Star Trek IV question:

I was looking at the transcript for The Voyage Home and noticed that it has flashback scenes at the beginning listed similar to The Search for Spock, with a new captain's log narrating the events.

Is this just something someone made up, is there another version of the film that I haven't seen or were these scenes always there and I'm just crazy?

Captain's log, stardate 8031 in the twenty-third century. As commanding officer of the U.S.S. Enterprise, I look back on our most recent adventure and realise I could not have asked for a more dependable ship or dedicated crew. Chekov, Doctor McCoy, Uhura, Scotty, Sulu, and our late comrade, Spock, whose heroic sacrifice in our last mission is now deeply felt. Our ship and our lives have been endangered by an experimental project called Genesis designed to bring new life to barren moons. We sent Spock's body there to rest in peace.

(scenes from "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.")

[Kirk's apartment]

SAREK: Why did you leave him on Genesis! Spock trusted you. You denied him his future!
KIRK: I saw no future.

[Electronic center]

SAREK: Only his body was in death, Kirk. ...bring him to us ...and bring that which he gave you ...his living spirit.

[Starfleet officer's lounge]

KIRK: ...if there's a chance that Spock has an eternal soul ...then it's my responsibility. ...Give me back the Enterprise!
MORROW: Out of the question, my friend!
SULU: The word, sir?
KIRK: The word ...is no I am therefore going anyway.

[Spacedock cafeteria]

FIRST OFFICER (on intercom): Sir, someone is stealing the Enterprise!
STARFLEET VOICE: All stations, Yellow Alert!

[Enterprise bridge]

CHEKOV: Sir. Commander, Starfleet on emergency channel. He orders you to surrender this vessel.
KIRK: No reply, Chekov.
SULU: One minute to space doors.

[Excelsior bridge]

STYLES: Kirk! If you do this, you'll never sit in the Captain's chair again.

[Enterprise bridge]

KIRK: Warp speed.
SULU: ...Warp speed.
KIRK: Best speed to Genesis.

Captain's log. (continued) Unfortunately we were not the first to arrive.

[Enterprise bridge]

SULU: Klingon Bird of Prey, sir! She's arming torpedoes!

[Bird-of-Prey bridge]

KIRK (on viewscreen): ...your presence here is an act of war.
KRUGE: Fire!

Captain's log. (continued) Quickly overpowered, we had no choice but to allow the Klingons aboard, which meant the only way to defeat them was to destroy the Enterprise.

[Enterprise bridge]

TORG: ...The ship appears to be deserted.

[Bird-of-Prey bridge]

KRUGE: ...They're hiding!

Captain's log. (continued) Leaving our ship for the last time we fled to Genesis.

[Bird-of-Prey bridge]

COMPUTER VOICE: ...five,...
KRUGE: Get out! Get out...

[Genesis planet - Kirk's landing]

KIRK: ...What have I done?
McCOY: What you had to do...

Captain's log. (continued) Just as the planet began to self-destruct we found Spock, and he was alive. His body had been regenerated but his mind was blank. Escaping Genesis we used the captured Klingon vessel to transport us to Vulcan where a mysterious ceremony was performed by Spock's people in an attempt to restore his memory.

[Vulcan temple area - sunrise]

SPOCK: ...You came back for me.
KIRK: You would have done the same for me.
SPOCK: Why would you do this?
KIRK: Because the needs of the one ...outweigh the needs of the many.

Captain's log. (continued) Meanwhile, back on Earth, the punishment for our disobedience awaited us.

Things like this are why I don't generally trust these kinds of fan-generated transcripts. Unless its a PDF of an original document, more often than not it's just as likely to be fanwank, especially if there's no notability included.

I'm not necessarily discounting that this is legit; just saying that it's awfully hard to make an educated guess based on its presentation.

I had a vhs video years ago that had this kind of introduction.

I remember that very well because the voices were different and they created a new Star Trek IV title that was simply just terrible.

... Or was only the title terrible? Can't remember any more.

I tend to generally trust this particular site because the transcripts usually seem accurate. But I have no recollection of the scenes they list.

Apparently either real or fan created:

Same title sequence from the theatrical release.

Perhaps that was done for foreign distribution, where filmgoers might not have been familiar with the preceding films?

I don't remember it from the original theatrical release. Something for TV, maybe?

That's the prologue for the foreign release version. How would a fan get Shatner to record that voiceover? :)

It's real. It also uses alternate music unreleased until the expanded Intrada album. I watched an alternate video numerous times to ID precisely what cues are what. I remember chatting with Jeff Bond online as I told him which cues are in this opening and that conversation pretty much made it into the liner notes.

Here's the video I watched: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmT913G2z7M It also matches the transcript in the first post.

I didn't know if someone had/could cut something together on their own. I'm always skeptical of material I didn't know existed for near thirty years. :techman:

I confirm that that prologue was in the Italian edtion of the movie. I've seen it in theater the first time and countless of other times in the VHS.

Yes, it was on the german version of VHS Star Trek too.

But it was very poorly done in the german version. It had different speakers than the rest of the movie and the text was newly translated. They didn't even check the translation for Star Trek III. I found that very lame.

Well, I'm originally from the UK and growing up watching this movie, that intro was the one the film always began with. There's a lovely bit where Kirk lists through the names, the screen pauses on shots of each character. Jimmy Doohan as Scotty gave a lovely little kind of chuckle that I always felt heartwarming... but you're not crazy at all. This is how the film always started.

Here in the States, we never had the prologue on any release that I'm aware of.

Seemingly, this recap didn't help much, as sales overseas, particularly in Europe weren't very different from how they'd been in the past. How ironic is that? Europeans didn't care for STAR TREK back then and now they're the market being catered to with new product coming out!

Ok well, here's what you missed out on. Just to put this to rest once and for that this did actually exist...

Thanks. But I already embedded the video earlier in the thread. :techman:
