Season SEVEN OFFICIAL TNG Blu-Ray Discussion Thread

Gambit really is a great episode, especially after watching the first three. It's just so fun, even though I've seen it recently being compared to The Chase. There are some similarities, but it seemed like this one told a much larger story than what The Chase could.

Weren't Data's blue eyes in that episode Brent's real ones? Looks like Brent found an excuse not to wear contacts that day!

makes sense.

I thought it was a continuity error on first viewing, then figured Spiner might have suggested it to make things more different for that particular episode.

I think Data looks great in RED.

In "Interface," only the interior of the USS Raman was seen (apparently there was no budget to build a new starship model for it). Was wondering if they made a CGI design for it for TNG-R?

Probably not, because that would mean creating and inserting an entirely new cut-away shot that didn't exist before and that's not wha they're doing with the show. They stick with the original broadcast edits of each episode so if there was never an exterior shot of that planned and edited in the original episode then you're not going to see in this Blu-Ray edition.

Finally started with the episodes and yeah Season 7 didn't get off the to best start. Of the first three episodes, I thought Descent II was the best one, but I know Gambit is coming up and I really like that two parter, one of the more underrated episodes of the series. Liasons is just as annoying as I remembered it (Honestly, I think that episode might be worse than some of the bad episodes from earlier, like Man of the People) and Interface felt just really boring. Still, I know there is a lot to like about Season 7 so I'm looking forward to getting deeper into it. When I get to Masks, I may even have a Masks appreciation thread, since I think that is one of the better episodes of the series (Not the best, just better) and I know that is a minority opinion. :p

I agree with you in that yes the 7th season gets off to a rocky and underwhelming start. The first two discs are full of clunkers (Liaisons, Interface, Phantasms, Force of Nature). Watching it again I have to say I do like Gambit it's more of a fun romp than I remember. I also really liked Dark Page which I remember not liking but I think it's the best showcase of Majel Barett's acting abilities. I like Attached even though it is a bit of a clunker but I've always liked the Picard/Crusher element but the episode is sort of worthless because there's not real movement in their relationship.

The good news is that the season picks up around the halfway mark around Parallels.

I like Phantasms. It was a strange, but interesting episode and we got the whole Cellular Peptide Cake.

I just saw Dark Page last night and it probably is my favorite Lwaxana episode of either TNG or DS9. Barett was in top form here, but what I really liked is we finally got to see the love between Lwaxana and Deanna. It seemed like every Mrs. Troi episode Deanna just tolorated her mother on the ship. Here, she finally became Lwaxana's Daughter, and the stuff at the end (including the deleted scene) was some great payoff. I've heard that this is a type of episode that should have been done early in the show, but I thought it worked really well here. It's done early in the show, so ok Deanna finds out she has a daughter. Next episode and Kestra isn't even brought up, mainly because TNG wasn't that kind of show. Having it at the end of the series added that impact I thought.

I struggled with Sub Rosa. Dear lord, was it always that bad? Thankfully the B plot gave us something. The fog rolling onto the bridge was pretty cool.

In The Pegasus, there's a shot of the viewscreen where a Romulan Warbird goes scooting off the left of frame...only now it pauses suddenly just before the shot cuts away. (I think it actually cuts to the next shot a split second later than the SD edit.) It's only for a moment, but it did draw my eye. :(

Cue people telling me off for whining about one second of footage. ;)

Oh Sub Rosa. I feel like someone in the writers' room must've been reading an Anne Rice novel when they came up with this. The sad thing is this is the only episode in seven seasons that Gates McFadden really got to shine and it was such a stinker.

 Just saw what you're talking about. It's around 18:45 in the episode in case anyone's looking. It's minor, but I also think it's kind of silly it was missed. Your attention is definitely drawn to it because it's the only thing moving rapidly in the shot and it comes to a sudden and abrupt halt.

It stays frozen on screen for three frames. It could be, like you suggest, that the shot is too long in the edit... or it could also be due to converting the miniature footage to 24fps. If you look at the original episode on DVD you'll notice that there are no repeated frames on the warbird's movement, so it was definitely originally shot at 30fps.

Since amazon.com has stopped selling season 7 on BD due to customer complaints: Has anyone spotted major technical errors on this release yet?

Yes, I understand that; however there is a scene where the Raman is shown on a computer graphic (only as a circular symbol and an NCC number), so I was wondering if that graphic was recreated for TNG-R as most computer graphics have been, to show an actual ship design instead of the symbol.

It's worth pointing out that Amazon will pull a product after complaints from only two customers.

Also, it appears to be back up.

I'd like to know too. If it's just an audio sync issue, that can be the issue of the player.

I have to set my BD player to +200ms.

Sister. But, yes, I agree, wonderful episode for both Majel and Marina.

I thought she shone in Remember Me and Cause & Effect.
