X-Men Spinoff Featuring Gambit Gets Greenlight

Link

Fan favorite X-Men Gambit will be played by Channing Tatum. I mostly know him from the character's appearances on The Animated Series and relationship with Rogue in that. The character had a forgettable moment in Origins: Wolverine, but I'm excited to see where this is going. No idea what era the film is going to placed in yet.

I've never really been in to Gambit, but Chris Claremont's participation is definitely a plus for me.

^I can agree with that.

Though I read about him in the X-Men comics, reading only a few of his solo comics, I mostly know him from the animated series. He's a great +1 Character, but a solo film doesn't sound like a great idea to me.

Ugh, Channing Tatum? I want Taylor Kitsch back!

I know. He did such an unquestionably terrible job, it would be hard to argue against him coming back. Even a half-assed attempt at a Cajun accent would have been a vast improvement. But, aside from that, his role was small and unremarkable in an otherwise forgettable movie.

I have no idea if Channing Tatum can pull it off better. In fact, I'm hesitant to support seeing this character at all unless they can do the accent and a solo movie seems extreme just now. But it's also hard to believe he'd do worse.

There's no question that most people think Deadpool was the most disappointing aspect of that movie. I always thought Gambit was worse. Ryan Reynolds at least was fun and in-character at first (before he got the costume). It was only at the end of the movie where he was terrible and nothing like Deadpool. Gambit just felt shoe-horned in without actually being Gambit.

Claremont and Gambit? Count me out. While there may be worse X-Men, none come to mind right now.

Tatum's from the deep south (Mississippi and Alabama) so he might pull off the accent. Though the accent, as rendered in the comics, is one of the worst things about the character.

What's wrong with Chris Claremont? While I like Gambit, I can understand the criticism. I can't understand the criticism of Chris Claremont.

Loved his work back in the day, but his writer quirks, have worn thin. The overuse of "catch phrases" is one of them. Feel the same about Peter David.

I tend to think his dialogue is not his strong suit. On the other hand, he more or less singlehandedly created the X-Men we care about. That's hard to ignore.

I have absolutely no interest in a Gambit movie. There are so many other X-Men characters that I would have chosen first.

Perhaps this Gambit... won't pay off.

Less when it comes to the "All New All Different" team. ;) Cockrum and Byrne's contributions can't be underestimated. Rogue is the last new X-man I found interesting.

Well if this Gambit movie is going to be part of the X-Men continuity, there's going to have to be some connection to his appearance in XOW. Even the recent "Days Of Future Past" movie used parts of that movie for Wolverine's back story.

^ That was basically stock footage; I wouldn't read too much into it. It's not as though they flashed us Danny Huston's Stryker or anything...

Why would they do that after recasting the part? It's not like a picture of Katie Holmes turned up in The Dark Knight Rises.

Is the treatment by Claremont an original story meant for the movie, or do they mean they're going to use elements from his comics?

Because he really didn't do much besides introduce the character before he left. A training session with Wolverine, the Shiar then Muir island arcs, then a final confrontation with Magneto as Claremont left, which weren't Gambit centric at all, though he had strong showings in each.

I'm just curious how long it is before we find out that Hugh Jackman is going to be in it. Even if just a cameo.
