Star Trek IV question:

Perhaps that was done for foreign distribution, where filmgoers might not have been familiar with the preceding films?

I was going to say maybe it was the airplane version, but then I thought, would they show the destruction of the Enterprise on an airplane?

The recap of the characters is nice, but giving the whole plot of TSFS seems unnecessary, when they could just say "They are on a spaceship in the future (and Spock has some memory issues)."

I really don't understand why they did it? The first few minutes of the actual film pretty well explains what happened.
