPRISE NCC 1701A.
Along with the battleship Constellation, Kirk and Enterprise defeat the Doomsday Machine. Rather than joining the battle lines against the Romulans Kirk goes against orders to try to solve the timeline dilemma. He not only risks his career but his very life by dissertation in time of war.
