Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

Nemesis is a movie that barely anyone has even seen, let alone liked. Theater chains were literally passing on it, IIRC.

Whoa. I didn't know that. Harsh.

I didn't see it when it premiered because I was a 14-year-old street urchin at the time (no, seriously) but I very much wanted to. Was a Trek fan from childhood, but I just had no way of catching this "live." I had no idea I might not have even been able to find the damn movie even if I had the cash, though...

As for TFA, I was also a Wars fan practically from birth, so this movie is just as big a deal for me as anyone else here. I hope Abrams and Kasdan give all the old stars just desserts, but I'll take a lean helping for each of them over the new generation of characters feeling underdeveloped. It's a tall order, getting this blend just right, and as much as the names Luke, Han, and Leia mean to me, I think it's twice as imperative Rey, Finn, and Poe win our hearts.

ment to post this earlier

The first crawl since the summer of 1983 that won't mention trade disputes, blockades, Separatists or Clones. Whatever the final text of the crawl it's going to feel pretty special.

"Trade disputes with the SEPARATIST CLONES has resulted in a blockade by the NEW REPUBLIC of several outer star systems under the orders of CHANCELLOR LEIA ORGANA SOLO."

"Without the guidance of the Force, the Republic is blind to traitors hiding within."

Yeah, like the guidance of the Force helped so much with that in the PT...

Nemesis had a pretty strong opening weekend twelve years ago (though it didn't win the weekend box office - I think a Jennifer Lopez romantic comedy beat the film for the #1 spot) but it faded fast. Real fast. By he time its theatrical run ended it had the lowest box office tally of any Trek film in the franchise's history, considerably lower than even the widely-panned Star Trek V.

I went and saw Nemesis at the matinee first showing on Saturday morning of its opening weekend, I was literally the only person in the theater.

Nemesis is one of only two ST films I got to see in the theater (the other was ST09). It was definitely the best of the two, but I like it even when not comparing it to my least favorite ST movie. It has a lot of problems, but I thought it was decent. I definitely find it to be better than Insurrection, TFF, TMP or ST09.

 You can't be wrong with an opinion. I mean, its not like its my favorite. TWoK, TSfS, TVH, TUC, Generations, FC, and STID are all much better (well, Generations is only a little better). I just don't think Nemesis is terrible, and its not the worst ST film out there in my opinion.

full crawl perhaps

Naturally, I could easily be wrong, but I really doubt that it's legit.

It's a pretty good pastiche of the crawls we've seen, but here are some problems:

- First, it's a pastiche of what we've seen already. Being so derivative is a clue that it might be phony.

- Second, "Decades of unending war" is a contradiction. This was written by someone with less mastery of the English language than he/those who wrote the previous crawls. What they mean of course is simply, "Decades of war".

- Third, which Republic? Not the Old Republic, right? Of course, they mean the New Republic, one we've never seen before, so why aren't they saying so?

- Fourth, which Skywalker are we talking about? Better pastiche would have left no doubt: "Jedi Master Luke Skywalker". You want the audience clapping and cheering, right?

- Fifth, Set Harth has dismantled the "blind to traitors" bit adequately.

- Sixth, multiple Inquisitors? Okie-dokie.

- Seventh, "might change everything"?!? If it hadn't jumped the shark already, it just did. It really lost its voice, there.

Yes, I remember that humiliation well. The movie was Maid In Manhattan.
