What is it like getting older?

What is your age range?

Ah HA! I have you there. I live in the burbs, where it doesn't flood! However, if you want to go downtown, then, well, yeah.

Eeeeeyeah, I thought I was mature enough to let this go, but I can't.

The. Last. Word.

Man, that felt good. :lol::techman:

You even managed to drag me into this thread.

I'll let you win that race. It would be miracle for me to run a mile these days. Probably the last time I ran a mile would have been over 15 years ago.

Age is just a number to me, as I also turned 40 this year. I still listen to the same radio station and same music. Age hasn't changed me.

Good to know. I'm the same way and I'm almost 45. I still like all the same TV, movies, and music that I did when I was 17. In fact, I like all the popular entertainment from 1987 much more than the "popular entertainment" of today.

Hot is a state of mind. Also cash. Take our friend Jabba the Hutt...Han never got her in that slave outfit.

A true role model for the children.

I'm 46 and I feel pretty good all things considered. My only complaint is that my facial hair comes in with an awful lot of white, I've found a few gray chest hairs, which are kind of creepy.

Holy cow, I'm 45 and I've started noticing the gray facial hair as well. Gives me more incentive to shave regularly I suppose! I'm just wondering when the gray might migrate north!

Otherwise feeling great, no major medical issues so can't complain.

Mr Awe

Well, for all the health issues I've had in the last 5-6 years, like being told by my cardiologist for 3 years that, basically, I was a heart attack waiting to happen and would likely die, I am remarkably healthy!

Got my thyroid issue (and law school and the Bar) sorted out, and I'm good to go. I hit 50 last year, got baselines from a couple of doctors.

Cardiologist? Uh...angiogram shows cardio arteries are minimally blocked or hardened or whatever. And with the third version of statin, my cholesterol was last at 144 total.

Dermatologist? Skin of a 6 year old. So being super white and staying the heck out of the sun was good.

Endocrinologist? Thyroid is stable. HA1C is 5.3--no diabetes on the horizon.

GP? Blood pressure under control. Bone density test shows me "way better than average" where "average" evidently is a healthy 30 year old woman. But I'm old--no way will I ever get pregnant--that's over. And I lost 20 pounds over the past year. Trying to lose more.

I went from taking 6 meds to taking 4, and will likely get off one of those next year. That'll be three left: thyroid (MUST take), statin (might as well, it's a very low dose), and blood pressure (which is low, but the med helps others things too).

Thing about health is that it's the weakest link that will get you. You might have young skin, but that won't help with heart issues. Just saying you shouldn't blow off your cardiologist! :)

That's where baldness comes in handy. :techman:

My beard hasn't gone gray yet, although since its color seems to have no relation to any other hair color I've ever had, it could be years, or even never.

Look at that optimism, that determination. Two years since that post, and nothing has changed in my life, save for the erosion of my optimism. Two more years of slogging through another day, compounded by all of the years before that. We're getting ready to enter 2015 in a few months. I will be 35 years old in that year, and I already feel like I'm 70.

J, I think you're a great guy so take all of this as friendly advice!

Sometimes people just need to shake up their life. That's not an easy thing to do, so I'm not trying to minimize the effort that it will take. What it sounds like you need is a personal trainer, but for your life. Someone that will kick your ass to make you make the changes that you need to make.

I'm not familiar with your exact circumstances but it's clear you're in a huge whonking deep rut. And, it'll take monumental effort to get out of that rut. But, once you're out, it's easier to change directions and not as hard to maintain.

Sometimes you just need to make a change so that everything is different. You may need, probably will need to, to move elsewhere. Even if it's for a similiar type job, but hopefully different, you never know what the never enviroment will surprise you with.

Maybe you need a positive new relationship with someone?

I don't know, but make a change.

Mr Awe

J if you can't change your whole life (which no one can) you need to get yourself a day off a week, or an evening off a week. A book club or anything that is free and gets you out of the house and into a different environment. It is incredible how recharging that can be. The thing is I know you've said you cannot do this but if you drop dead from stress that's even worse for your situation than forcing other people to take up the slack while you have a regular, scheduled time out.

I've posted this site before:

http://www.meetup.com/

And I know a few people here have used it. It's great for finding groups of people with similar interests or just groups of people doing something free! I know if I moved to a strange city I would use it, no investment in signing up for things you might not like.

When you are hugely stressed and depressed this sort of thing can sound stupid, like a timewaster compared to careers and relationships and education and all the big things that plague us when we don't think we're doing anything with our life. But it's precisely the small steps that nourish our ability to cope with what we can't change.

So, because this thread is two years old, I will bluntly say: find some small thing to do even if it's only once a week. Announce you are doing it and do it.

I am extremely worried about you when I read this stuff but I also feel like kicking your ass.

I hope there is some miracle when I am 40! :sigh:

You and me both, sweetie.

Hey, J. Allen

Hope you had a chance to read my post to you a couple of pages back. I think you will laugh!

I hope there is some miracle when I am 40! :sigh:

You and me both, sweetie.
The miracle is you (both of you). :)

My hope is to still be hot at 40. :p
My hope is to be someday hot at all. :rommie:

I hope there is some miracle when I am 40! :sigh:

You and me both, sweetie.

When you get there I'll tell you both the secret. Until then, keep guessing.:bolian:

^ I also think he needs an ass kicker, and I mean that in the nicest way possible! :)

I think an ass massager would be even better. More.. motivational. But at any rate, movement on da ass.

Thanks guys, I appreciate that. Also, just as a word of advice, while it is a truly magnificent film, almost magical in its way, 5 Centimeters Per Second is not something one should watch, for the first time, when depressed.
