"If I've told you once I've told you a thousand times DON'T PROVOKE

Re: "If I've told you once I've told you a thousand times DON'T PROVOK

^ There's no reason for that. The Q are incorporeal, so there's nothing for the Borg to assimilate. The Q should have nothing to fear from them.

Quinn is right - the Q are surely not omnipotent, but they can still beat the Borg with a thought.

Re: "If I've told you once I've told you a thousand times DON'T PROVOK

They can't beat the Borg if the Borg are needed in the future to do something that is relevant to their ongoing existence. They know when they are going to do something to the Borg and they know when they are going to do something final to the Borg. They have to go through the motions of being dicks and apologizing for being dicks een though they had no choice in he matter.

Predeterminism is a bitch.

It might not be a fear of assimilation, but rather the Borg figuring out a way of destroying the Q in some way.

The Q have imprisoned their own, and stripped them of all powers, even (apparently) killed each other in a civil war.

Perhaps others can do these things to the Q as well?

Re: "If I've told you once I've told you a thousand times DON'T PROVOK

They had to use supernovas as bullets.

Re: "If I've told you once I've told you a thousand times DON'T PROVOK

The Q think of the universe as a giant SimCity game. When you've spent eons developing the best self sustaining city possible, you don't want your little brother sending Godzilla through it before you can do a save.

Re: "If I've told you once I've told you a thousand times DON'T PROVOK

Ryan Reynolds starred in a movie about that.

A god like creature that got so involved in the game (our world) so perfectly that he forgot that he was immortal and otherworldy.

Melissa McCarthy played another god staging an intervention, who described the last time she tried to get him out as "And they you spent 40 years trying to redesign the perfect pine cone."

Re: "If I've told you once I've told you a thousand times DON'T PROVOK

I think it's more of a case of Q having PTSD style flashbacks to when he lost his powers after screwing with the Borg (Q Who/Deja Q) as opposed to any concern about the collective being a threat to the Q.

^ This. :techman:

I like that SG:A episode where Rodney and Shepherd thought they were playing with sims but it was a real world.

Ah, "The Game" and they get chewed out by Shepard... But carried on anyway. That was a great episode.

Yeah i know this is an old thread.....

The reason I thought Q said that was because one thing we've heard is that the Q have to keep order in the galaxy. "Messing" with the Borg could lead them to invading someplace they weren't going to and it would thrown off the "natural order" in the galaxy

Why do you think Q was so upset with his son for messing with the Borg, could the Borg possibly pose some sort of thread to the Q?

I don't think the Borg are any type of threat to th Q. Instead, I took this to just be an exasperated parent. Essentially saying ... "Don't do this, because I don't feel like cleaning up after you... AGAIN!"

Was he worried about Voyager since we know he's more then capable of growing attached to a group of mortals despite putting up pretenses to the contrary?

I doubt it. I think the Q see various races as like pets. He's fond of the "puppies" on Voyager, but for the Q, nothing can be done that can't be undone. If Junior kills them, he can just bring them back. In keeping with my first comment, he's just tired of doing it.

Do you think maybe the Continuum who fancy themselves the "Guardians of the Universe" find that interference with the Borg can have galactic repercussions, and so it's highly frowned upon? It was in fact after 'Q Who' that the Continuum made Q himself mortal, so maybe he was afraid messing with the Borg was a sure fire way for his son to get kicked out of the Continuum. What do you think?

I think the Q, as a species, long ago tinkered with every permutation of the universe they could imagine, just like Annorax in Year of Hell on a much grander scale. Killing species, watching the repercussions, bringing them back. That's essentially part of what they mean when they use the euphemism of traveling the road and being the scarecrow in "Death Wish."

The difference between Annorax and the Q really being that the Q could literally undo whatever they had done and start over, while Annorax could not - he could only take additional actions that might happen to undo some elements of changes he'd already made.

Eventually, the Q settled on the current timeline, for whatever reason, as their preferred one. They therefore become guardians of that timeline by default since they see any other outcome as sub-optimal. Tinkering by anyone with that timeline has potentially dangerous repercussions for them if left unchecked, so they police each other - making sure that changes by a Q to the timeline are small and cleaned up quickly. Random, unstable elements like a relatively immature child in the continuum can become a threat, and why Q Jr. needs Q to be his minder.

As far as the son getting kicked out of the continuum for what he's doing (or tried to do), I think you're essentially right, following that same logic.

I'm sure there are gaping holes in my logic, but that's what I've gone with. That's why truly omnipotent characters in a story are a really bad idea. It's almost impossible to write a story for them that doesn't fall apart on close (and sometimes even cursory) examination.

"If I've told you once, I've told you a thousand times: STOP TEASING THE DOG!"
That's all there is to it.

Of course, it took a few zillion years to learn the lesson himself, and now he's faced with every parent's worst nightmare: a son who's just like him.

Q's warning about the Borg might be along the same line as his obvious fear of Guinan.

Apparently there are non-Q who the Q are afraid of for some reason.

I think that ties back to the comment that the Q are not actually all powerful. Most likely they do have some kind of weakness that perhaps Guinan's species are aware of

Well, I don't think that it is necessary that Q is all-knowing or all-powerful to know that the Borgs are very dangerous. He just has to observe what's happened every time a vessel crossed the way of Borg Cubes, whatever quadrant concerned.
To sum up, when he says " If I've told you once I've told you a thousand times DON'T PROVOK!", it means: "do not tempt fate...because one day, the luck will leave you!" and he is right.

In the same time, I loved each time Janeway and Voyager met the Borgs, one of the most fascinating "species" we got in Star Trek universe! PLus, thsese meetings gave us Seven, Icheb and his friends and some terrific episodes! :techman:

YES! I love all the Borg episodes. I'm in the group that does not think they were overdone or weakened. And I also really enjoyed the Borg kids, especially Mezoti.
