Are they calling Carol Danvers Captain Marvel now? Or is this Monica Rambeau? If it's Carol Danvers, I'd suggest Sarah Carter. If it's Monica Rambeau, I'd suggest Nicole Beharie.

Monica is currently running with the name "Spectrum" while leading the segregated Avengers team (7 African Americans and She-Hulk. Although she is handing over command to Sam Wilson the new Captain America. It's Amazing how much gravitas came with the shield when Steve retired. Captain America & the Avengers #1 comes out soon. Can you believe that while this is going on, when Havok's Avengers squad has the gall to call itself the Unity Team?)

Carol has been Captain Marvel for quite some time. :)

This is funny from Monica's Wiki.

When Gennis-Vell transformed wants to establish a new identity for himself, he begins calling himself Photon. Rambeau confronts him, but she decides to let Gennis keep the Photon alias after she came up with a name she liked better: Pulsar.[49]
It's funny because Gennis Vell, son of the original Captain Marvel, eventually goes on to take the name Captain Marvel (As does his sister Phalla Vell simultaneously.) for himself too.

It's almost like he was thoroughly invested in Monica's sloppy seconds.

Warner Bros. is making a Shazam movie, which is what they now call their version of Captain Marvel to avoid confusion with the Marvel character(s) of that name. This article explains why DC and Marvel both have characters named Captain Marvel, as well as covering the history of the various Marvel characters of that name:

And this article covers the reasons for the Captain Marvel/Shazam name change over on the DC side:

Marvel Studios' Captain Marvel film will be out in July 2018, while Warner Bros.' Shazam movie is slated for April 2019.

Oh, Billy Batson Capt. Marvel is a DC Character, and the female Captain Marvels are Marvel? :alienblush: Never was a big comic reader, so, I never knew that :alienblush:

Thanks guys

It's better to call the DC character "Shazam" (though he can never call himself that or it depowers him when powered up) than "Captain Marvel."

That's DC's current thinking, and apparently it's what most people in the general public think the character is called, but to me he'll always be Captain Marvel. After all, one of the defining aspects of the original Fawcett series was the extended Marvel Family -- there was Captain Marvel, Mary Marvel, Captain Marvel Junior, and even Uncle Marvel (who didn't have any powers but was sort of the comic relief character). So are the others now Mary Shazam and Shazam Junior, or what?

What DC probably should've done decades ago was revert the character to what his creators in the '40s were originally going to call him: Captain Thunder. If they'd just gone that route, they could've avoided the trademark issues with Marvel, as well as the awkwardness of calling him Shazam when that's actually the name of the wizard who empowered him.

(As for the "How can he say his name" thing, I read somewhere that he has to say "Shazam" with conviction in order to transform. If he says it casually, nothing will happen.)

Conviction? That's an apologist inventing fantasy because they don't want to admit that what they have put their faith in childish tosh with rickity canon.

The "new" Shazam character was a continuing 3 or 4 page backstory in the pages of Justice League by Geoff Johns & Gary Frank that was eventually bound and released in it's own right.

Beautiful to look at, but Geoff decided that Billy should be a shifty jerk grifter, so I bailed quickly. After he was picked up for vagrancy, Billy was lumped into a group home where I think he might have met Freddie and Mary but he didn't gave away timeshares of his super powers so it barely matters.

Recently Luthor pulled a Maxwell Lord. He built them a space station as a club house and signed up "Shazam" to the League without their permission. Maybe he's untainted, or maybe Billy's first loyalty is to Luthor and not the League? But even if Luthor deep down is an asshole unwittingly trying to do rotten, this attempt at being a goodygoddnik seems sincere no matter how much Batman and Superman are scheming trying to ensure the man's failure and ruin.

The Mighty Self-Segregated Avengers. There's a sign of the times. :rommie:

I had no idea.

I was kind of aware of the son, but I never heard of the daughter. Where did he come up with all these kids, being dead and all?

The original Marvel Marvel was male, too, and so was one of the later ones. Hard to keep track of the players without a scorecard. :D

Another sign of the times....

I'd like to see Saoirse Ronan or Natalie Dormer play Captain Marvel. Natalie has already been in the MCU, but I don't think a half-minute minor role should rule out a starring role as a different character.

Disclaimer: I wouldn't have thought of either of them without seeing the list on Slashfilm.

RJ, Mar-Vell's wife, well after her husband bought the farm, had a couple testtube babies.

If you like Peter David, their stories are well worth looking into.

If you dislike Peter David, never mind.

Oh.

I already mentioned Hulkling earlier in the thread, but Mar-Vell boffed a Skrull Princess, and that kid is totally gay for one of the Scarlet Witches kids, who are both now teenage Super heroes in the Young Avengers.

Last I checked there was a manchurian candidated Skrull posing as Mar-Vell since the Civil War, who when he found out that he was a Skrull, wasn't impressed at all and decided to keep being Mar-Vell despite his true origins.

Below was quite weird...

During the 2012 "Avengers vs. X-Men" storyline, Kree mystics appear to have resurrected Mar-Vell, using a piece of the M'Kraan Crystal in conjunction with the Phoenix Force. The resurrected Captain Marvel is deployed to act as a pawn against the Avengers and in defense of the Phoenix Force.
OH!

Kicking this nogoodnick's ass was the inspiration for Carol taking the name the Captain Marvel.

2012?

My bad, 2012 is not that long ago.

I think Saoirse was in contention for Scarlet Witch at one time but isn't she still a bit too young to play a colonel?

To me, Billy Batson's Cap is my favorite superhero, and Carol Danversis always going to be Ms. Marvel to me, so I personally stick with Billy being the real Cap, regardless of the fact that Marvel decided to screw around with the Captain Marvel name. Plus, Shazam is the name of the wizard, not the hero anyway. I get why they did it, but he'll never be "Shazam" to me.

I know it would never happen but would anyone be interested in a movie version of the Death of Captain Marvel, wherein Mar-Vell died of cancer? It's a fairly seminal story, which retains its power because Marvel have never cheapened it by reviving him - he remains dead.

Probably, but we're just throwing names of people we'd like for it. Chances are the actress finally chosen will have appeared on very few wishlists, if any at all. :)

The brought back Bucky.

This death is on borrowed time.
