Hobbit: Battle Of the Five Armies anticipation thread

I think the second movie ends at a good enough spot - you might believe drenching Smaug in the molten gold was going to kill him. Then he heads out to destroy Laketown and Bilbo pretty much goes 'oh shit' and it ends on that sort of cliffhanger. It's not too bad.

A lot of things have to happen in the third film - isn't there a Dwarven army that at this point has to come out of nowhere since they weren't seen (or I think mentioned) in the first 2 films?

Dain from the Iron Hills is another army that comes. I believe they were featured in the first trailer, riding the rams. Dain was mentioned in the first film

I am looking forward to this film, a lot more than I was Desolation. I have a feeling that Tauriel is either dead, or goes in to isolation of Kili's death.

Personally, I'm looking forward to Dol Guldur.

I think killing off Smaug at the end of film two would have worked fine. I don't recall how the battle was set up in the book, but they could have ended the film on a shot of legions of either orcs, or elves marching toward the mountain.

It certainly would have felt like more of an ending, rather than the film just stopping where it did.

I'm looking forward to every second of it :drools:

They have flaws but I absolutely loved the first two Hobbit movies.

Same here. I wish they'd done a couple of things differently in the second one, but overall I've enjoyed them.

And hey you guys are lucky. I have to wait an entire year to see it when the Extended Edition comes out.

Honestly, as much as people don't like lack of faithfulness to the book, I thought the additions to the second movie were much better than to the first. The fight with Smaug would probably be pointed to as symbolic of the problem, but I liked it.

They mentioned that the Arkenstone would prove Thorin's right to rule, which would draw the dwarves to support him.

"I urged him to march upon Erebor... to rally the seven armies of the dwarves." - Gandalf

I just worry that saving Smaug's death for the beginning of the third movie will just make it all feel perfunctory, kind of like how Saruman's end felt tacked on to the beginning of the RotK Extended Edition. I feel like it's going to unnecessarily take up time in what's already looking to be a very stuffed third movie.

On another note, has anyone checked out the Extended Edition of The Desolation of Smaug yet? As a whole I thought they added some good and important stuff, particularly the extra footage with Beorn, who was barely there in the original cut. The opening scene set in Bree was also extended a bit, as was Gandalf's exploration of Dul Guldur, and some stuff in Lake-town. Overall I prefer the EE over the theatrical version (as usual), though like with all the other EEs they added a scene that I really think should have remained on the cutting room floor.

Given the way Peter Jackson has handled this trilogy, I'm extremely skeptical that it'll appear perfunctory. My guess is it'll be at least a 20 minute action sequence, possibly a 30 minute one.

OMG! How did I not know the Smaug EE came out on Tuesday?! Argh!!! I must get out there and buy it!!!!

Yeah, but that's 20-30 minutes out of what's looking to be about 150-160 minutes, which still needs to deal with the aftermath of Smaug's attack, the Dwarves in Lake-town reuniting with the rest of the Company in Erebor, everything leading up to the Battle of Five Armies, the battle itself, the aftermath of the battle, the fight at Dol Guldur, Bilbo returning home, and whatever else they might have planned.

Which one?
The Master's breakfast of bollocks. Just gross and totally unnecessary.

<<$20 at Walmart. Have fun! :D>>

Thanks muchly for the heads up! I made a special trip there and saved ten bucks; it was $30 at Target and Best Buy! I just finished watching the first half for tonight; as always the extended edition is vastly superior and much closer to the book.

I agree that the EE is overall better. But the special features (or "appendices") are spectacular, as expected. It's always fun watching how these huge movies come together, particularly after the decision was made to move to three films and the production had to scratch together a new climax, the completion of which literally took them up to the last minute (and beyond).

Finished the Smaug EE.

Gandalf finding Thrain at Dol Guldor was a huge and pleasant surprise for me. I loved the sequence and that totally should have been in the movie! I particularly liked the fact they showed Sauron collecting the Dwarven Rings and that Sauron himself kills Thrain.

That being said, there was some extremely clumsy editing in that sequence. Thrain disappears in many shots. It's like they filmed the theatrical version, then tried to film Thrain inserts to play the same scene a second way for the EE, but it didn't come off very well.

I also loved the extended Beorn sequence. They made him a lot more scary and badass, and of course the bit about slowly introducing the dwarves is a great scene from the book.

Man, I forgot how Gandalf basically disappears for this entire movie. I still love the barrel sequence and the Dwarves vs. Smaug sequence though! Cinematic gold!

Can't wait to watch the Appendices tomorrow!

yeah, the EE introduces some continuity errors at times. When Aragorn kills the Mouth of Sauron in the RotK EE they then cut back to the theatrical footage and his body isn't there anymore.
