Star Wars Rebels Season One (spoilers)

Yeah I really hope fans will give the show a chance. Looking at comments on FB and other places, I get the impression a lot of people have already dismissed the show as being too "childish" after only watching a few clips or previews. Or because it doesn't share the exact same style and tone as TCW.

Which is too bad, because I suspect this show is going to become much more interesting and complex the longer it goes on.

Funny, because I think it's the exact opposite. I always found TCW a little too kid friendly, which is why I could never get into it. But Rebels seems to throw in a lot of nods/Easter eggs for the older folk.

For a "kid friendly" show, TCW had a lot of decapitations and on-screen deaths in general. Some fairly brutal. Honestly I'm surprised they got away with so much.

Aside from that it tended to tackle some fairly complex and mature concepts with surprisingly little black and white moralising. I'd honestly put the show up there with the likes of 'Batman TAS', 'Gargoyles', 'Avatar TLA' & 'Korra'.

^Zeb is much better handled in episode 2.

Unfortunately the following episode seems to take a step backwards with Zeb's characterization.

Yeah I admit I'm not really looking forward to watching Zeb and Ezri go on a mission together and bicker the whole time. But from the sound of it, the following episode is the best one yet. And the titles for the remaining episodes sound pretty promising as well.

Clone Wars got progressively darker over the seasons, as the war progressed from Attack of the Clones to Revenge of the Sith. The "kid friendly" nature started to go away for the most part (there were still things here and there, but that is nature, not only because it is a cartoon, but because it is Star Wars...that film based on 1930s sci-fi serials)

It would be premature to write off a show after the pilot and the first 2-3 episodes but if the show didn't grab you by mid 1st season then it probably never will.

Writers need to know this and while they should not just write in shock value scenes or one action scene after the other they should know their target audience and write for them. You will never satisfy everybody and every show (with very few exceptions) loses viewers after an initial successful pilot so taking it slow may work but usually it just sheds viewers more than expected.

While the current episode was ok i still have not warmed up to it completely.. just too many errors and implausibilities for me to swallow (that Tie cockpit was friggin huge.. a teenager could stand in it with a huge other alien and not even bump head on the ceiling) and i just can't see it developing in interesting ways yet.

About the only really cool scene was in last episode when Kanan got out of cover and ignited his Lightsaber which made the Stormtroopers and their officer take a step back and pause.. that was a very cool and understated way of showing how dangerous a Jedi can really be and how much respect they still command when encountered on the battlefield.

I'll probably stick around to mid season before making a final decision.

Well it still IS a kids cartoon, so I think we have to give it a bit of allowance for that. And even then, we're not exactly talking the silliness of Lego Star Wars or the awful Detours show that we got a glimpse of earlier. This is a whole lot better and more adult than that, I think.

Even keeping constantly in mind that it is a kid's cartoon, Fighter Flight was a lot of silly and a little too soon in the series for my tastes. In fact, I found the whole sorry outing to be mostly a let down. With all the thrashing about off screen it was more like Goof Troop than Star Wars/Firefly at the beginning and the end. But I tried keeping in mind that The Clone Wars was set in a galaxy with a frantic pace, a war raging from one end to the other, so this era may take a less urgent tone by comparision.

Kanan and his apparent approach to slacking off completely as a Jedi master: the last episode had proven Ezra to be a powerful force wielder and the episode ends with Kanan saying, "your formal Jedi training starts tomorrow." Did we get to see any of that first Jedi training? Nope. Kanan would rather play chess with Chopper. And sit on his ass. Did he play hackey-sack with Hera and Sabine while the kids were off hunting fruit? When focused on fruit, the main storyline wasn't so bad. How often can you say that?

Spark of Rebellion flowed effortlessly into Droids in Distress but it does not continue into Fighter Flight. Unless - and maybe I'm all wrong here - this episode takes place directly after the events of Droids in Distress and next week's episode really is the next day? In which case, please disregard my rant entirely.

The Imperial stuff (attacking, capturing the farmers, etc) with the troop carriers was exciting. Points for Sabine: "I paint what I see." But the dynamic between Kanan and Ezra is off. I don't understand their non-relationship so far... almost as if they have no interest in each other.

Anyway, I'm sure it'll improve. The description for next week (Rise of the Old Masters) sounds really exciting and may even be the way that they start tying these stories together with The Clone Wars. And maybe even... you know, leave Lothal behind for that gigantic universe out there... really looking forward to our first look at The Spire on Stygeon Prime. Oh and it sounds like they are finally getting down to some Jedi training for the kid - an excellent idea.

Once there was a move to Disney I had speculated that it'd be harder to show 'hero' characters regularly blasting human(oid) stormtroopers dead. I figured the Clone Wars had a much easier time since the 'villains' were droids.

yeah, well, Rebels hasn't had any trouble at all showing stormtroopers getting blown away.

IIRC, the Clone Wars started out a little kiddie friendly then became darker at times (e.g. clone taken over by worms, clones being sacrificed in battle by a prejudiced jedi, and so on). I'm curious to see how the show handles the more 'adult' moments. (After all, not only kids are watching this show in anticipation of the new movie next December).

Well, "Fighter Flight" was not a bad episode, but it didn't leave me dying to watch it again the way the first three did. Hopefully as we look back on the show this will be the worst episode they ever did.

I'm disappointed that Sabine remains a cipher three episodes in. We just had a Zeb heavy episode last time. I feel like I have a firm picture on every character except Sabine at this point. I haven't seen what her motivation or backstory is yet.

Being that we're only two or three episodes into the series, we've yet to see the backgrounds of the Ghost's crew with the exception of Ezra.

But since we're in this new era of Star Wars in which books and comics are as canon as live-action fare, I think it's going to be established in the upcoming comic series based on Kanan that during the final days of the Clone Wars and the Old Republic that
he never was knighted as a Jedi and was still a young Padawan when Order 66 went down.
That would explain a lot why Kanan isn't really the ideal Jedi Master--or Jedi period, IMO.

The new episode Rise of the Old Master is on the XD app. It's the best episode so far, and touches on exactly that (Kanans ability as a teacher)

Episode three was kinda so-so. It had its moments, but the overall plot was really nothing memorable. I've always hated the old "Lets have two of our main characters squabble like bratty six year olds" trope. I really hope we never see it again on the show.

And really? The Imperials deploy a squad to shoot up the town over a kid trying to steal a piece of fruit? Is this really an efficient use of resources?

I really hope the show does well though. Yes its a bit kiddy at times, but its a strong premise with lots of room to grow and improve. And I love all the little references to McQuarrie's designs. Hell just those are enough to keep me coming back.

And yes, I squee'ed over the troop transports as well.
