Star Wars Rebels Season One (spoilers)

I actually kinda liked the droid arc. Although it probably helps that I'm a huge R2 and astromech fan.

I kinda liked the droid arc, too, but I agree that it really didn't need to be four episodes.

As for "Fighter Flight," I actually liked it. Didn't think it was too bad at all. Maybe a little too soon for Zeb and Ezra to get over their differences and get all buddy-buddy, but otherwise I thought it was fine.

I liked the first episode of the droid arc where they were stealing something from Grevious, but after that it got horrifically tedious. It would have been a nice single episode.

The new episode Rise of the Old Master is on the XD app. It's the best episode so far, and touches on exactly that (Kanans ability as a teacher)

Is this the Luminara episode?

Yes.

Rise of the Old Master is also available On Demand from some cable providers now.

I agree: hands down, the best episode so far. Very cool stuff.

Also agree: that droid is a dick. No question.

It's not the arcs I mind... it's being stuck with the same 6 characters over and over again. I really liked that The Clone Wars had a very epic feel with the time to explore all corners of the galaxy and even follow villains around as heroes. Will Disney give us any Ezra-less episodes? So far Rebels has been incredibly character focused, it's difficult to tell what sets Lothal, Kessel, Garrel or Stygeon Prime apart from other planets or what makes them distinctive from what we've been exposed to previously.

Right on, Spiner! I knew I heard a familiar voice but I couldn't tell who...

PS. Chopper is a real bastard! I like him but... were he real I wouldn't turn my back on him.

Chopper is irritating. Whose idea was it to give him a "voice" that's just "Wa-wa-wa" over and over? That's not what astromechs sound like, and it's effectively useless as a form of communication. It sounds like a temp track that somebody forgot to replace with the real sound effects.

I bought the pilot episode on DVD, and it is ok so far.
I'll need to see more to make a better judgment call on the show, but I do know one thing that's got me mildly disheartened....

When I saw TV ads recently for the show, it has a rating of TV-Y7. The Clone Wars was Tv-PG....which meant that it was a lot edgier...definitely not just a "kids" animated show. Rebels (granted, it's on Disney XD) is going to be much more kiddified. I mean, we'll see the occasional stormtrooper/TIE pilot meet his fate, but that's seemingly about it....unless Rebels really sacks up in later seasons.

Like I said, the pilot wasn't bad...but it didn't enthrall me the way Clone Wars did. I had higher expectations, considering it is run by Dave Filoni, showrunner of Clone Wars.

Well apparently he's supposed to be an older model of astromech, which explains the very different design and voice. And those I don't really mind, but having him constantly playing a bunch of annoying, childish pranks on everyone is definitely a bit much I think.

First off, we've already seen a number of Stormtroopers killed on the show, so I don't think that's going to be an issue. Second, I don't see how a higher death toll makes a story better or edgier. Real "edge" and maturity comes from dealing with complex issues and emotions and challenging ethical questions. Killing off a bunch of faceless spear-carriers does nothing to make a story more powerful or sophisticated.

Well, lemme try this from another tack...

I for one, enjoyed the hell out of Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, and those were TV-Y7. I thought they had some really great stories, and tackled a lot of things that were pretty edgy, even for so rated a show. It has been a while since I've seen the shows, so kindly do not ask me for specifics. I'm not looking for debate. I simply contributed my two cents worth.

I did not say that I was put off by SWR. I simply said I wasn't enthralled by it.....yet. It may very well come into its own, and perhaps, in my mind, might even surpass Clone Wars. I do trust Dave Filoni will improve upon the show. :)

Sure it is, since Chopper's an astromech. It might not be what most of the ones we are familiar with sound like but that's immaterial since they were all very likey later models.

I'm all for stating it sounds annoying (I'd say it's purposefully distinct from Artoo, frankly) but "that's not what astromechs sound like" is something you usually go after people for saying.

My point is that it sounds like a person going "Wa-wa-wa" into a ring modulator, rather than like any kind of electronic language. It's contradictory to have it sound like a voice yet not convey any actual verbal content. It's just a terrible, lazy piece of sound design.

Devil's advocate: there is ample precedent in SW canon for droids that make voice-like noises without actually saying recognisable words. The "Gonk" power droid leaps to mind.

Also, R2's "voice" is so recognisable and iconic that it wouldn't feel right having Chopper sound anything like him.

Honestly I always thought it odd how only astromech droids use "droid speak" while just about every other droid type (that doesn't speak basic or Huttese) seems to have it's own unique language. You'd think the whole point of a machine language would be that it'd be a universal thing. The idea that a struggling moisture farmer could possibly have a any use for a dedicated translator droid speaks volumes as to how much variation there must be in his equipment.

yep.

yep. *that* would have been lazy sound design.

They could've given Chopper a variant that was lower-pitched and harsher than R2's while still sounding complex enough to be credible as some kind of machine language, and still sounding like it was at least in the astromech "language family." I mean, if they're both astromechs, if they were both built to perform similar functions, why would they have completely unrelated ways of communicating? Are there any other examples of astromechs that sound completely dissimilar to R2-D2? My recollection seems to be that they all sound pretty much the same.

And having nearly killed Ezra, at the beginning of this weeks episode. Maybe it's intentional and Chopper doesn't like him.
