What grade would you give the Marvel Cinematic Universe? (Ever-Changing Question)

I wonder if Team Marvel intentionally waited until after DC announced their big slate, to pop their balloon. Who cares about Aquaman or Cyborg now? :rommie:
Me, I do. Aquaman is a top 10 character for me.
Cyborg I'm indifferent to, he's always been a support Titans member and he was used as a substitute Martian Manhunter in nu52...doesn't make him any more interesting so a solo Cyborg film(if it actually happens) is something they'll have to work at to make interesting for me.

I wonder how they'll handle Carol Danvers's backstory, since it's very closely tied to the 60s and 70's incarnation of Captain "Mar-Vell" except without stuff like the nega-bands. Then of course there was that long storyline with Rogue (Who Fox owns) and her alcoholism which will probably be ignored the same way Tony's has. Of course they'll probably ignore that Marcus stuff, I don't blame them.

She was also part of the Starjammers for a while, but I think Fox also owns them. Probably stick her with the Guardians instead if they do a similar storyline.

I was actually about to inquire about this since they technically can't mention mutants, Magneto, x-men, etc. How will they explain their powers other than some throwaway line such as: "we were just born this way."

Terrigen Mist, son.

Although they've been tied to Magneto and been mutants since the beginning in the comics, the origins of the two went I think through several retcons. Originally they were the offspring of 40's heroes The Whizzer and Miss America (Who have similar powers and even hairstyles) and were raised by a cow woman or something like that, then there was some kind of romanian guy, and then finally things kind of went full circle and they turned out to be Magneto's.

Polaris, Magneto's other daughter also went through retcon after retcon as well before officially becoming Magneto's daughter (although with a different mother).

I think comparing Marvel's output and WB is comparing apples to Oranges - WB is a film studio that makes some Superhero films, Marvel is a Superhero film studio - they start from different positions.

I just remembered that both Captain Marvel's (Mar-Vell and Carol) get their powers from Kree technology (nega bands) and or genetic enhancement. Since MCU is doing Inhumans, who were created by the Kree. It makes sense to have Carol also represent.

It's too bad. I want to see the Skrull and Kree go at it. Hopefully FF does the Skurll in their second reboot movie.

Although I am smh in disappointment with Marvel atm. Really guys?! November 8th for Black Panther? Knowing full well that Justice League 1 opens up a week later on November 17th. It's not a toss up who is going to win the Thanksgiving holiday but still. It's like Black Panther is being sacrificed.
Heh, I like it. BvS will use up pretty much all of Justice League's general audience novelty curiosity boost in terms of seeing Supes, Bats, and WW together, even if they're not all fighting side-by-side by the end... so it'd better be loved by general audiences to build up real goodwill for JL Pt.1. If it isn't, even if Black Panther doesn't end up making as much, strong BP box-office receipts could really give JL Pt.1 a broken leg, which could be very bad for DC.

I suppose you could say that Marvel is making a... catty move there.

I agree. The comparison should really be Disney and WB. Disney and WB are both film studios that make some Superhero films.

Im now regretting not reading as many comics when I was younger, and I could afford to read more now.

Im familiar with these characters but feel compelled to do more research with each announcement.

Why do you suppose they chose the Inhumans to lead into Avengers: Infinity War part 2? Not really familiar with them. Do they play a fairly pivotal role in the comics?

Traditionally Inhumans have had a closer relationship to the Fantastic Four. Inhumans are a race of humans who were genetically altered by the Kree. The Kree we briefly saw during GOTG. The villain Ronan was a Kree. Traditionally the Kree are in a prolonged conflict with the Skurll. However since Marvel does not own the rights to either the FF and their villains (Dr. Doom, Galactus, Silver Surfer and presumably the Skrull) we probably won't get a reference to the Skrull in the MCU. The Inhumans like mutants for the X-Men franchise all have special abilities that separate them from normal humans.

Notable ones would be
Kamala Kahn: Shapeshifting
Black Bolt: Super Strength and extremely powerful sonic voice
Medusa: long hair that is as tough as steel that she can control.
Lockjaw: Dog creature with teleportation powers.
Crystal: Element Manipulation.

I would think an Inhumans movie would have Karnak, Triton and Gorgon in it and Maximus as well.

They didn't totally ignore Tony's alcoholism. They may not have done it justice as in the comics but it factored into the films somewhat.

The difference is Disney owns and funds Marvel Studios, which is an actual film studio that makes only superhero films. Warner Bros. owns DC Comics in its entirety and hires people from outside to make movies based on their property, with a sort of nebulous attempt at oversight via DC Entertainment.

I do find it interesting that no confirmation of Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange was announced. This would have been a great time to do so. It looks like Deadline and everyone else severely jumped the gun the other day, and it makes me wonder how far into negotiations Cumberbatch really is.

As Kevin Feige put it, if a deal had been completed, it would have been announced.

So are mutants and Inhumans synonymous with each other if they're in the same universe? Comic-wise anyways.

No. Not at all. There's a Mutants vs. Inhumans comic storyline coming up which should make that crystal clear. They're an isolationist clan consisting of humans genetically engineered by the Kree. They have their social cast system/family dynamics that make them different. They also have their cosmic connections to the Kree. The fact that the two movies between Infinity War Pt. 1 and Pt. 2 were both affected by the Kree (Captain Marvel is a human but got powers from a Kree soldier, the Inhumans are the product of Kree genetic experiments) is certainly no coincidence. Basically a cosmic/earth connection.

If rumours are to be believed Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver will be Inhumans in the MCU.

I don't know why those rumors would be believed, since they've been explicitly denied on multiple occasions.

Who cares about Aquaman or Cyborg now?
I didn't care about them last week, so nothing's changed for me.

I have to wonder if the plan to do a Captain Marvel movie isn't partly motivated by DC/WB announcing a Shazam movie? I have no clue what the exact legal details would be, but maybe, as with Marvel's motivation for creating a character with that name in the comics, they feel the need to assert their copyright onscreen as well.

Would you guys say somebody like Charlize Theron would be too high of profile or possibly even too old to play Carol Danvers? Or just straight up wrong for the part? Hmm she's 39 now so probably too old.

Maybe somebody like Margo Robbie, if she doesn't do Suicide Squad
Or Emily Blunt. Or somebody like Yvonne Strahovsky

Robert Downey Jr. turns 50 next year.

Since Spider-Man won't be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is it safe to say that Black Panther will fill in for him for Civil War?

No. Like the Extremis-inspired IM3, it'll be an original story inspired by elements from the comics series, not a fit-peg-in-hole job.
